       Ruger 10/22
       By: 22-250 Date: April 11, 2012, 12:29 pm

Are the Ruger 10/22's Carbine at wallyworld worth the $227.00
sticker price? I already own a Savage .17HMR and a Savage
.22-250. I guess what I really need to decide is if I really
       need one. Your thoughts appreciated.

       $227 for a 10/22!?! :o Wow, the prices have jumped! I think
they are a solid rimfire rifle, but I don't like how short and
carbine-like they feel. Mine was very accurate and the rotary
mag helped when I was burning powder after squirrels and running
rabbits. I would run through one mag and swap out the other
quickly. I prefer the Marlin model 60 for the price and longer
rifle look and feel. The Ruger is a sweet firearm and very
reliable. Just hard to pay that for a .22 rimfire. My 2 cents.

I thought that was a little high myself. The gun does seem to
       be good quality.

I bought the Ruger 10/22 Takedown model, in the Carbine styling.
And I love the gun, the whole set-up actually.
The gun comes in a beautifully designed MOLLE bag, giving lots
of storage room for extra mags, survival, camping or hunting
gear, and works like a charm. The gun takes down in a matter of
a second or so, goes back together almost as quickly (when
putting back together, the bolt has to be held back a quarter
       inch or so).
The two sided bag allows you the versatility of leaving a scope
on your 10/22, by using the 'other' side of the opened up bag.
On the other hand, that extra pocket allows me to put my T/C
Encore 22-250, scoped, with 15 inch barrel in the bag as well. I
then am equipped with one (a bit heavy, having two guns enclosed
within) bag, two complete guns, a 10/22 and a .22-250 or, (using
my .22LR barrel in the Encore) a .22 caliber 15 inch handgun.
I usually carry in the bag, two 32 round magazines for the
10/22, and several boxes of CCI (1640 fps) ammo as well. A pair
of 8X32 binoculars (Redfield, and they are awesome binoculars)
       ride along as well.
On occasion, I use the set-up as a truck or car gun, especially
when I'm anticipating going shooting on the trip or whatever
(visiting my kids and grandkids is always a spectacular
shootout, with many peices of paper meeting their match).
And finally, between your .17 and the 22-250, there is a good
hole in which to put a .22 Magnum to use. Using the new varmint
bullets (33 gr Accutip V) with 2200 fps velocities, fills that
hole substantially. And even deer can be had with the .22 magnum
using the heavier 45 grain WMR bullets by Hornady, at 1700fps,
with nearly 1000 fps at 200 yards. Better performance at that
distance than your .17, but much less recoil and muzzle blast
       than your 22-250.
I use a Marlin 882 SS, and even though I own several guns, I
expect this one to end up in my will

Welcome to the forum Shotgun Bill good to have you aboard.
Sounds like you have a great lineup of guns. I have given a lot
of thought about the .22 mag which as you stated would allow me
to fill the gap between the .17HMR and 22-250. I love both
these guns...each one is a tack driver and a joy to shoot.

       Hey Yote;
And thanks for the welcome. I'm glad to find a forum that has
something above and beyond AR's and AK's and M1's. Nothing wrong
with those of course, but being so doggoned popular, pretty
everything than can be said about them has been said over and
       over.
And yeah, I guess I'll end up with a .17 one of these days. The
problem I have with some guns, is caliber. By that I mean, I'm
buying ammo now for 12 or 13 different calibers, and being
something of a prepper, I feel I need to have lots of ammo for
any gun I own. So...whenever I'm contemplating buying another
gun, I'm trying to keep it within a caliber I already own.
And while there's no denying the benefits of certain (lots of
them in fact) calibers I'm purposely adding them slowly. For
instance, in just the 22-250, the cost of ammo is real high. So,
most of my carry handguns are 9mm. And while I know lots of
folks go with the .40S&W, I've resisted, since 9mm is a good
deal less expensive, readily available, and insofar as the use I
have for the guns, 9mm is good enough.
By the way, like your handle. Are you a coyote hunter?
If you are, I'd like to hear a short explanations of the methods
you use and so forth. At this point, most of my hunting is done
on garden raiding coons, crows and other suchlike (where a .22
       mag excells in my view).
Anyhow, thanks, and we'll catch you later!
       Shotgun Bill

I understand what you are saying indeed. Ammo is very expensive
and seems to creep up in price every year. I personally load
all my 22-250 ammo. It is an expensive round to buy indeed. I
can load a box for about $8.00. I also carry a Ruger 9mm. I am
on the fence wether it would be worth the time to reload the 9mm
since they are cheap from the factory. Might save a couple
bucks per box at most. Don't practice enough with the 9MM to
justify it right now. Yes....I love to coyote hunt. Over the
winter months I spend a lot of time in the woods and fields
hunting those crafty critters. I use the 22-250 and an
electronic call to get the job done. The call has many
different sounds to choose from such as: the dying rabbit, fawn
bleat, various rodents, birds,....etc. The good thing about the
electronic calls is you can separate yourself from the sound.
The yote is not as apt to spot you this way. It is very
addictive to call and kill your first yote. From that
       point...you are hooked....and it's a year round season.

Everyone should own a 22lr, it's your choice on which one you
buy. 10-22 is a good rifle, but a Savage MKII is a little better

       I shoot a Savage .17hmr with accutrigger....love that gun. If I
       didn't have this gun....I would buy a .22lr.

I own an "older" model Ruger 10/22 with a cheapo tasco scope.
The gun was my grandfathers and has been beat and banged around
for years and still shoots as true as the day he bought it. I
love that gun.. wouldn't trade it for anything.
Sure, it has sentimental value.. but it's truly a great gun.
