My first double... ALMOST
By: KyleM127 Date: January 23, 2013, 10:43 pm
---------------------------------------------------------
Let me start off by saying... what a hunt. I rolled my ankle
(its completely blue and swollen) playing basketball at the gym
two nights before.. and to be honest i can't walk all that well
on it, BUT after looking at the weather (freezing, mostly
cloudy, 2-3mph winds) I knew i couldn't miss out.
I headed out this mornin well before daylight and flipped a coin
to see where id go first ;D . After 20-25mins at my first set,
I was empty handed. So, I decided to my families farm b/c it was
close and I just enjoy spending time out there. I hobbled slowly
to a hill up against an oak and set another 20 minutes.. no
luck. I decided to make my way down the other side of the hill
and into the woods where I killed my buck this past year. Little
did I know my day was about to turn around...
I set up on top of a holler/creek completely in the woods.. but
it wasn't too thick. After around 5 minutes of some soft rabbit
distress I had the distinct smell of skunks surrounding me. They
made their way through some brush and headed my way.. At 10-15ft
I threw a stick at them to point them in the other direction
haha. A few minutes later something caught the corner of my eye
running over a hill directly to my left.. I thought it may be
the skunks just clearing the hill but I figured id get on the
back side of the tree i was on just in case.. I crawled around
directly behind where I originally was and hit the rabbit
distress. BOOM Two large coyotes came barreling over the hill at
20-25 yards about 2ft from each other! Immediately I was kickin
myself for not grabbing the shotgun like I had planned to do the
night before. I tried to whistle, I tried to yell.. I was froze
haha these dogs were staring directly at me and were in a full
sprint. I let off a shot and it did a spin and kept running.. I
stayed on it to get another shot, but it dropped after another
30 yards. At this point I'm completely standing up, bipod still
fully extended, swingin the .243 like an old western revolver. I
fumbled for the call remote on my lanyard and hit the pup
distress as soon as i could. I turned around in time to see the
female stop and look back at around 125yards through some brush.
She wasn't very concerned though, after a quick glance back she
was gone! I sat back down and tried calling her back for the
next 20 minutes but she knew better.
IF ONLY i would've brought the shotgun i could've easily leveled
both of them with one shot.. Oh well, ya live and ya learn. I'm
not greedy, I still have one dark black and red male. (shot once
again with the .243 and 55gr.) What an awesome hunt/morning.
P.S. I also saw a yote roaming a field a couple miles down the
road after i left.. I locked the brakes up on the work car and
hit the call but came up empty handed hahaha ;D Do drive-bys
count??
