17 Winchester Super Mag

Any of you heard anything about this round? I know that some
places are already selling the round for 17-20$$ a box. Suppose
to blow the doors off the HMR. Winny's rolling out the rifle
line in March i think. Hornady needs to pump up the volume on
the 17 HMR to a 25 grain.

I have read a little about it, I wonder how fast it is going to
be the hmr is at 2500 fps with a 20 grn and the 17 hornet is at
3600 with a 20 grn.
The cost for 50 hmr is about $14, and the hornet is about $20
for 25. It looks like there is room for another round in that
window, but I always felt the hm2 was never as popular as it
should be. I will not buy one, but to me the only rimfire is the
22 lr lol. I reload and once the brass is paid for on the 17
hornet it is cheaper to load for than to buy the hmr, but you
have to load for that to work out I do and I enjoy the loading
as much as the shooting!! So for me I will be waiting to see
what it actually turns out to be, I will not be buying one
though. My hole between the 6mm and the 22 lr was filled with
the 17 hornet but I have no doubt the 17 super mag will fill a
hole for plenty of people and maybe the competition will help
with ammo cost and supply for the rest of the rimfires too!!!

They say 3000fps. Don’t know with what bullet weight. I know
it is offered in a 20gr and a 25gr both, probably a 17gr. They
also keep saying 10% more than HMR rounds for cost… I would be
more interested if it was a larger heavier bullet, I personally
feel the little bullets have sort of reached their limit of
usefulness only from the standpoint of wind and such, I don’t
think the faster 17 really interests me.

I looked into the 17 hrnt and the 204. Just as you, I had little
interest and no particular use for either. In their defense
though, I already own a 223 and 22-250. If not for this I would
have purchased both.

I have read a bit on it and had a look at the ballistics. I’m
not impressed and I think there flat out pretending when they
say “center fire performance in a rim fire” it does not even
come close to 17 center fire, by leaps and bounds.

I don't see any advantages in it over my .17HMR.

it shoots a little flatter and has a 25gr option. Not real good
advantages in my mined but they are.

Not enough for anyone to switch from .17hmr to .17 win in my
opinion. Although I do like the 25gr option.

Winchester is betting on morons. Essentially what will happen
is a bunch of people with more spare money than brains will run
out and buy the new super mag. They will do it because of the
promise of center fire performance and they like the idea of
speed. Later they will come to the realization that a 25gr
bullet at 2600fps does not perform like it’s center fire
brothers that are slinging the same bullet at between
3800-4000fps. Next they will relies that it is not a huge
advantage over the HMR, some will admit it, most will put the
gun in the back of their safe and let it rot, never to admit it
was not a great purchase. Others will hold on to it and talk
about how great it is with no real reason as to why.
Having said that, there are some real positive uses for such a
round, but there the exception and not the rule. The people
with the real reasons to own it will suffer the added cost,
particularly when it flounders a bit and the ammo gets more
costly, like the 5mm.
Winchester if they wanted to put out a real useful rim fire
should have put a 36gr 20cal on top of a cartridge that would
have pushed 2700-3000fps. That would provide the performance
the people want from the rim fire to fill the gap that the 17
Super Mag will founder in.
