       Which Scope/Magnification to use?
       By: KyleM127 Date: December 30, 2012, 11:42 pm
       ---------------------------------------------------------
Okay so I've almost decided to buy/build a varmint gun. Right
now I'm using my Savage Axis .243 with the 3-9x40mm Bushnell
scope that came with it.. While this gun is doing its job, I'm
at the point where i want to add a gun to my collection and I
can't think of a better gun than a "varmint" gun.
       I ran into a Remington 700 model ADL 22-250 with a Barska
6-24x42mm scope for $425... I really like this gun, but there's
one problem.. It's right handed, I'm not. In most cases it's not
an issue, in fact I like the bolt action to be on the right
side.. BUT with this gun the stock is made for a right handed
shooter... for a south paw, its just uncomfortable. :(
So I have to find something else... I would like to build an AR,
but I've nearly completely ruled them out simply because of the
crazy prices right now. I considered a savage axis 22-250 with a
higher mag. scope... (a copy of your gun Hatch)
Any suggestions on gun/scope brand and/or model & scope
       magnification??
       Thanks guys!

I think the Axis is the best buy on the market currently. It was
the first synthetic stock I owned...different from wood and I
don't worry about scratches like my other guns...love it. The
.22-250 is the ultimate Varmint round second to none. They are
tack drivers out of the box. My glass is a Leaders 4-16X50 AO
lighted article red and green. Great scope...never lost
zero..clear at all powers. I do think a 4-12X50 is enough. The
50mm bell is a must for low light. Simmons and Bushnell scopes
are great scopes for the money as well. Nikon and Leupold are
very expensive scopes....supposed to be the best....I personally
think it's a waste of money. I know I will get some feedback
over this comment. I have been hunting for 43 years and never
owned a Nikon or Leupold brand scope, and have always hit what I
shot at. Lots of good brands of guns out there...none better
than a Savage. If you want to step up to the Accutrigger and
bull barrel like my .17HMR...nothing out there would hang with
       it. Good luck Kyle.

My thoughts are if you own the 700 restock it. I also feel a 50
mm on a 1inch tube is just extra cost and weight with little
gain in light transmission. Again just my thoughts. If you are
starting from scratch then by all means get what you want.

       I have a 4-16X40 and a 4-16X50...both 1" tubes....BIG difference
for me. I do agree.....if starting from scratch....get what you
       want.....but don't get what you don't need.

To much mirage on any thing over 12 power. I like the Redfield
4X12 for just a pinch over $200 .I drag mine through some purity
tuff hunting and never had a glitch. I keep it on 4 . You always
have time to turn it up but NEVER have time to turn it down.!

I really appreciate the feedback guys... bigger forums usually
end up arguing or get way off track and rarely have real advice
or help for the topic.. Seems as if we have a good group of
       people on this site.
Now back to the gun ;D I decided that if i was going to spend
the money, to wait and buy something i was more comfortable
with. After I decided not to buy it, my dad decided he needed it
haha so either way i can still use it. BUT, I want my own
22-250. I think I've decided on a savage preferably with the
accutrigger and possibly accustock. (i'm not a fan of the stock
savage trigger on my .243, need to get it down a 1/2 lb. or so)
As far as glass, i was thinkin 4-18x50mm... or somethin
similar... I will check into leapers or comparable products in
       both dollar signs and quality.

I'll always push a Remington 700 because of the value it carries
in the gun market, even if it's 50 years old. And because the
skies the limit when your talking about customization. But i
would also go with a Savage/Stevens rifles. They can be modifed
at home with little to no help from a gunsmith.
As far as optics, spend more money there...quality glass will
make a huge difference in how/when you hunt and gives you
repeatable performance. Most of My scopes wear Leupolds because
they've never failed me, the glass quality is awesome and the
price within in reason for the performance. Scopes like Vortex
and Sightron have been gaining alot of fans with very little
complaints about the quality and big raves over their customer
service. But since i've never owned one, I won't comment on
       them, in fairness.
