I mold my own round balls in .440, .490 for my rifles and .375
for my pistol. I buy conicals for my Encore, 300 gr Platnum
Power Belts for the .45 and 250 gr XTP's for the .50 cal barrel.
My .45 Encore is one of the original production guns, they have
a 1 in 20 twist barrel. It was discovered that that was too fast
to shoot the lighter bullets so they changed it to 1 in 28.

Reading this link for some reason reminds me of my younger days
when I would gather up some old tire weights and mold my own
sinkers for fishing. Bwana J....do you tumble them after you
mold to get them really smooth?

I have never tumbled them, I use Lyman molds and they do a great
job. I do know some guys that shoot Match with Black Powder and
these guys are fanatics when molding their own balls and
conicals. They even weigh every bullet to be sure they're as
close to the same as possible.

Yeah....I fIgured tumbling them would make them more consistent
       and accurate.

When I cast for my muzzle loaders I only use pure lead, not sure
what tumbling would do to them. I've always had pretty good luck
with them right out of the mold.

How expensive is it to shoot a front loader compared to loading
       your own in .22-250?

It all depends on whether you're shooting round balls or
jacketed bullets. Round ball would be cheaper than shooting
.22-250's but jacketed bullets like my 300 gr Powerbelt bullets
are more expensive than .22-250's. For 15 Platinum powerbelts I
pay about $27 but they're well worth the money. Loaded over 150
gr of powder you could hunt Brown Bear with them. A bit overkill
on white tails but I don't normally have to track them very far,
they really do the job well.

Wow....I had no idea one could generate that much knockdown with
blackpowder.....but that is a wad of lead I do say. Not that
expensive to shoot at all...thanks for the info. Just may take
       the plunge.

One word of caution, its addicting :). If at all possible try to
get together with someone who's been into Black powder for
awhile, will really shorten the learning curve. Many States
offer special Muzzle loading deer seasons and that will give you
more time to spend in the Outdoors as well as putting some deer
       in the freezer.

I have an Encore Endeavor muzzle loader. Never taken a deer
past 100 with it but to prove a point I have punched paper all
the way out to 200. The group size was not all that bad but the
drop was larger than I would want to play with in the field.

Welcome to the forum. I agree, deer past 100 yards with a front
loader is pushing it I would think.
