       Scope magnifications

I have a 4x12x40 for my groundhog rifle. I was thinking this
will have to do for some of my stretched out shots. I was
wondering how much more I would gain by going to a 6x18x50?

Welcome to the forum....glad you signed up. Concerning
magnification....I currently shoot 4-16x50. I really like this
magnification...and the 50mm gathers light very well in low
light. Bumping up magnification from 4-12 to 4-18 will be a big
jump. I think you will be very pleased with the results.

I use a 6.5x20x50 Simmons Whitetail Classic and really am
pleased with it. As long as you have a solid rest higher
magnification can be a good thing but you'll be able to see your
       heartbeats in the scope ;D.

       I agree.....my 4-16x50 does a great job @ 16 power....but you do
need to use some stixs or bipod.

       I'm a fan of magnification, some guys aren't. I don't go lower
than a 3x9 on deer rifles that i walk/push with, but my LHR
rifle which i use when i still hunt has a 5x20 on in. I would
rather have it and not need it, than need it and not have it.

I suppose it depends what cartridge you shoot and how far. I
like to see my hits so will use the max magnification that
allows that. With a solid rest and light recoiling rifle
       @25power would be my preferance.

       I totally agree....3x9 is the lowest I will own. I use a
4-16X50 on my 22-250. Most coyote kills are between 6-12 power
for me...but it's good to know I have some zoom left if I need
       it.

       I run:
       3x9x40
       4-12x42
6-24x50~Gernerally go no higher than 12x
       Mostly depends on the calibre.

       I run:
       3x9x50 for deer
       6.5x20x50 for groundhogs
       40x for benchrest
       45x for groundhog matches

I use 3x9's on all of my hunting rifles, but as I'm getting older
       I put a 6x24x50 on my Savage 17 Hummer !
