The Briefing
By: Maderfole Date: October 14, 2013, 6:51 pm
---------------------------------------------------------
Royal Orb Ship Dawnblade, main briefing room
There was a lot of whispering speculation going on in the room.
Not only was there gathered some of the USN top Mecha pilots all
in one place, but most of them had come in at emergency notice,
some quite literally taken off the field of battle, out of
missions in operation, and recalled to the Dawnblade for a top
secret briefing on a new extant threat. Supreme Commander
Waltfeld was known to have something of a fast and loose style
of strategic command, but this was hasty and makeshift even for
him. That meant that he really had been caught off guard by
whatever this new problem was, and that was not a good sign. Of
course, High Command dealt with all sorts of unpleasant
surprises from the enemy on a daily basis, but few such
surprises required such a degree of immediate action. It could
be said with little exaggeration that the 8 pilots gathered here
in this room represented the strong left fist of the USN
military, only a step or two removed from the legendary Orb
Gundams and the new BALORs in power. On one hand, it was
exciting and reassuring, to look around at the talent in the
room and know that High Command considered you to be on the same
plane as the others present, and that there were probably few
things that you could not overcome on the battlefield with such
allies.
On the other, what sort of threat could there be that would
require all 8 of you to be emergency deployed in order to be
considered an acceptable response? Speculation is finally cut
short when the one eyed Stormhound standing guard at the hatch
leading into the room suddenly stiffens to attention and calls
out "ATTENTION ON DECK" In a voice that could have lifted dust
from the floor, had there been any. However, it wasn't Supreme
Commander Waltfeld that strode to the head of the room. The
person come to brief them was no less recognizable though, with
his distinctive silver white hair and even more distinctive
slashing scar across his face. Commander Yzak Joule, one of the
most famous of all Mobile Suit pilots, Gundam Ace and hero of
more desperate battles than everyone on the room could count
with all fingers combined, regarded them all through narrowed
blue eyes. He wore a modified version of the iconic old ZAFT
Redcoat uniform, as due to his status he was allowed to wear
pretty much anything he cared to wear in terms of uniform.
Accompanying Yzak was a slightly older man with red hair and
plain eyes, dressed in a business suit and tie clipped to his
shirt in the low gravity of the ship, rather than a military
uniform, though his bearing and posture bespoke an undeniable
military background. "You may be seated." Yzak said, returning
the salutes of the gathered pilots and waving them to their
chairs once more. "First off, on behalf of the Supreme
Commander, I express his regrets that his duties demand that he
be unavailable to brief you in person, despite his desires.
This situation has caught us all on the wrong foot, and he is
closeted with the War Council trying to figure what the hell
just happened, and who the hell is to blame." Yzak's eyes blazed
as he spoke, his temper clearly straining at its leash. "I
cannot tell you everything you wish to know about the situation,
as it is classified beyond even MY need to know, apparently.
However, I can assure you that the problem requires a military
solution, and that failure is not an option. Which is why we
have gathered all of you, despite the immense cost and
operational disruption required. The Supreme Commander has
faith in you, as does the rest of the War Council. As do I."
"This is Martin Discosta, Special Aide in charge of Intelligence
to the Solar President." Yzak indicated the man at his side.
"He will be assisting me in briefing you about the situation.
This entire briefing will be conducted without AI support, and
no electronic notes are allowed. Part of this problem may be an
issue with our data security systems, and both LEXI and NAMARA
have been nearly compromised in the past, and we cannot afford
any hint of forewarning to the enemy about our actions in
response to this situation." Yzak glared around the room,
meeting each person's eyes individually, to make sure they
understood the seriousness of his words. After satisfying
himself that all were paying rapt attention and understood the
gravity of the scenario, he took a small remote from one pocket
and clicked it, activating the wallscreen viewer. It showed a
vast expanse of white terrain, obviously taken from high
altitude or low orbit.
"This is Antarctica, the site of what was once the unofficial
5th Theatre base, Nifelheim. Nifelheim was a facility of Fenris
Enhanced Armaments Researchers, commonly known as FEAR, who
until their recent nationalization provided most of the advanced
and esoteric military technologies to the USN. Even now they
continue to be responsible for the new BALOR units in which the
Solar President has placed so much faith as anti-Executor
tools." Yzak's frown at that bit of info conveyed his feelings
of misgiving about that idea more than well enough. "Nifelheim
was where the BALOR project was brought to fruition, as well as
serving as the primary base for the Extended Supersoldier
regiment during most of the first part of the war, and as a
repository for all sorts of still classified military projects
and experiments. Most of which, we are now discovering, were
conducted entirely without USN oversight or even knowledge they
existed at all! Apparently FEAR, under former Chief Director
Dr. Natalia Dostanya, has been playing their own game under the
USN's nose for quite some time now."
"It was only after Nifelheim was attacked and destroyed by
Executor Frost..." Yzak twitched at the mention of the name,
though he managed to keep his voice more or less even. "That
the wider USN had the opportunity to investigate Nifelheim
without FEAR interference. The main base complex was
irrefutably annihilated by the Kratos's AMP Cannon, but we are
discovering that Nifelheim itself was merely the tip of the
iceberg, if you'll permit the bad pun. Sub-complexes dot the
surrounding kilometers of tundra and mountains, and even extend
out into the nearby ice bay, far beyond any base specifications
the USN has access too. For that matter, we strongly suspect
that there might be a whole second base, buried well underneath
the ruins of the first, a base the USN never even knew existed.
Furthermore, our data about the surrounding terrain and
environment has been corrupted or obscured somehow, due to high
level interference in the systems. I'm talking War Council
level, to underscore the seriousness of this interference, from
a source we still cannot find."
"Given how much of the USN top level technology derives from
FEAR, we cannot allow this facility, destroyed, damaged,
inactive or flourishing, to exist beyond our control. We have
received strong indications of a major Edenite task force
heading towards the area, likely on an investigative mission of
their own. We know their Executors aren't involved, at least
not yet, so we need to nip this curiosity in the bud quickly,
send them packing, and then secure the site ourselves, so we can
follow up with a proper investigation of the site with all the
resources at the USN's command. We have dropped a forward
command base from low orbit, codenamed Azure Shield, into the
snow plains to the East of where the main Nifelheim complex used
to be. You will rendezvous with this base and use it as a
staging post for securing the area from outside interference.
Once you have seen off the Edenites and any other potential
intruders, you have authorization to conduct a preliminary
survey of the base ruins. We need eyes on the ground down
there, and you are our chosen instruments." Yzak stepped back to
allow Dicosta to step up.
The Special Aide wasted no time on pleasantries, and plunged
directly into the briefing. "Though most of Section 9's
classified surveillance data on the area is missing or
corrupted... probably due to the actions of the last Director,
Supreme Commander ze Burrel, who was known to be romantically
linked to Dr. Dostanya... we can give you a few basic tips about
what you might find waiting down there. Antarctica has always
been one of the most hostile environments known to mankind, and
that was before the Eden Disaster screwed up the world's climate
and weather patterns. The temperature down there rarely rises
above negative 40 degrees, cold enough that any Mecha deployed
to the area on long term duty need special lubricants to avoid
freezing up when on patrol. Your Mecha are being serviced and
tuned for this reason right now. The weather itself is beastly,
with frequent blizzards and windstorms powerful enough to flip a
tank over if it isn't well grounded. There's a particularly
nasty storm brewing which will be in full flow by the time you
get down there, unfortunately."
Dicosta zoomed the wallscreen in on the Azure Shield, a barely
visible glow of prismatic color where the base's heavy Redoubt
Dome shields flared against the near whiteout conditions of the
weather. "The Azure Shield has been dropped about 15 kilometers
from the main base area, now known as Nifelheim crater, and its
about 15 more kilometers to the western ice bay, where we
suspect there to be some sort of submarine base or supply dock.
The terrain in the snow fields is mostly snow dunes, with a few
ridges of rock and ice. The storm will lower your flight
ceiling considerably, but should also make aerial assault from
the enemy impossible. You'll need Vari-Cameras or other
advanced sensors to see through the blizzard, though hopefully
the snow flurries will stick to any enemy machines and reveal
their position. We know that some of the snow dunes are
actually artifical camouflage, concealing vertical launch tubes
connected to a major underground hanger facility of some sort.
We have uncovered and activated 2 of these VLTs near the Azure
Shield. With their aid, rapid deployment to other battlezones
should be fairly easy."
"However, there could be dozens more of these VLTs scattered
throughout the snow plains, and most can only be accessed
through the underground facility. You should make it a priority
to try and discover where this facility is accessed from, and
then get control of it." Discosta recommended. "Our information
on other geographical zones is unfortunately less complete. We
know that the far western reaches of the area are coastline,
with a very deep bay frozen over by ice (the Western Bay), the
weather there should remain clear for the foreseeable future.
To the North lies a major glacier field (Northern Glacier
Field), with breathtaking ice spires that stretch hundreds of
meters into the sky, and extreme windstorms. To the south lies
an active volcanic region (Southern Volcanic Highlands), forced
into wakefulness by the AMP cannon hit on Nifelheim itself. Our
sensors can hardly pierce the smoke clouds in that area, but we
do know that there are several erupting volcanoes, so expect the
terrain to be especially treacherous."
"Finally, connecting all these areas is the Nifelheim base
complex itself. Or, as it is now known, Nifelheim Crater,
thanks to the Kratos." Discota called up an image of the area,
but it quickly degenerated into little more than static fuzz.
"The entire area has been adversely affected and environmentally
damaged by the AMP explosion. Radiation counts in the high red
levels of the scale, and that's in the outer regions. The
crater itself is far more toxic, and is releasing some sort of
unknown particle or energy which has completely foiled our
attempts to scan the area. Unfortunately, the crater area is
also where we believe most of the access-ways to the underground
portions of the base and its sub-complexes are located, so
you'll have to investigate it and keep it patrolled in case of
enemy infiltrators. For that matter, because of the storm
conditions and other environmental problems, you'll have to at
least skirt the crater to travel to any of the other major
geographical zones, at least when traveling on the surface or in
the air."
"This will not be an easy mission." Yzak stepped forward again.
"But that is why we called upon you. Because we know that when
the USN needs a victory in a tough spot, it is you people that
will provide it for us, without fail." He let that sink in for a
moment. "If you have any other questions, ask them now. We
need to get you people groundside before the Eddies get
established and burrowed in like ticks..."
xxxx
Eastern Snow Desert (USN Starting zone): 10km by 10km, with a
flight ceiling of 2km (any higher and the storm conditions make
moving or combat impossible for Mecha sized targets. Anyone
breaching this zone is Stunned for 3 rounds, no resistance or
reduction allowed, but cannot be targeting either and is
randomly placed at the top of the flight ceiling somewhere else
on the map when unstunned. They take 1000 B damage per round
spent stunned from savage battering by winds and hail).
Predominant terrain is snow drifts, about 20 meters in height
and 100 meters in diameter, with several long ridges of ice and
rock running across the zone. Snow drifts provide 25% bonus
miss chance against ranged attacks from outside Close range to
any mecha less than 30 meters in height, as well as 25 AV vs E
and 10 AV vs B (artillery cannon excluded) for every snow drift
between you and the attacker. The ice/rock ridges are 100 meters
high, and completely block Line of Sight against any target
within 3 hexes of them, unless you are at least 1500 meters in
the air.
Ground movement across drifts is reduced by 20%. Ground Mecha
have a 5% chance per 1 round of reload (based on slots/size, not
modified by chassis, reactors or perks, does not apply to FRALA)
on a weapon they fire of being embedded into the ground by
recoil, being Knocked Down (-20% AS/DS) and Pinned (0 speed) for
1 round. Anyone getting cover bonus from snow drifts can be
embedded, regardless of whether they are on the ground or not
(no hovering 2 meters off the ground tricks). Hoverthrusters
removes movement Speed penalty on ground and reduces embedded
chance to 1% per round of reload. Scale system makes you immune
to be embedded, and removes movement speed penalty on the
ground.
Entire zone is constantly under effect of a Blizzard. 20% miss
chance with Ranged attacks, Distant range reduced by 50%, -40%
cloak DS. Vari-Cameras negate the miss chance and range
reduction (but apply their own range reduction in turn).
Azure Shield is the Blue Castles, Dome Shield Range is the thin
blue line. Black X's are uncovered VLTs. Zone Boundary to
Nifelheim Crater is on the far left side of the map, opposite
the Azure Shield, represented by a Red Line. Your Mecha can
start on any hex within 10 hexes of a Blue Castle hex.
Vertical Launch tubes: 2 uncovered tubes near the Azure Shield.
Any Mecha which enters an uncovered Launch tube from the
surface, or through the underground facility, can launch
themselves on their next action, while also being untargetable
except at Melee range by enemies while within the Tube. When
you launch, you gain triple Speed for 3 rounds. This speed
bonus ends instantly if you make an attack, unless you have
HSCM, in which case you may act normally. There are 2 uncovered
VLT's within 1000 meters of the Azure Shield (marked with Black
X's on map). You cannot enter the underground facility through
a VLT.

Roland quickly went through the pages of the info folder he had
been given for this mission, his eyes scanning the contents for
any extra information. What he saw, made him feel concerned and
excited at the same time. "Looks like the Edenites are sending
their very best." He muttered to Marie, who was sitting nearby.
"These guys have cause a lot of problems for the USN." Roland
added as he took in the list of suspected Edenite pilots being
sent to Antarctica.
He was excited about the possibility to fight such capable
warriors, yet at the same time, concerned that those same pilots
would be doing their best to kill him. That last part was
particularly troubling if the information on their capabilities
and achievements was even marginally true.
Roland then noticed that some of the enemy pilots had very
little info attached to them. Probably they weren't able to get
anything important on these ones. Roland though while listening
to the briefing. Once it was over, Roland decided to try his
luck and ask Commander Joule for more info. Perhaps he wouldn't
get anything, perhaps Roland would receive Yzak's personal
opinion on the matter. He didn't mind. When going up against
these kinds of pilot, every bit of info helped.
"I have a question, sir." Roland raised his hand. "I studied the
information on the potential enemy forces and noticed that some
of the information is missing. I understand that these reports
were made ahead of time, so there is the possibility of new bits
of information being in our possession. Things that haven't been
included in the reports. Do you have any additional information
available on the enemy forces? Even if it's a personal opinion.
Every bit helps."

The moment he left the launch bay, Roland felt the Edelweiss
being grabbed by the storm and shaken like a pebble. The wind
was so strong, he could feel its force even though he was inside
the Edelweiss's cockpit, secured in the GRS. He quickly adjusted
his thrusters in order to compensate for the powerful wind and
steered his Gundam towards the ground. With the powerful wind
making it difficult to fly it seemed like the fighting would
take place near the ground. The Edelweiss shuddered slightly as
he made contact with the densely packed mixture of snow and ice.
Fortunately, the recently installed scale system immediately
went to work and quickly helped him stabilize his machine.
Once the landing was done, Roland moved towards where he had
seen a massive crater in the distance. He saw his allies spread
out in order to gather more information about the nearby area,
but decided not to join the collective effort. Instead he
decided to move in the direction from where the enemy was most
likely to arrive so that he could draw their attention to him.

"So we eliminate or neutralize enemy combatants, then begin our
investigations. And given the nature and secrecy of this
mission, we won't receive any backup at all, whether from
Patriot units, Incarnate support, even a better satellite scan,
except what they had on the ground, and the Azure Shield. Sounds
familiar to a mission I did once, sir, if I might add. And I'm
assuming there is no way to compromise with the Edenites in
finding the data underneath the Nifelheim Crater, since they're
all state secrets, huh?" Jacen added, looking through the pilot
lists absent-mindedly.
One of the pilots, a boy named Zes, was a familiar name to
Jacen, having met him once or twice in a sim run and a mission,
as well as in the Arena. The boy was.... unhinged, so to speak.
The boy was truly insane, to a point, but he did have a grasp of
his psychic powers that could be formidable. Then again, Jacen's
own training, as well as the surgery he underwent the last few
months ago, helped him gain a defense of sorts against such
psychic intrusion. The rest of the pilots.... he did not know of
or flew against or with personally, but heard some rumors,
especially of Afransia Chara Dux, Dante Santoro, Christopher
Anemoi, Aedan Thevshii, Monica Frangere, Arthon Reiland, and
Sarah Ancalimë. Jacen didn't earn his FAITH pins from slacking
off the intel, he knew for a fact that good intel could make or
break a fight. These pilots were already involved with several
daring attacks and raids against the USN, and to have them here,
right in his face, was a daring prospect. "As for these pilots,
as far as I can remember from FAITH briefings," Jacen said,
bringing down the folder and pointing to the familiar names
posted on the board who had no intel on them, "these guys are no
pushovers. They've been involved in several major operations
against the USN, including but not limited to the defense of
Urbanis, the attack on the USNS Monarch's shipyard, the defense
of Ronin City against the rogue USN Admiral Mikelhaus, as well
as several other missions. There was also a rumor that they
participated in the destruction of Ceres and the loss of Conrad
Koster, the Black Hand. Well, good riddance to that spineless
bastard, if you ask me, but going back, these guys are not to be
trifled with. We certainly picked one hell of a fighting roster,
if you ask me, and we're not going to get off lightly."

Law listened to Roland and Jacen talk to Commander Joule, while
reading the intel file. It made him twitch. Zes? Monica? He was
about to end up on opposite sides as his former comrades and
friends, in the former's case? How did that even happen? Should
he get a chance, he will definitely ask some questions. Getting
a chance, though might be a problem.. And he it didn't seem like
he'd have the luxury of shooting to disable, not kill. He sighed
on the inside. His friendship with the little fella would face a
major bump..
As for people like Dante, Elise, Chris and Aedan, he met them
very briefly during the joint mission on Celes. He hadn't really
gotten the chance to talk to them, but they've shown to be, for
the most part, competent fighters. Some of the other names
struck a chord too, but mostly as rumours flying around the
Galileo base, since back then he didn't really have access to
much more. This one wasn't going to be easy.. But the complete
rebuild that Bifrost has undergone made him feel a little
optimistic.

For Marie's part, she was impressed that they had this much
intel. An emergency scrambled into a situation that high
command clearly didn't have a handle on, confronted by not only
the Edenites but at least two unknown factions, and they STILL
had detailed information on some of the opponents they'd be
facing. Quite a feat, one to be applauded if it weren't for the
fact that she and the others were about to risk their lives
going into this situation. A mere three months ago Marie would
have been all jittery, but by now she had learned to control
such impulses. She had to admit, too, they had quite the array
of firepower on this mission, even without support. Not so long
ago the Razor had one of the biggest guns, but at least two of
the mechs on the team dwarfed her firepower. That was okay by
Marie, though, seeing as she had the most finesse of any of the
big gun users. The standard USN doctrine overall was quite
comforting, as the Edenite's stealth meant little against
saturation bombardment...
Not all was well, though. Marie was still sore about abruptly
being pulled out of South America. Not at command, as she
pretty much agreed with their reasoning regarding the decision.
She didn't like how that operation had been conducted though,
not in the slightest. It had been a quagmire of epic
proportions, and she resoundly hoped some people had learned
their lesson from it. Typically she didn't speak up that much
where the plan was involved, leaving it to "the boys" as it
were, but this time she fully intended to make her opinion known
and throw around some of that trust invested in her by high
command. Even if most of the team was of similar caliber, they
could still definitely benefit from a 'voice of reason'
occasionally.

Post: Approaching the drop zone Marie mentally focused on
trigger discipline. The incident with Law earlier was still
fresh in her mind, and she wasn't going to be having any of
that! Part of her was mad that there hadn't even been time to
speak about that before the mission, really, and even if there
was, it would be bad for morale, but it was definitely going to
be lingering in the air for some time... At the very least the
team seemed to have learned from the experience.
Vectoring in slightly North of Azure Shield, unlike the bulk of
her allies heading West, Marie mentally flicked a few buttons to
overlay a search grid around the area. Despite the upgrade to
an NIC system, Marie was just so used to the old style controls
she sometimes visualized herself still sitting in the old
cockpit. This was a large battlefield, and the one thing that
was sure was that the enemy wouldn't be right up on them
immediately. She estimated only about a minute or so before
they needed to worry, but still, that was valuable time. Intel
wasn't just needed to figure out what the hell FEAR had been
doing here, but to secure knowledge of the surrounding
landscape. Marie aimed for over the first ridgeline, gently
setting down and conducting a slow sweep between it and the
next. At first she kept an eye on Roland and the team setting
up defenses, or her wingmen also covering the ridge, a residual
showing of her jitters, but she quickly reminded herself to
focus. If she was dazing off now she could miss something
vital! As a last distracted she made sure her emergency
cloaking device was on, as if the enemy did show up somehow she
didn't want to be picked off as easy prey...
(Start 10 hexes N of base, fly over ridge, slow to needed speed
and walk towards the next one, scanning for goodies. Cloak ON.)

Law plummeted down to the drop zone at speed the previous
Bifrost could barely even dream of. It was a meticulous and
tedious process, but give it to USN's best mechanics and his
MA's capabilities quadrupled. It also meant, though, a change in
fighting style. First time in combat like this and already a
huge one.. Law was a bit nervous, but had faith in both his
machine and his comrades, all of whom were trusted veterans he'd
met on different battlefields. There was something incredibly
reassuring about their presence.
The moment he saw the ground, he activated his cloak, a new
addition to his equipment, but a useful one when combined with
some of his latest upgrades. Noticing his allies breaking off
one by one, he drew his attention to the white strip between two
rows of ridges, where the Azure Shield rested. Informing his
team he was going to stick to this part until need be and/or
further notice, he descended north of the Dome. The blizzard
obstructed his vision, but only for a second before Vari-Cameras
kicked in, coordinated by his trusty co-pilot. He learned one
thing from his previous assignment and that was knowing your
ground. As soon as Bifrost made it to roughly 10 meters above
ground, he activated an array of sensors and began scouting,
while keeping a low profile.
(- start 10 hexes north of base
- move north-east to cover the corner between the ridge and map
border with scouting vision
- proceed along the ridge westward, maintaining 5 hexes, or
whatever the scanning range is, from it and keeping maximum
scouting speed
- active components: PR Cloak, Vari-cams with Tactical CIC
active; Kamikaze in reserve, so not used yet).

Antartica. The place was, from his landing zone, a cold desert
of ice. From the readings of the Teotl-Tlatoani, the environment
was as hostile as it can be to anybody without some sort of
hardsuit. Even machines such as Gundams would have a hard time
fighting out in this sort of environment. A fitting place for an
evil lair, Jacen mused, as he set the Teotl-Tlatoani near the
Azure Shield. Before he landed, he saw a few ridges, obscured
from the Azure Shield's scanners.
"I'm going to scout on ahead." Jacen said as he flew the
Teotl-Tlatoani up the mountain ridge, activating both his
Hoverthrusters and Vari-Cameras, both to negate the
environment's effects on him. He held his guns at the ready now,
he didn't want to be caught with his pants down while scouting.
(Ready; Begin in Gunslinger Style, activate Vari-Cameras, start
10 hexes N of base, fly over ridge and land to the area beside
Orange, activate Hoverthrusters and Vari-Cameras, slow to needed
speed and walk towards the next one, scanning for goodies. Pic

provoke him into attacking me and then proceed to deny him close
range until he's forced to teleport next to me in which case I

than 40% of my total HP score in damage or suffering a
debilitating for the duration of this round attack them if their
not on team independent using an in style attack as listed
above, regen priority is to replacing weapons then special
equipment then actual HP, Attack negations are only to be used
against attacks that will cause a debilitating effect on me or
will cause more than 30% of my current HP level in damage, If
i'm stunned by any means immediately fly back to the base and
enter a repair bay by the quickest route. After I use either 1 I
Got Better or 4 uses of Extended Tranquility immediately
activate my Gamma Glipheptim Boost: (10% AS/DS boost, 150% N
resistance, N/P stun immunity, Fear Immunity, 9/9 round
duration), if EMP stunned and I can't negate it with a Backup-OS
immediately use Hotwiring to negate it activating Gamm
Glipheptim as necessary to prevent the damage from Hotwiring
from stunning me and assuming I won't lose more than 30% of my
total HP from doing so. Save the Photon Cloak for E/S attacks
that will cause me damage and are not being used by the
Testament. Also, remain at least 500 meters above the ground at
all time.
