Some of you know me, many will not.
My name is Gauge, and I have done crime patrols for thirty
years. I've trained others to do so. In December, 2009, I joined
another RLSH forum after moving to the area I now patrol. I
started doing handouts in different areas of the city. Recently,
I've refocused on crime patrols due to increased violent
activity.
I've avoided forums for awhile now. I won't be very active here,
but feel free to reach out. I'll respond as much as I can.
I look forward to seeing this forum flourish.

It's a mix of both. We have a large population of homeless in
Portland, and not enough resources to help them all. Violence
within the homeless community flourishes in this environment. If
basic needs can be met, it would help, so I hand out clean socks
and underwear when I can, but mostly make an effort to protect
the younger ones who may have gender identity issues or are more
vulnerable on the street. Often it's just helping find shelters
and food. Rarely it's physical protection, but that's
accomplished most often just by being present.

I see that the Portland government has legalised urban camping,
as opposed to, say, making more cheap housing available. Hoo
boy.
I've got some resources on living outdoors and hard times.

I'll get a look at that tomorrow, and thanks for the share. I'm
preparing a pitch to the mayor's office for a shipping container
temporary housing solution, and I hope to see city council in a
couple of months. Homeless camps are numerous here. The city has
taken to laying boulders at spots to make camping impossible,
but there's still many camps near freeway ramps and in
residential neighborhoods. Our government has few long-term
ideas, so we'll see what our citizens can do.

I've got a copy of this, but it looks like there's a
proliferation of books on shipping containers as houses.

Sweet jumpin' catfish, there's a lot of books on the subject.
Some of them look really nice. I know I've lived in worse.
I think an important part of the pitch to a city council is
having really nice-looking concept art and mock-ups, nobody
wants some Kowloon Walled City-looking cyberpunk monstrosity
that their government will be remembered for, but a pretty
Solarpunk lego city with murals and parks and markets could be a
tourist pull, lol.
The only thing I'd add to that is keep in mind that some
shipping containers are made with unsafe materials or paint, and
that their roofs are sometimes deceptively weak, they are only
made to support another container at the four corners, and I've
heard of people parkouring onto them and falling right through.
Apparently it's not even safe to bury them, they don't support
the weight of soil on top.
I know one artist in particular who might be perfect for concept
art, he's an old underground cartoonist and a high-tier
electrical engineer for Ma Bell, if he was agreeable he'd be the
guy for both a pretty art pitch, and for the actual schematics
to construct such a large scale endeavour. And he could wire it
up, too.
Maybe you could contact one of the Food Undergrounds about
setting up inner-city and rooftop gardening, and food co-ops.

I've got people on board who have worked with our various city
governments for our mass transit design. They have the good
design contact I need for safe and efficient housing design of
this type. I want to crowdfund the project in part, to help
offset costs, and I may have some material being donated for the
interiors.
