       Not Far from the Tree
By: Applejack Date: July 27, 2016, 2:15 pm
       ---------------------------------------------------------
Applejack yawns softly as she trots out onto the fields of Sweet
Apple Acres with a plethora of woven baskets, pulling her
disheveled hat against her head. If it wasn't already apparent
by her frizzy, yellow mane, her equally unkempt tail, or her
distant, albeit unfocused stare, the hard-working mare didn't
seem to get much rest the night prior. In fact, it looked like
she hardly slept at all, if any. Applejack squints, trying to
shield her tired, green eyes as the blinding sun poked out from
the treetops, illuminating the mare's workload for the day. With
another yawn, she raises a hoof and taps lightly against one of
the trees, feeling and listening for that particular spot she
always liked to aim for when bucking for apples. The strength of
the mare's back legs were certainly never questioned, however,
most ponies never seemed to notice that Applejack would almost
always strike the same spot on almost every tree. It wasn't just
raw strength, but an art; the ability to know exactly where to
hit just at a glance. Except, now that the frazzled mare was
already late to her chores to begin with, she might as well take
her time. Even the most hard working of mares could be lazy from
time to time, no? Applejack shakes her head, almost snorting as
she places the baskets underneath the tree and turns around,
lining up her strike. It's that kind of thinking that gets her
in trouble, she thought. She'd take it nice and slow for the
day, but no laziness. One-hundred and ten percent, all the way.
Applejack takes her time, drawing a deep breath before rearing
up and hitting the tree with a resounding thud.

Brash, having caused a stir the previous day and ending up
getting the wrong kind of attention, needed a place to hide.
Sweet Apple Acres is a large farm and information gathered had
told her that only two ponies worked the harvest at any given
time, there was no way she'd be found.
She sleeps peacefully on a large branch of a tree she'd eaten an
apple from. Her dreams, always confusing, would give her much to
think about come morning. However her sleep is interrupted as
the tree quakes, herself and a bushel of apples fall directly
into a basket. She's buried head first with only her hind-legs
sticking out from the pile. She groans in both pain and
frustration as she finds that she hasn't awoken enough to muster
       the strength to escape.

Applejack didn't even turn around at first, yawning once more as
she looks up at all the trees around her with a small huff. Must
of been a large batch, she thought to herself, noting that the
apples sounded much heavier than normal. The mare takes a just a
couple moments to plan her route, nodding in self-approval as
she turns around to hoist the baskets full of apples onto her
       back. Except...
"What the hay?!" Applejack cries out with a start, visibly
startled by a pair of legs protruding from her basket of apples.
"TWILIGHT! ARE YOU MESSIN' WITH MY APPLES AGAIN?" The mare
didn't pause to think first, partly attributed to her own lack
of sleep which had now been quite readily jarred from her. She
stops herself as she overheard a rather miffed groan, blinking
slowly as her brain caught up with the rest of her... And then
       it hit her.
"Oh my sweet Celestia are you okay little one?" Applejack rushes
over, practically tipping the entire basket onto its side to
free the rest of the dark-gray filly. "Did Applebloom put you up
to this? She knows darn well that dozin' off in trees can be
dangerous!" Applejack refrains from scooping her up like she
would the others, but she does at least check her over for any
       possible injuries.

Brash tumbles out from the basket an apple eaten to its core
stuck to her hair. She gets on her hooves as she listens to
Applejack talk. She hears the blame put on another and
instinctively responds, "Yes, none of this is my fault."
She looks around, registering the morning sun with a pained
squint, concluding that the construction of her new home would
still be a while longer. She would need a plan to keep away from
the public in the meantime. She concludes that the
aforementioned pony must be a foal around her same age, "Me and
uh, Purple Loom, are friends and I request to be taken to her in
order to resolve this matter." She begins a few morning
stretches, never meeting eyes with Applejack at any point.

Applejack blinks, tilting her head off to one side with a
confused, but otherwise blank expression. The filly seems to be
okay, thank Celestia, but now Applejack has a mystery pony on
her hooves... And she still had work to do, nevermind that she's
already had a late start. "I'm afraid Applebloom is out of town
with our big brother for the next few days. What's your name,
sugarcube?" Applejack offers a warm smile, reaching over to
remove the bit of apple from the filly's mane. "And if ya don't
mind me askin', why're ya all the way out here all by yourself?"

"The name's Brash." She flicks the apple core from her hair
before Applejack can reach it, now finally looking her way. "My
guardian is off to the hereafter for eternity, and all my
employees are currently on task in other locations whilst my
abode has sustained irreparable damage and must be built again
from scratch." Brash swivels a hoof in the air as a gesture of
thought, working in her previous story, "Thus, I was to convene
with Apple Loom at this locale."
She then looks back at the spilled apples and puts a couple in
the basket to start, "No need to stop and talk, we can
multitask." She then continues to fill the basket.

Applejack's mind visibly churned to a screeching halt, now
tilting her head completely in the other direction with furrowed
brows as she attempts to digest the filly's words. She wasn't
expecting such... prolific language from somepony so young, and
she couldn't help but think that Twilight really was behind all
of this as some strange joke. After a few moments, the orange
mare shakes her head, pulling her hat back down over her
frazzled mane as she moves to help return the apples to their
       baskets.
"That's some... uh... colorful language there, uh... Brash. You
been takin' lessons from Twilight or somethin'?" Applejack
glances over, studying the gray filly with stern eyes. She was
attempting to find a connection between the two, still confident
of her friend's involvement. But the more the mare thought about
it, the more her gut feeling told her that Brash was just a
wayward filly who just happened to be in the wrong spot at the
wrong time. "My name is Applejack, co-owner and lead pony of
Sweet Apple Acres." She paused for a brief moment, gauging how
to approach the situation. "So... Your home is being rebuilt,
and you say that Applebloom told you to meet her here?" she
continues, moving on to the next basket. "Little sis has been
gone for about a week, I reckon. Still, somepony has to be
watchin' over ya, right? Mother? Father? Grandparents?..."
Applejack trails off, hoping to get some kind of lead on where
Brash is from. As far as Applebloom was concerned, she knew that
there was no way her little sister was involved... But she
wasn't going to push that question. Yet.

Brash rolls her eyes as Applejack expresses difficulty in
understanding her. "Allow me to reiterate... in simple words; My
father, and only guardian, is dead." She pauses, but shows no
physical sorrow after saying those words. "I need a place to
stay for the night while my home is rebuilt. The company I now
own is militant in nature and will be able to complete the
       construction by tomorrow."
Brash finishes putting the last couple of apples into the basket
she fell into, "I assume you have a spare room with the absence
of Apple Bloom?" She then clears her throat, "And apologies, I
haven't heard of this Twilight character but previous mention of
her leads me to believe she's a prominent figure here."

Applejack blinks again, her features going through a variety of
emotions before finally settling on a deep frown. The eye-roll
nearly got her started, already having been through that
particular phase once before with Applebloom that nearly caused
a world war. The mare stopped herself as Brash continued about
her deceased father, however, striking a bit too close to home,
as it were. With a sigh, Applejack moves to set down more
baskets around the tree behind her, lining up another kick
before striking the trunk with another resounding thud.
"Twilight Sparkle. You know... Princess of Friendship? Got a
castle as shiny as a greased up pig right smack-dab in the
middle of Ponyville. Hard to miss." The orange mare couldn't
honestly be upset with Brash at this point, despite her
peculiarities, but how does she not know about Twilight? She
just keeps arriving at more questions.
Another tree, another set of baskets, another thud. "We sure
indeed have an extra room," Applejack continues, examining yet
another tree. "How do ya know my little sis, anywho? She's
usually pretty vocal about all of her friends, but I don't
recall ever hearing about a Brash before."

"Yeah, I saw that on my flight over." Brash replies in regard to
the castle, but can't think of a good excuse for not hearing of
the princess that wouldn't include her history of never going
outside. She follows Applejack to every tree, trying to figure
out a way she can contribute to the work as she dislikes being
       idle.
As the question of Applebloom arises once again Brash thinks
quickly, "We met at school. I suppose we haven't talked too
much, I'm not the most social pony... but she was quick to
regard me as a friend and mentioned wanting to hang out more.
Though she may not remember, she seemed busy with her other
       friends at the time."
Brash begins to think over her recent statements and possible
       consequences of perpetuating her lie.
