Walk in the Park
By: Isabelline Snow Date: July 4, 2016, 10:13 am
---------------------------------------------------------
"As we walk along the shore,
To the moon we sing our song~"
Isabelline Snow sang quietly to herself as she trotted briskly
around the outskirts of Ponyville. The mare would look rather
goofy if anypony were to spot her- a solid, stark, silvery-white
Noctral swaying and bobbing like a filly to her own internal
rhythm. While Noctrals weren't all too uncommon to see around
Ponyville, especially at night, Isabelline just seemed a
little... out of place. Out of uniform, too, so it mustn't be
official business. What was she doing on the outskirts of town?
"Aye, da-da, aye, da,
Aye, da-da, aye, da,
To the moon we sing our song~"
While the mare's body-language promoted a sense of tom-foolery,
her sharp, golden eyes and the tightness of which she held her
large, leather wings to her body betrayed her true intentions.
Isabelline was looking for... something. Bright, luminous eyes
dart back and forth between building to building, alleyway to
alleyway. Ears swivel to and fro as they pick up the
reverberations of her song, perhaps searching for something that
shouldn't be. Wings locked and poised on a figurative spring,
ready to take off at a mere moments notice. Somepony... or
something... was making her skin crawl.
Isabelline seemed to relax some after another pass around the
town; the mysterious sense of foreboding fled just about as
quickly and abruptly as it came. With a soft, nearly exasperated
sigh, the mare began to move inwards towards the center of the
town. While Isabelline has gained many allies over her short
career, it would be almost impossible to tell just how many
weren't particularly... friendly. And the very last thing she
wanted to do was invite trouble into the town, or worse, her
youngest sister's home. In fact, that was the biggest reason for
her visit tonight- to see her little sister. And later, if her
sources are correct, a potential contract in the nearby area.
Even on her nights off, Isabelline's duties remain absolute for
her own group as well as that of the Lunar Guard. An admirable
trait, perhaps, although it left her with nary a moment to stop
and enjoy herself.
The Noctral paused in an open area, a park near Ponyville
Square, to collect her thoughts. There seemed to be a few ponies
out and about, trotting to and fro across the way, perhaps
running late night errands. Mothers toting sleepy-eyed fillies.
Stallions, some inebriated, some not, flirting with just about
everything that moves. Teenagers devising new and improved ways
to get themselves in a load of trouble... Isabelline took a seat
on a nearby bench to watch the various ponies as they went about
their night, taking solace in the fact that she wasn't being
followed and everything looked relatively normal.

Another night, another walk. Another noctral trotting throughout
the town still wearing his slightly torn jacket. Dry red stains
patch the coat, a result of its owner still not getting around
to clean it yet. Another cigar is clenched in his teeth as he
goes on, a third of it already burned off. He certainly gets his
fair share of stares as he walks up the small stairs as the
breeze flows through his hair. But at this point, there is no
point. The pointing rif raf run off as he rides on the slight
high of the evening sky and the stars above. It's whats down
below that troubles him so. Under wraps, his wound still burns.
Burning like the desire to the answer that he yearns. He presses
on, past the fountain, past the pain; until he ends up at the
park. Walking along, ignoring what's around him as his thoughts
take hold of him again.

Isabelline watches intently, almost peacefully as the various
ponies come and go... With a soft hum, the mare curls her
striped tail around her legs, shoulders hunched, and ears flat
as she practically melts into the bench. It really had been too
long since she had taken a break from all of the... organized
chaos... that was her life within the Guard. Perhaps she should
put in a request for a vacation. Isabelline giggles... That
would certainly be worth some laughs amongst her peers. Her duty
to the Guard was critical, and her work was never done. Perhaps
she could get one of her sisters to step in? Isabelline toys
with the thought, glancing up in thought. Her gaze was drawn to
a particular gray Noctral who was equally lost in thought, just
shuffling by as he lets his legs carry him across the park.
If the scars weren't a dead giveaway already, his jacket and
cigar definitely was. Of course, there was always the mark on
his flank as well.
Ebony...?
Isabelline's gaze follows his movements for a few moments, not
wanting to shake him out of seclusion. It wasn't too strange to
see another Noctral, sure, but Ebony? Top of the Lunar Guard
chain-of-command-as-in-her-boss-Ebony? Well, in that case...
The white mare sits up and emits a sharp, piercing whistle...
The one she used that could be heard clear across the Citadel to
silence a quarrel and bring everypony to attention. She knew
she'd be risking a swift boot to the head, but she'd buy him
lunch or something later.
"Ebony, my good friend, what brings you to, how you say... this
neck of woods? More charges running off with nary a word?"
(Slight Russian accent)

Ebony snaps or of his stupor when he hears the whistle. Looking
over, he instantly shows a calm smile as he sees the familiar
face. "Nah, I was chasing the charges yesterday. Tonight is
hopefully quieter and I can have just one evening of peace
before my vacation ends." The Captain trots over to her, still
slightly limping from the injury; due to the bandages underneath
his jacket, his armor still remains home. "It's good to see you
again Ms. Snow. How are you and the girls doing? It's been some
time since I've seen them too."

Isabelline tilts her head, those prying, golden eyes flicking
back and forth across Ebony's form as he approached with subtle
shifts in his gait. The mare smiles in return, offering the
empty spot beside her to rest for a moment, if Ebony was
willing.
"Such a hard worker, as of always, Sir Ebony," Isabelline
replies, matching the stallion's formality. Such proper
etiquette was hardly necessary between the two, but the Lunar
Guard's customary procedures were hard to break after so many
years of service. "Both are of faring quite well, I should say,"
the mare continued. "Ivory is taking a well deserved break.
Indigo, on the other hoof, is still out on assignment. Beasts
are restless, as of late... And with any luck, she will be
finding out why. How about you, Sir Ebony? Old scars giving you
some trouble, my friend?"

Ebony chuckles as he takes a seat next to her. "The old scars
are fine, a bit numerous if you ask me but it's the new ones
that are a pain to deal with." He takes another puff of his
cigar, exhaling the plume of smoke into the air as he gazes into
the night sky. "I'm glad to hear your sisters are ok. With
what's been going on nowadays in Equestria, signing up for the
guard is like signing off for a much shorter life expectancy."
He shakes his head, trying to shift away from the more somber
topics. "So what brings you to Ponyville? You can't be part of
the garrison I requested recently."

"I am... confident in their abilities." Isabelline paused,
sounding unsure herself after Ebony's deepened remark. He spoke
the truth, at least to a fashion, and while Isabelline was truly
confident in her sisters' abilities to uphold their duty, there
was always... that chance. A chance that something could go
horribly wrong. Isabelline herself has had a few, daring close
calls. Careful or not, she would end up looking like Ebony
before too long. The mare grins at the thought... Perhaps a few
scars would look good on her?
She shakes her head, leaning all the way back as she gazes
upwards at the dissipating smoke. "And what if I am?" Isabelline
teases, grinning again as she returns her attention to Ebony.
"No, my friend. I'm here to visit Ivory. And later, if my
sources are of accurate, investigating a possible contract for
the Crescent." She pauses again, wondering if she should
elaborate any further. Perhaps, with the state that Ebony was in
as well as a garrison call, it wouldn't hurt... "This one makes
a bit on of edge, Ebony," she continues, her ears now on a
swivel. "Contracts like these don't just pop up in places like
Ponyville. It is, how you say... strange."

"Strange, huh? Yea, strange seems to be somewhat of a common
occurrence these days." The captain himself keeps his ears on a
swivel as well, although his rotations seem more lax than his
companions. Still, such matters require care and scrutiny, and
he would be damned if he didn't treat matters as such. "I'll
take a look in-" He suddenly stops; he was doing it again,
trying to delve into work when he should be doing the opposite.
He takes a deep breath, another puff of his cigar, and relaxes.
"I trust you know the right choices to make Isabelline. Just, if
you or Crescent need anything, just let me know. Is there
anything I should know about this contract or better if I
don't?"

Isabelline hums softly, sitting up as she brushes her mane out
of her face and props a hoof under her chin in thought. She
knows that Ebony would do just about anything to help, despite
the numerous objections the other high-ranking officials often
made. The Crescent was both a boon and a curse; Isabelline has
the power to work freely within her own group, but was often
decried as a personal conflict of interest by the others. Ebony,
on the other hoof, had helped her group thrive in its
beginnings, and to that end, Isabelline would gladly divulge
information of her inner workings from time to time. Except...
There was nothing to really tell on this one.
"Well," she starts, her mind kicking into high gear again as she
replays recent events. "The problem, strangely enough, is that
there is not much of knowing about it. Class D. Contracts like
these are addressed to the group as a whole. This one, however,
requested me specifically by name. Written with riddles, perhaps
as a way to cover any tracks. A Zebra, perhaps, considering
location." Isabelline shakes her head again and sighs. "So... I
am of doing what I always do- conducting an investigation before
turning it over to the Crescent themselves."

"Good call." The Captain adds, "The last thing that's needed is
a dead end or a trap. My offer still stands though Isabelline. I
know Crescent takes on some pretty risky assignments, and I'll
be damned if I let you guys go out underequipped." He knows the
same concept applied to the Lunar Guard in general, but old
habits of worrying die hard.
