A New Beginning

With the sun high in the sky, Iron's personal shop was filled
with the sounds of his work, a constant rhythm of metal on metal
filling the air with it's ring. The rhythm eventually reached a
pause, shortly followed by a hiss and clouds of steam billowing
out of the open doors to his shop as Iron took a short break to
wipe off his brow and drink down some water to keep himself
hydrated. Taking this moment, he pulled out his notebook, double
checking his various notes and measurements, making sure things
were progressing as they should. Happy with his work, he set
back to his task, the metal ringing out once more.

Ryo sighed, crumbling another piece of paper and throwing it
away. She was doing her best, to write as good of a flyer as she
could, to post on the Canterlot's "Looking for work" board. She
mumbled to herself, as she tried to word her application in the
best way possible. "Hi. My name is... No, i can't start it like
that... Hi there, i- No, not good..." The blue mare quickly
found herself having ripped and disposed her entire pile of
papers she had prepared, the trash bin next to her full of
crumbled paper balls. Ryo groaned and threw the pen she was
holding in her magic across the room, the poor writing tool
hitting the wall and getting it's tip broken. Ryo leaned her
head on the table, an audible *Thunk* coming from the contact of
her head with the table. But then, a sudden idea struck her.
Jumping up from her chair, Ryo began to collect few supplies
into her saddlebags. "Of course. I just go over there, and see
how other ponies word their applications. It's bound to be an
idea bank!" Ryo thought to herself, before storming out, and
onto the streets of Canterlot
Another thought struck Ryo, once she had spend a couple of
hours, looking for the place. She never actually asked, where it
was. Admittedly, she had not thought this through at all. The
happy spring in her trot had slowly died down, the trot having
turned into slow walking. She was in a part of Canterlot she had
never been in before, and began to look at the buildings around
her. There were shops, restaurants, offices, and much more. Ryo
stopped by one window, looking inside the shop, that seemed to
have something to do with jewels and gemstones. Wondering if she
should just start going in and asking for jobs, Ryo suddenly
spotted a small group of guards coming her way. Being the only
pony out at the street, Ryo didn't want to get into a chat of
any kind, and quickly hurried along, turning away from the
street she was on, and took a sharp right onto another street.
Defeated, Ryo walked down the new street, not paying attention
to the stores around her anymore. Not before she heard, what she
could swear was somepony hammering metal. Her gaze lifting up
from the street, Ryo quickly spotted the source for the sound. A
forge. Ryo didn't know there was a forge here. She quickly
hurried over to the front window, looking at the things in
display there. Dreaming that she could find a job at a forge
again, she was ready to move on, before her eyes spotted a flyer
on the window. It seemed old, a little burned even, but it was
there. Ryo read it out loud with silent voice "Apprentice
wanted... Got a keen eye... *mumble* Metal...*mumble*..." The
text was hard to make out, but the message was clear. Ryo's eyes
beamed, as she read the flyer again, feeling like she should
pinch herself, just in case she was dreaming. Determined, Ryo
trotted over to the entrance, pushed the door open, and trotted
inside. She walked over to the counter, her eyes already
spotting multiple more items on display around walls, shelves
and display cases. Ryo stared at them in awe, her mind already
fantasizing about one day making similar things herself.

The sound of a new arrival caused Iron to perk up before calling
out, "I'll be with you in a moment!" letting them know that he
was there whilst he finished what he was doing. Carefully, he
set his work aside, the tools in their places and the metal
plate into the forge once more, though he took care to no put it
in too deeply, just enough to retain the heat for a while. It
always paid to take care when working with hot metals and
flames. One forge fire is enough to teach a good lesson. Once he
was happy that things wouldn't get broken or damaged whilst he
stepped aside, he grabbed his notebook and a piece of charcoal,
heading to see his latest customer.
Stepping out, he beamed a big smile, "welcome to my forge," he
began, looking over the blue mare before him, noting the lack of
a cutie mark, but thinking nothing of it, "my name is Ironfire,
how may I help you this fine day?" he finished, flipping his
notebook open to the first blank page he had, ready to take down
any notes and sketches that he so often did whilst working.

Ryo turned to look at the direction of the sound, hearing
somepony call out. She began to nervously rub her hooves
together, returning to look at display items. What if the spot
was filled already? What if she wasn't qualified enough? What
if...? Ryo pondered in her mind, zoning out enough to jump a
little when Iron finally walked to the counter. Ryo turned to
Iron, smiled back nervously. Her earlier determination seemed to
have dwindled, and and gotten replaced with nervousness.
"Uhm..." Ryo started strongly. She did her best to calm herself.
She was talking to Ironfire, the owner of the place, so maybe
the spot was still open. "I was... Uhm... Wondering if..."
Before she would panic, Ryo floated the flyer from the window
over, and set it on the counter. "I was wondering... If this
spot is still open..." Yes! Ryo cheered in her mind, before she
realized she didn't introduce herself. Blushing a little, she
quickly added "I-i'm Ryo... Nice to meet you Mister Ironfire..."

The nervousness of the mare seemed out of place, making him
wonder if she was always like this whilst shopping. He began to
wonder if he should try and help her, perhaps ease her evident
concerns. That was, right up until the old and worn flyer was
pulled from the window, making him look surprised, "oh wow...
kept meaning to do something about that..." he muttered, having
put it up a long while ago and forgotten about it when it didn't
attract any attention. That was, until now, "so you want to be a
blacksmith?" he asked, setting aside his notebook and charcoal
pencil, "tell me Ryo, you ever worked in a forge before? Or with
metal and gems?" he continued, figuring to get the basics out of
the way before he gave her a proper test.

Ryo looked back and forth between the flyer and Iron, now
fearing that the position indeed wasn't open anymore. That fear
was quickly dismissed though. "I- Y-yeah i do" Ryo said, nodding
eagerly, the initial nervousness clearly easing on the mare. Ryo
listened Iron's question, seeming to ponder for a moment before
replying "I have... T-though it wasn't as big as your forge is.
A-and i have practiced with metals and gemstones too... I used
to do things at a friend's forge, Nothing p-professional
though..." Wait, maybe she shouldn't have said that "B-but they
had to sell the forge away" Ryo slowly found more and more
faults in her 'Professional' image. She should have brought
something to show, that she had made, but unfortunately, she had
nothing with her.

As she went on, Iron nodded along, listening. That she'd worked
in a forge before was a great help, he was visibly pleased at
that. Would mean he could skip some of the early basics and
could assess her skills that much more. He was a little
interested in who her friend might have been, not aware of any
forges having had to close their doors, but he ignored that for
the moment, "very well, miss Ryo," he began, "if you're going to
work under me, I'd like to get an idea of your level of skill,"
he informed her, "this way," he then invited, moving back into
his work area and waving her to follow, "don't be nervous,
though I imagine that's probably a little tricky," he added with
a chuckle, "however, I find one of the best ways to assess
somepony is this," he pulled out a dagger he'd made, pretty old
now, a simple piece, "make a dagger. It's a simple thing, most
smiths know how to make one, but there's a lot of thought that
goes into it,"

It looked like Ryo had managed to make a positive impression.
Ryo cheered in her mind. This was going well. She nodded to
Iron, following the stallion to the work area of the forge. As
much as she wanted to seem confident, she couldn't deny that she
was very nervous. She nodded again, happy that her nervousness
was addressed. Ryo was struck with another feeling of awe, as
they stepped into the work area, the heart of the forge. She
looked around, at all the tools and equipment, just sitting
there, waiting to assist a smith to create what they wanted to
create. Ryo looked back at Iron when he spoke again, Ryo's eyes
now locked at the dagger shown to her. She nodded slowly, before
picking the dagger up, turning it around and looking for any
fine details. "D-do i need to copy this?" Ryo asked, setting the
dagger down "I-is there a time limit?"

As she took the dagger, he released it himself, allowing her to
look it all over. He expected her to ask questions, so it was no
surprise when she did, "copy it, not necessary," he began, "I
just want a dagger," after all, making an identical copy
wouldn't show her own talents for design or creativity, things
which were important as there was no plans for any of his
pieces. He designed things on the spot to meet clients needs,
and she'd need to be able to do the same if she hoped to work
for him, "as for the time, no, there's no limit... other than
the day, I suppose," he chuckled, "though that's still a few
good hours for you," he wagered, taking a glance outside at the
shadows, "I imagine your nerves are more than enough of a
handicap. Not to mention the unfamiliar environment,"

Ryo kept nodding, listening to the rules set for the task.
Though the rules were rather lenient, she wasn't gonna screw
around one bit. Ryo stared at the dagger for a bit longer,
before she set it down, and said "Okay... I-i think i can do
this..." Clearly nervous, even more so than before. Ryo did her
best to think of what she'd need, before asking few more
questions. "Okay... Okay... Uhm... Where can i find materials?
I-i'm also gonna need a hammer... And..." Ryo listed few more
tools, before she ended her string of questions by saying
"L-lastly, i-i'm gonna need goggles..." Ryo tied her mane a bit,
glad that she at least had brought something herself.
