Starting Up in Smoke

On the outskirts of Ponyville there lies a mansion, two-stories
tall and isolated far enough from other buildings that one of
the more introverted residents could safely say they have no
neighbors. The top floor sports a fresh coat of paint with
bronze-plated letters above the windows which read "Gizmo
Deliveries". The bottom floor looked abandoned in comparison
with paint peeling off the walls and windows blocked out by
dust.
At this moment the house itself began to expel a thick black
smoke from every opening, which prompted the orange pegasus,
Carri Air, to throw open her window, gasp for air, and climb out
so fast she forgets to fly and falls to the ground with a thud.
Another filly, this one gray and unaffected by the smoke,
casually trots out the front door to find Carri recovering and
getting on her hooves. Starting with a heavy sigh, "I suppose I
was wrong to try and cut corners running a forge for the first
time."
Carri looks up to the smoke now reaching high into the sky in
shock, "Is the house going to burn down!?"
Brash reveals a deck of playing cards in her hoof, "No, the fire
is contained it just has to burn all the stuff I stuck in the
forge. The worst that's going to happen is concerned ponies
stopping by." Brash takes a seat and sets up a standard
solitaire game in front of herself.
Carri was expecting a game they could both play, but found
herself content to sit down and watch Brash.

The smoke from the mansion could be seen from the outskirts of
the Ponyville CBD, with ponies stopping to see the billowing
smoke rising into the sky like an emergency beacon. Curious, a
few ponies began to make their way to the source of the smoke,
with Octavia being one of them. She was on her way to her room
at the local inn when she heard the commotion and saw the smoke.
Not having enough time to put her cello away, she decided to
take it with her in its case anyway. Instead of going on the
main path with the others, she took a short cut, eventually
leading to the smoke. When she saw the house where all the smoke
was emanating from, she broke into a gallop towards the house.
'Oh no, what if there's some pony in there, I have to go and
help!' She thinks to herself as she makes her way to the
mansion. Upon arrival she hastily drops her cello behind a
nearby bush so it would not be taken. Before she can barge into
the smoking house, she spots two fillies... casually playing
Solitaire? Alright, definitely one of the weirder things that
she's seen. "Are you two alright? Is there anyone else inside?"
She asks frantically.

The frantic question makes Brash lose focus and she places a
card incorrectly, whilst she could correct the mistake she
instead thrusts her fore-hooves through the assortment of cards,
creating a big mess. "Carri, get rid of the rabble." Brash
demands as she stands and faces Octavia.
"Got it." Carri replies then stands in front of Brash to address
Octavia, "Miss, there is nothing to-"
Brash shoves Carri aside causing her to stumble a few feet away,
"That rabble!" Brash gestures to the gathering crowd.
Carri, having not previously noticed this crowd, looks around in
momentary awe before nodding, "Uh, right." She sets off to
inform the crowd that there's nothing wrong.
"As for you," Brash starts at Octavia, pointing a hoof at the
smoking mansion, "I'm new here, so I'm willing to patiently
advise you that whatever goes on at this estate is none of your
concern. I can perfectly handle any situation by myself and do
not require assistance from the likes of you." She puts her hoof
down as her gaze fades into a glare.

Octavia is taken aback by the black filly and her rude response.
"Oh really? You can 'handle' the situation? Because right now,
all I'm seeing is some rude little filly sitting on her flank
playing a game of solitaire, while your house is burning to the
ground. So if you really can 'handle' the situation, then
actually do something to help the problem instead of running
your mouth." she says, with such venom. This rude little filly
needed to be put in her place. Looking back, she sees many older
ponies pushing past the orange filly and making their way to the
house. "Where are your parents? Are they inside?" she asks
calmly, calming herself down after before.

Brash glances over to Carri, seeing that whilst failing to do
her job she's still trying her best to assure everypony that
everything is under control. "Me and my father's lackluster
employee over there are the only occupants of this residence."
She takes a deep breath before speaking loud enough that the
surrounding ponies can hear, "As you can see there are no
visible flames, my house is not burning down, nopony is in
danger. Please do not under any circumstances go inside and risk
inhalation of the smoke!"
Brash grumbles at the thought of the older ponies not listening
to her before looking back to Octavia, "Any more questions or
unproductive demands?"

Octavia looks back at the crowd, seemingly stopping in their
place looking at the smoking building. Some of them muttering
under their breath "This filly doesn't know what she's talking
about.""The house is burning down, can't she see the smoke?".
Octavia looks back at the black filly with a slight smirk on her
face. "As long as there is smoke coming out of that building,
you're not going to convince them that everything is fine.
They're still going to think your house is burning down. So
unless you actually do something about it instead of trying to
get rid of everyone, no one's going anywhere." she says, taking
a pause before continuing. "As for questions and 'demands', I'd
like you to stop acting as rude as you are now, unless that's
too hard?" she says.

"It is a tall order." Brash remarks. "As for the smoke, I don't
have a breathing filter so I can't safely head into the
basement. I could attempt to reroute it to the chimney, make it
look okay, but that would take longer than the forge will be
burning anyway."
Brash sits down, "So unless you have any good ideas I think I'll
just keep everypony out of my house... physically if I have to."

Octavia thinks long and hard on the current situation. She knew
full well that this filly didn't want anyone around, and like
she said, the only way to get everypony to leave is if the smoke
disappears. "All we need is for the situation to look normal in
some way. Whether that be rerouting the smoke or getting rid of
it completely, as long as there isn't some massive amounts of
smoke, everything will appear to be fine." she says. She then
notices the open window, "Well, at least there's some kind of
vent for the smoke." she says. Thinking back on the current
situation, she tries to think of possible ways to solve the
issue. "I'm not expert in magic, but surely there has to be a
unicorn who can simply use their magic to remove the smoke
right?" she says to herself, but loud enough so that ponies
within the near vicinity could hear her.

"No." Brash states flatly, "A spell like that would take a
significant amount of skill, it'd be easier to get a team of
pegasi to disperse it but... that vent idea got me thinking."
Brash takes a look around and finds Carri, whom is still
struggling to calm the masses. "Carri, new objective!"
Carri's ears perk up and she darts over to Brash, "Are you sure
the house isn't burning down?"
Brash sighs, "Just get a big rock, like big enough to put a hole
in the house."
Carri thinks for a moment, "What are we gonna use it for?"
"Nothing, I just want to admire it."
Blind to Brash's sarcasm Carri nods, "You got it!" She takes off
in search of a large rock.
Brash looks back to Octavia, "So if there's a hole in the roof
near the chimney and all the windows are shut, the smoke should
go that way and everything will look normal to the rabble and
I'll just spend the next hour or two outside." Brash explains,
having no doubt about her new plan.

"Clearly you aren't aware of Ponyville's resident magic user and
princess, Princess Twilight Sparkle." she says snarkily. She
contemplates on the idea of getting somepony to go get her, but
it'd be too much of a hassle for everypony. "In terms of your
new plan, it'll definitely look normal to anyone at a distance,
but the ponies here are definitely going to see what you're
doing, which of course is just going to cause more worry among
those here." she pauses before continuing. "But its your house,
and I'm quite sure you know how to handle the 'situation' so
I'll leave you two to it. But don't be surprised if ponies here
are still going to stay." she says sarcastically, standing her
ground and watching what will happen next.
