The Proposal Under the Moon
By: Ebony Coldsteel Date: March 20, 2019, 8:31 pm
---------------------------------------------------------
Ebony paces back and forth on along the balcony of the castle.
The night was clear and the sky was full of stars. The crescent
moon paints a picture of serenity and calmness, something the
Colonel wasn’t so full of. Despite all the work, all the danger,
all the monsters that he’s fought with, none compares to the
biggest challenge he’s faced. His love, his Avery. The mare that
he’s known for a short, but long period of time, makes his heart
flutter. Now though, fluttering with anxiety. His blue eyes look
over his uniform. Medals and ribbons adorn his chest, but it’s
the metal in his pocket is what he’s focusing on. For now, he
just has to talk to her. Ease into the conversation, then start
with his plan. One of his guards has sent a parcel to his love
earlier to meet him here at this time. For now, he just has to
wait.
Once she had received the notice to meet Ebony, the first thing
she did was take off to see him. It was a beautiful night, the
stars and moon shined brightly in the sky. Her light pink lace
dress fluttered as she flew towards the tall balcony. As she
flew, she wondered what the summoning was for. No matter,
whatever it was it involved the love of her life.
Avery made it to the balcony after a short amount of time, her
freckled face lit up with glee when her eyes met with his.
“Ebony…” She trotted up to him and gave her handsome partner a
kiss. When she pulled away she noticed the anxious look in his
eyes and the pace that he was doing before she landed. “Are you
alright?” Avery tilted her head with concern, but followed it up
with a slight smile.
As soon as Ebony looks over to her, a warm smile emerges. Her
eyes, enhanced by her glasses only shine brighter under the pale
moon’s light. “I’m fine, especially with you here.” The noctral
looks off into the landscape, “I’m glad you’ve been able to join
me tonight. I figured we can enjoy a casual evening around town?
Work has been piling on and I need an evening to get away from
it all.”
Avery’s ears perked up as she smiled, “Of course Ebby! Let’s
have fun and relax.” The mare pats him gently on the back while
giving him a light kiss.
It’s only been a few minutes and her heart was warm and full of
joy. “Let's go!” Avery held her wing out and wrapped it around
his.
Her touch sets his heart to beat faster. For now, he has to
focus on the task at hand. Parting his wings, he looks over to
his companion, “Care for a quick glide? I’d like to take you to
another section of the castle. We could walk… but I haven’t had
the warm air under my wings yet.”
“I’d like that!” Avery smiles as she extends her lilac wings
out. Of course she loved spending time with Ebony, but there was
this sort of magical feeling she got whenever they flew
together. Once in the air, her hoof adjusted her glasses closer
to her face. “It’s so lovely out tonight!” Avery exclaimed
before spinning a bit for fun.
As much as Ebony wanted to perform some deft maneuvers, the
decorations on his chest keeps him to conservative motions.
Allowing her to take more daring flights, he guided her around
the stone citadel to the other side. Landing on an open
platform, the two find themselves in front of a long hallway
leading to the Royal Archives. “Follow me, I have something I
want to show you.” The Colonel begins a slow trot, nodding to
the officers who salute them as they walk past.
Avery keeps a smile as she trots down the long hallway with
Ebony. It didn’t matter if it was the first or hundredth time
she’s seen Ebony receive salutes, she still wasn’t used to being
with such an important stallion. But to her, Ebony wasn’t the
‘Colonel’ or ‘That really intimidating batpony’, he was just her
Ebby.
As they made their way through, Avery waved at a couple of
familiar guards. She was here a lot, and the guards enjoyed her
presence. Though it might just be because she slips them
homemade treats often…
Once her mind finishes wandering, Avery brings her attention
back to Ebony. “The anticipation is killing me Ebony.” The
pegasus giggles and sticks her tongue out at the noctral.
Coldsteel grins even more at his companion’s laughter, it always
lifted him up when he needed it. It wouldn’t take long before
they reached the archives and were met with towering book cases
filled with thousands of texts, scripts, maps, books, and any
other sort of written work Equestria has to offer. Although not
a bookworm himself, Ebony took solace among the halls here
whenever he needed an escape from the mundane work and tedium
his occupation pressed him with. “We’re going to be heading to a
very special part of the archives. A section I myself wasn’t
given access to until my recent promotion. In it lies something
magical I wish to share with you.”
Avery’s ears perked up at the mention of a ‘special part of the
archives’. “Whoa really?!” Maybe there were more books! Of
course there would be… Ever since she started dating Ebony she’s
spent a lot of time in the Royal Archives, it wasn’t as if she
didn’t enjoy the Ponyville Library; but there was a vast amount
of special knowledge here that wasn’t obtainable in Ponyville.
“I can’t wait to see it!” Avery’s voice was filled with
excitement and franky she did squeal a little bit. Her eagerness
was distracting her from the fact that Ebony was nervous a mere
ten minutes ago, maybe he still was… but she sure didn’t notice
at this point.
Step by step they venture to the halls less traveled. The only
presence was a guard at every intersection. It wasn’t long
before they rounded to a small chamber, secluded from prying
eyes and stray ears. Closing the door behind them, he turns to
find a bench, a table adorned with various romantic items.
Candles burning, rose petals, and a small container of
chocolate. But what was at the center was the main attraction. A
single book. Bound in blue letters, it was etched with gold
lettering of an unknown origin. Ebony steps forward and offers
her a seat. What a surprise it will be.
Once Avery’s eyes set glance at the romantic surroundings, she
tears up a bit. “Aww, Ebby this is so wonderful!” Avery takes a
seat and gazes at the book in the middle of the table, she knows
many books but this doesn’t look familiar in the slightest… As
tempting as it was just to reach out and look at it, she doesn’t
as Ebony probably wants to do so.
It was quiet and romantic, just her and the love of her life.
Ebony always was kind and patient with her, and there was
nowhere she’d rather be right now. “So…” Avery leans forward
with a smile on her face, “This is quite the surprise.”
“It gets better,” Ebony sits next to her and opens the book. Its
pages are written in a distanly familiar script. Old ponish
actually, words and phrases are recognizable, but without proper
study, the average pony wouldn’t be able to make much of it.
“This was written by an enchanter at a very interesting time.”
Flipping through the next few pages, the letters slowly start to
glow. “I’ll let the book speak for itself.” The pages fly faster
and faster; soon the room around them starts to dissolve.
Moments later, the two find themselves out on one of the castle
balconies overlooking Canterlot. It’s different though, the
buildings, guards, everything is much more historical. “Welcome
Avery to Canterlot, 600 years ago.” The night sky is clear as
the citizens flood the streets, most looking up as if waiting
for something. “What we’re looking at is spell that he used to
record this phenomenal event. You see, tonight is the only night
in history we’ll ever get to see this.”
Avery stared intently at the flipping pages, her mouth agape in
awe. Was… was this a dream?
Once the old world appeared around them her eyes lit up as
bright as the stars. “W-Whoa…” This wasn’t a dream, it was real.
Well, sort of. “Ebony… This is spectacular. You… did this for
me?” Her voice cracked a little bit, she wasn’t sure anything
could top the view from the moon she saw before, but this was
amazing!
“Of course, Avery,” Ebony answers, not able to hide his own
amazement at the sight before them. He had only seen this one
before, and that was just to see if this book would even work at
all. “My love for you would certainly take me to the ends of the
earth to see you smile…” Ebony chuckles, “Plus I wanted to see
this myself so it’s a win win regardless. Tonight is known as
the shower of a million stars.” Before he can continue, the
crowds hush as the meteor shower begins. At first, there’s only
a few; but in a matter of minutes, hundreds soar across the sky
all at once. It’s certainly a beauty to behold. The Colonel
himself is caught in awe at the display, but he looks to his
love one more time.
Avery’s jaw drops at the sight of it all. Hundreds of stars
cascade over the night sky like a waterfall. It’s beautiful! The
cheers below in the town give a comforting feeling of life and
love. “Ebby, I-” the mare gasps in surprise at what she saw.
Ebony had kneeled down, a box balanced delicately in his hoof. A
silver bracelet adorned with Onyx and opals sits right at the
center.
“Avery Prose,” Ebony softly confesses, “you have only been in my
life for short amount of time. But that small fraction of my
life has been the best I’ve ever experienced. I want more of
that. I want you to be by my side, Avery… I love you. So, will
you marry me?”
Avery tears up so much she has to remove her glasses. She
struggles to hold back the wave of emotion that engulfs her. A
smile appears of her face as she nods, “Yes! Yes I will!” Not
even waiting for his reply, she pounces the noctral in a tight
enough grip the Colonel actually had trouble breathing. Pulling
back, she catches her breath and pulls up her hoof. Ebony’s
wings reach over and scoop up the bracelet. In a fluid motion,
he slips the bracelet on.
