PLO waves off Spirit's spirited compassion with a grunt and a
smile that looks like it grew up on the wrong side of the
tracks. "You did your best, I'm sure," he tosses back, sounding
maybe a bit biting. It probably isn't her fault, but it sure
seems like it's somepony's fault! "Worry not for me, sir, miss
Alacrity," he replies to the inquiry of the robed one and the
much less concerned chemist. He picks out a set of vials and
shovels out what seems to be an appropriate amount of bits for
it out of his purse, proportional to the pain he feels - so
maaaaybe a few more than is strictly necessary for the bottle -
and plunks them down on the counter.
"There has not been made a staircase yet that can so easily
conquer me." It's a statement that could easily be taken for a
joke, but his tone of voice suggests it to be otherwise. He
unstoppers a pair of doses and downs the contents. The rest he
stows away somewhere with his purse. "Many thanks to you," he
says, still sounding grumpy but slightly less so as he uses a
hoof to push the lump back into his head.

Immediately after the bits hit the counter Alacrity pushed half
of them back to stallion's side and then counted out the
appropriate amount needed to pay for his items.
"Well that's good," Mana guessed as Alacrity tossed a couple
more coins back as change and had the transaction settled
quickly, "I'm on the second floor so I'll come to you if I need
any tips for getting up there."
"No," Alacrity answered Glory about the weather, her sighing as
if giving herself bad news, "Well, yes to the mints thing and no
to the weather thing. From what I hear they haven't repaired the
factory yet in Cloudsdale and reports are constantly
contradicting each other over when it will get fixed. I've heard
everything from tomorrow to next season. Most around here don't
mind since it hasn't been hurting the fields but I got sick of
it pretty quick."
"It definitely won't be tomorrow, I can tell you that," Mana
chimed in with a shake of his head, "the damage was spread over
half the facility and shut things down pretty hard. Crews were
scrambled as soon as possible since it's pretty important to the
government to keep the weather on lock but it takes more than a
couple days to fix a toppled cloud stack that crushed a good
chunk of their equipment and set their coils to go nuts."
"Huh. I guess... that's more than I've heard from anyone else,"
Alacrity commented over the information few if any in her town
had gotten, "where'd you hear this?"
"Eh, well, you know, I'm, uh, in security and stuff, remember?
This kind of stuff gets around in my line of business since it
can make people nervous and the weather can cause tempers to be
short. I wasn't there myself to assess the damage of course,"
Mana pointed to his horn and in so doing his obvious lack in
ability to stand on clouds, "but the source I heard this from is
pretty trustworthy and I have a friend who used to work in the
factory. He said, with that kind of damage, it will take at
least four or five more days before they start risking
production and probably a couple more till we start seeing
changes in the sky. Unless things start getting rushed but
they'd need to get a lot of stuff waived by the Crown to do that
since it would be side stepping some safety regulations and
warrant some high hazard pay. Of course, if things went as
they're supposed to we wouldn't be seeing a cloud in months at
the least so I'm pretty okay with toughing it out for another
week."
Mana blinked and felt like he'd started to ramble a little. how
long had he been in here anyway? It would probably be a good
idea to check in on Thunder and make sure he hadn't driven
Foxtrot insane in his absence.
"Anyway," he said, checking to make sure he hadn't forgotten
anything, "I'd better go unpack and settle in for the Festival.
It was a pleasure speaking with you, I'm sure I'll be seeing you
around the next couple days or so and, um..." he pushed the mint
on the counter over towards the recently stumbling stallion
nursing his bump, "you can go ahead and have this mint, I'm not
in the mood for it right now." Mana then gave each pony a nod
and headed for his room.
---
Mana Burn would successfully traverse the stairs leading to the
second level with little trouble. He wondered only briefly if he
should be proud of himself but would let it drop soon before
reaching the doors leading to his and his current companions
rooms. Noticing that one of the doors was cracked open he would
give it a look as he passed to check and see if anyone was
swinging from any lamps but was surprised to see Thunder
standing still. The sound of Mana passing apparently caught
Thunder's attention as well as the pegasus turned back in time
to catch Mana's eye and wave for him to join them in the room.
Entering, Mana, quickly noticed the stranger in the room and
then looked around with a sigh.
"This doesn't look like an office," he observed, "but it didn't
take long did it, Thunder? We can pay for whatever he broke I
promise."
"Haha," Thunder laughed with heavy sarcasm as he took the letter
given to him earlier back out from his bag, "You think just one
person could have kept me here long enough to be picked up? No,
it turns out we have a buddy for our biz-casual vacay. Glimmer
Glob thought we'd need help I guess."
It was very easy to tell that Mana was confused by this as he
gave the letter and Thunder both a skeptical squint. Taking the
paper he'd give it a read as Thunder went on to say something
about babysitters and how he would go to bed whenever he wanted
regardless of what the new pony said. The first read didn't take
Mana long but the second didn't ease his expression any better.
His eyes went from the paper to the new pony as if analyzing
both until he eventually folded it and kept it for himself.
"Every little bit helps, I suppose," he sighed, "the larger the
group the bigger the footprint but orders are orders. At least
this way we can divide into pairs if necessary and cover more
ground. Have we gotten him up to speed?"
"Sorta, but that speed would be turtle slow. I didn't really
have anything to tell him aside from the obvious. But we did get
introductions out of the way. New guy's Broadshield.
Broadshield, this is Mayonnaise. You will only refer to him as
Mayo."
"Mana Burn, actually."
"He pronounces it weird. Broadshield was about to enlighten us
on what he's found so far but then you interrupted us, Mayo."
"You waved me in here, Thunder."
"Yeah bu-"
"Foxtrot," Mana ignored his partner and shifted focus, "while
Thunder and Broadshield catch up on what they know I'd like to
follow up with you on something we discussed on the train, if
you don't mind. About stashing equipment and keeping supplies
available during our stay? I've been studying the map we got at
the station and I saw some spots in the lobby I'd like to point
out. I also wanted to get your thoughts on how well this inn
could serve as a shelter for some of the civilians in case
things go bad."
Mana was confident that Foxtrot would get the hint.

"Of course, Mana." Foxtrot replies as he starts trotting down
the hall. "In fact, I've been keeping an eye for for such places
that could best be used to keep civvies out of harms way. But
first, show me what you had in mind." Once both are far enough
from the others, the stallion looks over to his fellow officer,
his tone more hushed. "I hope we haven't run into any
complications."

Nivalia makes sure everything is packed away before returning to
Tinder's side. She gives her another cooling embrace as she
answers, "Nah, he's still with his buddies from what I saw. I
was thinking we go get that ice cream instead." Letting go
again, the mares horn glows before vanishing. A pair of sizable
wings spring from her sides as a replacement. Still standing a
head and a half taller than her friend, her single wing could
cover most of her body. "I'll be your mobile shade in the
meantime."

"Ice cream sounds like a good idea right now." Tinder puts a
couple more things in her bag before turning to face Niv, "You
didn't have to do that! But, I'm not gonna complain, having some
shade will be a good idea. Maybe my magic will even start
working again if I can get cool enough!"

"Well that depends," Mana said once he was confident they were
well out of ear shot, "I can't say no and we might not be
staying here for long if it seems too much a risk. Do you know
this Broadshield guy at all? Any past experience or knowledge? I
don't and I have strong reason to think that its more than a
little odd to have him waiting for us without us having been
told anything about it before we came here."

"Broadshield?" Foxtrot nods, "Yea, I know him. He's my
commanding officer. He also helped me with some uh...
difficulties I had with my previous employer. I'm not sure why
he would be called here, but he seems pretty surprised I showed
up as well. Maybe whoever is calling the shots planned to have
different parties meet without them knowing? Regardless, he's
somepony I'll vouch for to help us, though it wouldn't hurt to
get things clarified before moving forward."

Whether or not Mana was satisfied by the answer was not
immediately clear as he only gave a short sigh after Foxtrot had
finished speaking.
"If you'll vouch for him then I guess that will have to be
enough for now. I am however going to let you in on something to
make sure we're on the same page and that you aren't caught with
your guard down." Mana presented the letter and angled it so
Foxtrot could see. "This letter wasn't sent by Gleam," He
directed attention to the name at the bottom, "this signature
was forged. It's extremely close, I may not have even caught it
if it weren't for the tone of the letter itself, but there's no
doubt in my mind that this wasn't penned by him. Gleam
personally signs anything that carries his name and never has
anyone take dictation so it couldn't have been written on his
behalf either.
"I don't know which of us is getting played but I know now that
something is up. The rooms, this letter and the unexpected help.
Either someones meddling with what we're doing in favor of their
own interests or the people we're looking for know we're here
and are trying to screw with us. You seem to really trust this
guy, so I'm going to let you decide on how we proceed with this.
My recommendation is that we play it like we didn't notice
anything up until we're sure that he doesn't know it was faked.
Maybe we might even continue to receive letters or instructions
by whoever wrote this and can piece together what's going on.
"If you decide to ask him directly I'll go along with it, but I
ask that you let me know so that I can start watching our backs.
Otherwise I'll let Thunder know what's up and to be careful.
Regardless of what you decide I'm going to hold onto this letter
and try to analyze the handwriting to see if I recognize it at
all. It's a long shot but I might catch something somwhere."

Broadshield is about to start speaking when another pony, Mana
Burn, enters. "Pleasure to meet you." he says, before Mana Burn
has to leave with Foxtrot in tow. He can tell by the way they
talk that they need to discuss more private matters but as to
what he has no clue. He hasn't been here long enough or gotten
all the information needed to figure it out. "Pretty sloppy of
this Gleam pony to not exactly give us much to go off in regards
to searching for anything besides animals." he mutters. Moving
further into the room he says "I've only been here for a couple
of days, and I didn't know what I was doing here exactly until
just now, so I wouldn't have seen anything too suspicious.
Besides, the place is busy with this festival, and it would be
hard for a pony like myself to keep track of everything." he
says.

“Uh... well, if he knew what we were supposed to look for or who
was really responsible for this stuff he wouldn’t have needed to
ask us to come looking for clues.” Thunder replied to the
comment on Gleam’s organizing, hoping the room wasn’t bugged and
that he wouldn’t get dragged into Gleam’s office like he was
back in grade school, “Or maybe this is all just a big prank and
he’s watching us on cameras he set up through out the town.
Details are scarce on what’s ACTUALLY going on,” he gave the
decorative plant near the window a suspicious squint, “even for
those with first hand accounts and the others who’ve been
actually studying the junk they’ve been giving us to read have
been having a hard time figuring anything out. Like I said, Mana
has a better understanding of the magic gobbledygook they told
us about, I can’t wrap my head around that unicorn hocus pocus
so I’d get with him when he gets back.
“Weird though that they wouldn’t mention anything to you
beforehand. Seems like a waste of an opportunity to scout the
place or something. Maybe they didn’t think you’d get here so
much sooner than we did? Whatever, what’s important now is the
fact that we’re free to enjoy the festival, yeah? I’m sure
they’ve got a ton of little lemonade stalls and stuff all over
the place right now and I bet several can make them special just
for the grown ups if you know what I’m sayin’.”
