Returning Home

The ding of the coffee machine chimes off in the kitchen as
Ebony trots over to it. Mug in hoof, he pours himself a glass
and takes a sip. Delicious. Breakfast was filling, and the day
was just ahead. The noctral stretches and heads to the living
room. Coldsteel was excited for the day ahead. A trip out of
town to see some old faces.

Avery sat in the corner of Ebony's sofa, reading her book. The
mare was engrossed in the novel, every moment or so she'd take a
second to sip at her tea. Her hind legs swayed idly back and
forth, they were covered with pink and white polka dotted socks.
Once the coffee machine chimes, Avery perks up her head looking
at the clock. "Oh! Jeez, time really does fly huh?" She places
her book onto the coffee table before springing up, stretching
her wings. "I'm going to get dressed Ebby, I gotta make a good
first impression!" Before the noctral could respond she quickly
trots to the bedroom, taking out the dress she planned on
wearing for the semi special occasion.
Avery was nervous, completely and utterly nervous. She had tons
of dresses but none were good enough, though she settled on a
light grey wrap dress with a light blue trim.
After changing and making sure her hair looked okay she returned
back to the living room. "Okay." Avery took a deep breath before
shimmying a bit, "How do I look?"

Placing his cup on the table, Ebony trots to his chair. His
uniform was already laid out. Now he just had to put it on. Once
it is, Coldsteel looks over to Avery, a smile appearing on his
face. "You look wonderful, Avery. As you do in anything you
wear." After half an hour of prep and packing, and the two are
off. Ebony himself has his saddlebags full of books and notes.
His search for answers on The Dark Comet will lead him and Avery
back to his village. Stories of its discovery were always part
of their lore. Time to find the truth in these tales.

Avery brought her usual bag full of her own books, quills and
parchment with her. The two sat on a train headed towards his
village, Avery smiling as she cuddled next to Ebony. She
couldn't believe it's already been four months since they've
been together, yet here they are.
The nerves and excitement were still present, not only was she
going to his home village but she was going to meet his mom!
Avery knew she liked to make good first impressions, but this
one was the most important. What if his mom doesn't like me?
What if she doesn't like me because I'm not a batpony?!
Avery took a deep breath before opening her book, it was going
to be a long ride. All she knew is that she had to stop being
nervous, she just had to be herself.

Coldsteel himself had his wing wrapped around Avery as the train
rode along. He was excited to show her his home. Although part
of it made him worried. His village rarely had outsiders; and
considering their relationship, he knew some wouldn't approve.
Still, it didn't matter. As long as she was with him, all the
negativity would just fade away. Ebony looks out the window.
Lost in his thoughts; there was more to do than just that. The
captain had to learn some tales about the comet. The research
that's been going into it has been slower than expected. He
needs a new perspective, a refresher of what it originally is
seen as. Regardless, the answers will come. For now, Ebony just
enjoys the trip with his special somepony.

Between the cuddling and reading, Avery occasionally looked
outside of the window to see the sights. Despite her slight
nervousness, she was intrigued by the idea of seeing his
village. It would be interesting to have some sort of insight of
their customs and possibly to learn more about Ebony. Also,
traveling somewhere new was something that she's been wanting to
do for a while, first it was Canterlot now here.
Avery closed up her book, sticking it back into her bag. She
could already see the view of their station coming up, "We're
here already! ....Kind of..." She smiles as the train slows down
and comes to a stop.

Ebony gets up and stretches, "Yea, almost there. Its just a
short walk over." He reaches up into the luggage compartment and
pulls out their suitcases. "Don't expect too much excitement
when we get there. Most noctrals will be asleep during the day."
Once they depart, they are met with a cobblestone road through
the lush forest. There's a sign. 'Hollow Shades: 5 KM.' The
birds are chirping; animals scurry about. The overall weather is
pleasant with a cool breeze. Walking there is a relaxing
activity on its own. An hour later they finally arrive. Stone
cottages line along the roads as shops dot the occasional
crossroads. It's a very cozy spot. "Well, here we are. Hollow
Shades." As Ebony mentioned, the town is rather empty. Although
it may appear a tad unsettling were it inhabited by regular
ponies, the feeling quickly wears off in understanding why that
is. "So, my place is right this way." On their way to the other
side of the village, they only come across a couple of bat
ponies. They mind their business. Soon, they reach a rather
larger cottage. 'Coldsteel' is etched into the stone above the
doorway. The captain knocks and looks over to Avery, "Well, get
ready..."

Avery smiles and shakes her head ever so slightly at Ebony's
forewarning of the noctral's sleeping during the day, of course
she knew that and what to expect; Though it was kind of him to
remind her.
The walk to Hollow Shades had such amazing scenery, the woods
were so lively too! They stayed on the path but Avery could see
all the small woodland critters and even some deer. Part of her
just wanted to venture in and explore, but they were on a
schedule and maybe she'd ask Ebony before they left.
The village itself was almost what she expected it to look like,
of course she did do a little research. It was very quiet and
the structures of the shops and houses were quite beautiful. She
kept a smile on her face as they passed a couple bat ponies,
even though they payed the couple no mind. She was never in the
position where she was considered an 'outsider' before, though
she kept in mind to mind her business and be respectful. That
wouldn't be a problem for her though.
After a couple minutes of walking through the village, they
reach their destination. Her nerves were gone, until now. Avery
took a deep breath, insistent on shaking off the nerves. Her
head turns towards Ebony, giving him a puzzled look after his
statement. "For what?"

Suddenly, hoofsteps could be heard in the other side. They stop
as tumblers and locks click open. The door creaks. Soon, Ebony
and Avery are met with bright, blue eyes. "EBBY! MY BABY!" A
mare standing a head taller than the captain steps out. Her
black and silver mane matched with her charcoal coat help define
her toned physique. Like her son, she too bears a few scars,
although less than Ebony's. Sitting down, she hugs him, easily
lifting him up several inches from the ground. "Oh it's been too
long! You've grown up so much; my Ebby!"
"I've stayed the same size, Mama." Ebony replies, completely
immobile in her embrace.
"Uh huh, sure you have..." she sets him down and eyes him up.
"Have you been eating? You look like you haven't been eating."
Ebony rolls his eyes, answering as if he's said this many times
before. "Yes mama, I have. Although I haven't had the good stuff
in a while." He looks over to Avery, "Oh! Mama, this is Avery.
Avery, this is-"
"Glacier Coldsteel," she cuts in. Glacier formally bows to the
new arrival. "A pleasure to meet you."

Avery's ears perk up a bit in surprise once Ebony's mother
embraces him, it was a little funny but overall really sweet.
She watches as they greet and talk to each other, her heart
warming up at the sight of a mothers love and care. Something
that she's never experienced herself before, but she could
already tell from the whole 20 seconds they were there that his
mother loved him dearly.
She manages to muster up her small amount of confidence to greet
Glacier herself, Avery gives a sweet smile to the older mare
before attempting (as gracefully as she can) a bow in return.
"It's a pleasure to meet you as well Mrs. Coldsteel."
