Haywire
By: Haywire Date: July 9, 2017, 10:54 am
---------------------------------------------------------
Name: Haywire
Race: Earth Pony
Gender: Male
Age: Mid-Twenties
Physical Description: Male earth pony standing a little shorter
than the average stallion. His coat is green and his hair is
Brown and kept short and mostly unkempt with little care
afforded to its fashion whenever not on a stage. A pair of
orange goggles tinge the shade of his blue eyes and he has never
been seen without them. His cutie mark is a wild mass of wires
coming out of what looks like a small damaged machine, the
purpose of which not even Haywire knows.
Upon one of his front ankles is wrapped a device. Its small,
silver, and host to several buttons which light up and flash
many different colors. At first glance this could be mistaken as
a bracelet and is referred to as such by Haywire. Much like his
goggles, Haywire goes nowhere without this and is highly
reluctant to part with it under any circumstances. Ever since
the accident that leveled his old workshop, Haywire has adopted
a light jacket for the sake of keeping the sun off his back as
he travels, it sporting many a stain from oil and other such
things picked up from various workshops and garages. Pretty much
everything he owns is kept in his small saddlebag and pockets of
his jacket.
Special Talent: Mechanical engineering
Likes: Meeting new people. Being introduced to new concepts,
ideas and devices. Being helpful and providing assistance
whenever he is able. Taking apart or tinkering with whatever
machine he can get his hooves on to see how it works. Showing
off his inventions. Blinky lights.
Dislikes: Talking about himself. Haywire loves learning about
others should they wish to share but is very shy when it comes
to discussing his early life or long term goals. Obviously,
those who intend to pry will leave a bad taste in his mouth and
will severely harm relations as he would never do such a thing
himself.
Haywire is used to but never the less despises being
underestimated.
Anyone who attempts to tamper with his devices without his
express permission can come off as annoying for the stallion.
This goes double for anyone thinking about touching his
bracelet, such an attempt treating the guilty party to the rare
sight of Haywire legitimately losing his temper.
Haywire has a strong aversion to causing harm towards others and
normally opts to be a pacifist in most situations as he wishes
for his inventions to only ever serve as a positive force in the
world.
Strengths: Confusingly durable, Haywire can survive a ton of
punishment. His inventions often explode in his face,
electrocute him, set him on fire and so on and he only ever
views this as a momentary distraction as he soon returns to his
work with frazzled hair and a singed coat.
He also is very good at thinking outside of the box and in a way
most would not, this providing him with a unique perspective in
most scenarios despite this usually manifesting in gibberish to
most and sometimes being too confusing to be of help.
Haywire is extremely friendly and is easy to make friends with
as he is always overjoyed to meet someone new and learn about
their experiences and interests.
Haywire’s bracelet is a one of a kind device that he has never
divulged the details of to anyone. It is one of his most prized
possession with the reasons for this becoming obvious the moment
it is put to use. Through a few presses of a couple of blinky
buttons haywire is able to filter from the bracelet a malleable
silver substance that starts in a near liquid form before
solidifying into a shape of his choosing. The process takes a
mere few seconds and ends when the substance becomes a perfect
replica of the item Haywire desired, complete with accurate
coloring and comparable physical properties. Haywire uses this
device to form the tools he needs to work, but there is no
reason to believe it could not be used for creating countless
other small items or being re-purposed for other things. The
largest tool haywire has ever created with this bracelet was a
pry bar. When finished with his tools Haywire is able to melt it
back down into its original form and funnel it back into the
bracelet for storage. Despite its versatility, Haywire cannot
actually create anything he wishes with this device as he needs
to first be familiar with whatever he has in mind. As an
example, Haywire could never create a key for a lock without
first having a key at hand to model it after as the design would
be too complex and unique to guess. Anything made by the
bracelet can only temporarily hold its form if separated from
Haywire and will melt after a short time.
Aside from his bracelet Haywire often has a myriad of small
gadgets that may or may not be of use with whatever he doesn’t
have at hand being only a scrap pile away from being
constructed.
Haywire travels with a mechanical bird modeled after common
species such as blue jays and robins, and was built many years
ago. His name is Bubo and he is shy and prone to imitating a
statue among new ponies. Bubo is highly intelligent considering
his imperfect construction and size and serves as an inseparable
assistant to Haywire who very rarely leaves his side. His small
size makes it difficult to help with most tasks – as does his
sudden lock ups and technical hiccups plaguing the two on
occasion – but his durability is on par with Haywire’s and his
ability to fly comes in handy quite often. Regardless, its
Bubo’s companionship and support that Haywire values the most.
Weaknesses: Haywire is one hundred percent broke. Without even
a bit to his name he is forced to scrounge scrap for his work
and as a result is limited when it comes to producing new
inventions and machines. He is also homeless and can come off as
insane should someone be introduced to him in the middle of one
of his solo brainstorming sessions. Food for Haywire is often
limited to the grass he can legally graze and travel is often
done by hoof. The combination of his current lot in life and his
appearance often works against him when trying to find work.
While most of what he creates is too unstable to be of interest
to anyone, haywire’s bracelet has obvious value. This along with
his lacking in a secure place to store his things and reluctance
to harm others can make him a target for thieves and such should
they learn of its value.
Haywire’s pacifism can make him of little use in an offensive
situation. He will do his best to prevent harm all day, but if
asked to provide a weapon or means to attack another person he
may only disappoint.
Haywire was a drop out who never even finished primary school.
Most terms and concepts taught by a proper education is lost on
him and as such he can come off like a fool with his own made up
words and descriptions for his inventions making little to no
sense to anyone other than himself.
Fears: Being nobody.
Bio: Haywire is an energetic and friendly pony hailing from a
small rural town in the middle of nowhere. Showing an affinity
for machines at an early age, Haywire is mostly self-taught when
it comes to building and repairing his own tech and was one of
if not the best mechanical engineer to come out of his little
corner of the country at the time. Once reaching early adulthood
Haywire set out into the world to impress its inhabitants,
eventually building Bubo and finding his way to Manehattan then
establishing a workshop with which he would start building a
reputation and name for himself up until it’s destruction during
a particularly explosive test run of a new invention. For
whatever reason, Haywire opted to return to traveling after the
collapse of his workshop and has been seen all over the place
since helping where he can and showing off his inventions.
Extended Bio: Have you ever been so bored with life that you
could hardly focus on anything at all? Just drifting through the
day failing to have anything really grab your attention then
retreating into a realm of daydreams where stuff actually
happened? Haywire has been this bored. In fact, he was this
bored for most of his early childhood. Once he’d developed
enough to recognize what things were, Hay found his home to be
somewhat bland. Born to two farmhands out in the sticks of
western Equestria, the rolling fields and beautiful scenery that
such a rural area offered were nice and all, but he always felt
it was lacking a certain spark. Something fantastical and
exciting that could keep him awake and spend less time just
staring at the sky and wishing for divine intervention.
Fortunately for Hay, relief would eventually find him during one
average afternoon spent performing double his normal allotment
of chores. He’d gotten himself in trouble with his parents over
having once again wandered away from school due to it just
feeling like it was going so very painfully slow and was serving
his sentence by cleaning up around the property. His family
didn’t have much money, but they were usually not starved for
work and often times his father would bargain to be given old
defunct equipment and machines no longer needed or wanted by
their owners to satisfy his hobby of scrapping metal for an
extra buck and collecting spare parts “just in case”. Haywire
was usually kept away from these machines since his parents were
worried he’d hurt himself by climbing around on them, but there
was no one watching that day and he viewed it as a chance to
satisfy a burning question he’d had for quite some time.
What’s inside of those old tractors?
One hour later, and with a swiped tool box from the shed,
Haywire not only knew what was inside those rusted machines but
was halfway through rearranging the parts to his liking all the
way up to its inevitable collapsing in on itself as what he’d
been attempting to build had made no sense. He didn’t stop there
as he brought a rain of destruction down upon most of the
machines in the house as well and wasn’t until he was stopped
from maiming his mother’s radio that it was brought to an end
and his cutie mark was discovered.
From then on, the world had color. The joy Haywire felt when
taking apart whatever technology he could get his hooves on only
to reconstruct it to something weird and different was endless.
The possibilities of what he and his mistress science could
accomplish together soon became an obsession for Hay to realize.
The early years of his work was rough with few successful
designs that would last longer than a mere few hours, but once
he’d reached his mid-teen years Haywire was already leagues
beyond what anyone else in his little slice of Equestria could
do mechanically. It was he that would be called in to work on
anything if it was broken and there was absolutely no other
option available as, while incredibly good at building and
fixing machines, haywire’s inspirations and ideas could just as
easily turn your old beat up combine into a giant oven set to
confectionary or an all in one automated band.
This earned him a mixed reputation back home that Haywire didn’t
really pay any mind to. It wouldn’t matter in the end anyway as,
once he was old enough and just couldn’t resist any longer,
Haywire semi ran away from home. Only in his late teens and
dropping out from school meant his family obviously objected,
but Haywire would refuse to come back until he had something
mind blowing to show them. He didn’t ignore them of course as he
often sent back letters talking about the things he’d seen and
done while assuring them that he was doing just fine.
This was a lie. Well, a half-truth rather. Haywire was not doing
fine financially as most of what he made failed to capture the
attention of investors, but he was doing fantastic when it came
to seeing the world and meeting ponies. Somewhere down the road
he would build Bubo, his bestest friend ever, and make his way
to Manehattan where his fortune would begin to turn. There he
managed to actually make some money what with the city’s more up
to date technology allowing him to capture interest for his most
ambitious ideas and devices. Investors started to care and
Haywire managed to gather up enough bits to establish a workshop
where his productivity increased immensely. His neighbors
weren’t terribly thrilled by the near constant sound of muted
explosions and the occasional fire blasting from his windows,
but Hay was able to keep things primarily contained and avoid
getting himself evicted for years.
And then half of his workshop exploded with most of what was
inside being devastated beyond repair. Haywire was seen leaving
the rubble not too long afterwards and seemed to take this as a
cue to maybe take a break from sitting in one place as he was
back on the road not long after. Today, Haywire can be found
springing up pretty much anywhere the wind might take him as he
travels around meeting new people and building whatever comes to
mind at the time.
