       The City of Dreams
By: Ebony Coldsteel Date: June 16, 2017, 7:49 pm
       ---------------------------------------------------------
The roar of the engine echoes out into the open plains as the
train traverses its tracks to Canterlot. The overcast sky fills
the background as the passengers mingle or rest; inside of a
private booth, Ebony looks out of the window as he plans for the
day ahead. He had to meet with the Royal Mages for the book's
study. The usual paperwork needed to be addressed, but it was
simple enough. A smile appears on his face, knowing that today's
going to be much better than expected. The noctral's eyes look
back towards the cabin, finding Avery sitting across from him.
Coldsteel, after spending a few days to recover, knew he had to
return to Canterlot. But after their last outing, Ebony had to
ask her for another trip. He had to admit, he was surprised that
she agreed. Reaching over and grabbing his cup of coffee, he
takes a sip and a deep breath. "Hey Avery, thanks for coming
along on such short notice. How's your breakfast?"

Avery stared out the window with a huge smile on her face, this
was the first time she's ever been to Canterlot so she had a
hard time hiding her excitement. She notices the cloudy sky
above them but payed it no mind, she wasn't about to let some
clouds put a damper on her day. Avery compensated for the gloomy
weather with her favorite dress, a collared cream colored dress
with a floral pattern on it.
When Ebony asked her to come along with him to Canterlot there
was no way she'd say no. Plus, after the other night she was
hoping to find an excuse to spend time with him. Though Avery
had to admit part of her was a little nervous.
Avery directed her attention back towards Ebony, who looked
especially handsome today. I gotta get my head out of the
gutter... She placed down her tea before snuggling back up onto
the pillow, "Of course, I have a couple days off anyway so it's
not a problem at all. Plus, I have to thank you for the offer.
I'm really excited." Her voice perked up at the last part and
Avery tried to hide the slight bounce that she did.

"I'm rather excited too," Ebony replies, drinking more of his
beverage. "I can't wait to show you the Royal Archives; you'll
love it! In fact, I'm sure you enjoy an overall tour of the
castle." His wing scoops up one of his crumpets and brings it to
his mouth. Taking a bite, the noctral looks over to the
suitcase. "I'll have to drop off my findings to the court
wizards to be analyzed. Shouldn't take too long though. I also
got a bit of a surprise for you. Not going to say what or when
       it is though."

Just the idea of touring the castle was amazing, but actually
getting to do it? Avery considered herself lucky and didn't want
to squander this opportunity. Avery adjusted herself in the seat
before taking another bite of her blueberry muffin, "Mm, do
whatever you have to do. Don't let me get in your way." She
smiles before quickly frowning, "Wait...a surprise? You've done
so much already, I don't want you to do more! Plus...I
uh...didn't get you anything nor do I have a surprise for
       you..."

"Don't worry about it, Avery. I'll admit, it's a win win for
both of us." The noctral finishes his crumpet and takes another
sip of his coffee. His eyes glance to the window once more. The
blanket of clouds was rather soothing, his ears just flooped
down in relaxation. He stretches out his bad leg, getting only a
dull pressure feeling in it. Getting a few days to rest was
certainly needed, although he'll still be placing less pressure
on it. Soft jazz music plays throughout the train. Ebony loses
himself in the moment before looking over to the mare. "Back at
the bar, you showed deductive reasoning rather well. I only see
detectives or seasoned officers use those kinds of skills."

The ride was relaxing, although she wasn't fond of the gloomy
weather she had to admit it was perfect weather for drinking
tea. She watches as Ebony relaxes, and hopes that his leg feels
better than before. Almost as if he felt her watching, he looks
       over to her.
"Yeah." Avery laughs, remembering when she was a filly she'd
read all these detective books. They were always so smart and
cunning, perhaps she had learned from them.
"Well it's more of a natural gift, plus some tips I've picked up
from reading detective books. I like to observe others
sometimes, I did it alot when I was younger. Then you just gotta
listen carefully and pay attention, if you do that it can be
pretty easy to piece things together. I probably would make a
good detective now that you mention it." A sly smile crosses her
face, she wasn't completely serious but it would be pretty cool.
Avery looks back at Ebony, "I hope me being at the castle won't
be too much of an interruption, I don't want my presence to get
       you in trouble or anything."

"You won't be any trouble at all, Avery," Ebony waves his hoof,
taking a sip of his coffee. "I've left the daily work in good
hooves, so it won't be very busy to begin with. You'll be fine.
With those skills of yours, you'll fit right in."
The train continues onward towards its destination; finally, it
reached Canterlot. The clouds have dispersed somewhat, allowing
rays of light to brighten the city. Ponies trotted and conversed
about on the platform as the passengers made their exit.
Ebony himself was gathering his things. He stretches his leg
once more before standing up again. "Welcome to Canterlot,
       Avery."

Avery smiled, she didn't want to be any sort of disruption but
she was reassured. When she stepped out onto the platform with
Ebony, her grey eyes widened at the sight. There were already so
many buildings and ponies around, it was completely different
than Ponyville. "Whoa..." It was so beautiful with the streaks
of sun bursting through the clouds.
Avery stretched and threw her bag of books and parchment over
her, "Maybe I'll get some inspiration for my writing! Even if I
don't this is still a win!" Her excitement got the better of her
before throwing herself into a hug with Ebony, "You're so kind
for taking me here, thank you so much!" She stepped back and
       looked around once again.

Ebony returns the hug in full, "No thanks are needed, Avery. If
there's any places here in Canterlot you want to see, just let
me know." The Noctral leads Avery through the crowd towards the
main street. A private chauffeur was already set for them,
adorned with the Lunar Crest. He opens the door to the open
chariot for her, revealing the luxurious interior. The Lunar
Guards driving them through town give Coldsteel a friendly nod.
Ebony casually salutes them, "Hey you two, how are ya?" He sits
down next to her and closes the door.
       "Doing well, sir. Where to?"
"The castle, got to get some work done." With that the chariot
pulls out towards the main road. They speed up and spread their
wings, taking off towards their destination.

For a second, Avery was about to walk past the chariot but
stopped once Ebony did and when she saw the crest. A private
chauffeur? She also suspiciously squinted at Ebony when the
guards called him 'Sir'. Sir? Should I ask...no. Avery chose to
stay quiet about it for the time being.
Once they took off, Avery finally begins to talk. "So this is
kinda fancy." She looks around and sighs contently, she always
did enjoy being in the sky. Avery looks back over at Ebony and
gives him a sly smile, "...Sir." A giggle escapes her
       afterwards.
