       Reading The Fine Print

Ebony chucks his empty coffee cup towards a nearby waste bin.
Out effortlessly bounces off and lands Ion the floor. The
Noctral sighs with annoyance as he trots over to properly
dispose of it. With that sorted he continues on his way to the
Ponyville Library. The Captain never thought he'd be at a
library at opening... again. Regardless, the humble construction
of Ponyville was a nice change from the extravagance of
Canterlot. Walking up to the door, he finds himself several
minutes early. Not a problem, at least he brought a book. The
Noctral sits down near the entrance and begins reading.

       ---------------------------------------------------------
It was a classic beautiful morning in Ponyville, the sun was out
and the birds were chirping. Avery hummed lightly to herself as
she put on her favorite light pink sundress. Working mornings at
the Library were her favorite, it was never too busy and she
always got out in the early afternoon so she'd have the rest of
the day to herself. True, it could be a little boring at times.
Not many ponies wanted to come to the library in the morning,
but it gave her time to read all the books she wanted and to
have her cup of coffee. Avery grabbed her purple bag and
adjusted it over herself, throwing in a bagel and a few
crossword puzzle books. I really gotta get moving. She smiled
and inhaled the fresh morning air once she stepped outside, "Ah,
lovely." With that, she locked the door and flew off to her job.
Thankfully, it never took more than a few minutes to reach the
Library from her house. As she got closer however, she noticed a
grey blur in front of the Library. Squinting, she nudged her
purple glasses with her hoof to see better. Surely there's not
somepony waiting for us to open? That's very uncommon. A soft
thud came out from under her as she landed, not only was
somepony waiting for the Library to open, it was a batpony!
Oh.My.Goodness! There's never any batponies in Ponyville! He
looks so cool! Okay okay, don't nerd out Avery.
As Avery approached the Noctral she reached in her bag with her
wing and got out the keys to open the door, "Hey!" Avery
excitedly greeted the stallion, perhaps too perky this early in
the morning. "I usually never have anypony waiting outside for
us to open." She turned and unlocked the door to the building,
"But it's nice to see somepony interested in books, come in!"
Avery gestures him towards the door, smiling like goof.

"Oh uh... Thank you." Ebony follows the mare inside. The library
interior was cozy; he wasn't sure if he'll find what he needs,
but at least he can relax while doing so. By the brace still on
his leg, he needed a bit of rest and relaxation. With a slight
limp he trots to a nearby table sitting under the shade of the
blinds. Taking a seat, he delves back into his text. So far
it's just physical observations and hypothesis from Starswirl,
but nothing concrete. He had to get some notes and reference
books, but he wasn't sure where to start. He simply glances over
the shelves of books, looking half confused, and half intensely
       focused.

Avery observes the Noctral before setting down her things at her
desk. It took her a couple minutes to set up everything for the
day, but once she was done she headed over to the stallion's
table. "Sorry to interrupt, but my name is Avery if you needed
help with anything." She glances down at the book he was
reading, it wasn't anything she recognized but it sure did look
different than most books. "Did you need help with anything? I
know this Library like the back of my hoof." She smiles as she
       waits for his response.

Ebony looks up at the librarian, greeting her with a warm smile
and matching her gaze. "Avery? That's a nice name. Oh, uh thank
you though for the offer. Although I don't need anything right
away, that may change soon." He tries to direct his attention
back to the book, but another part of him wanted a distraction.
"How long have you worked here, Avery?"

"Thank you." Avery smiles at the compliment and decides to stay
standing next to him for the time being. "I've worked here about
six years now, I love it here. There's so much knowledge within
these walls that goes unnoticed by most." She giggles and shakes
her head, "I don't want to bore you with my rambling. If you
don't mind me asking, what brings you here? I've certainly never
seen you here before, I definitely would've remembered your
face." She catches her phrasing quickly and follows it up, not
wanting him to think the wrong idea. "Not in a bad way of
course, but it's not often batponies are around. It's a nice
change of pace seeing one though." Avery smiles, her words are
       true however.

Ebony chuckles at Avery's stumbling of her words. It wasn't the
first time a pony with good intent said something a certain way
about his appearance, and it certainly wouldn't be the last.
"This is actually for a work assignment," the says as he glances
over the book. It's cover was a pitch black with a snow white
glyph on the cover. The pages are worn, but are able to hold the
lines of text within. "I retrieved it from the Castle of the Two
Sisters. A written work from Starswirl the Bearded about an
ancient cosmic entity from before the Great Migration." The more
he talks about it, the more memories about the castle keep
showing up. The demons, tartarus, everything. "It uh... It's
expected to be a large project, but I'd figure I start somewhere
       so, here I am."

Avery is a little taken aback by the story behind the book, she
wanted to know how somepony managed to acquire such a thing but
decided to hold off on her curiosity. She wanted to help, but
she didn't know much about the subject herself. Who would?
However, she could tell he was having trouble with the research
and wanted to what she could.
"That's...interesting. I don't know if I'll be much help, but
I'd like to try." She continues in an optimistic tone, "There's
a whole section devoted to magic and oddities somewhat similar
to...that." Avery smiles as she turns around, flying off to the
back of the Library. A few minutes later she comes back to Ebony
with a decently high stack of books in her hooves.
"I gathered some books that I think would be relevant to your
research." She plops them down onto the table, a few falling to
the side. "I know it's a lot, but based off of what you told me
it's pretty imperative that you find something. I'm not busy, so
I could help you sort through these if you'd like." Avery
quickly adjusts her dress, swatting some dust bunnies off of it
that came from the books; She smiles sincerely at the stallion.

Coldsteel's eyes slightly widen at the amount of books she
brings in. He reaches down and scoops up the books that fell
over and sets them onto the table, "Thanks Avery, this should
certainly be a good start. I may need your help to narrow this
down though." The noctral glances over some copies and sets
aside a couple, "Can you sort out any books that center around
ancient languages? It appears that much of this is going to be
translating what some of the unknown texts are saying." Ebony
tries to adjust himself in his seat; his jaw clenches and ears
fold back as a jolt of pain shoots through his bad leg. He rubs
the brace supporting him before taking a deep breath and
       continuing his search.

Avery sits down next to him at the table, "Yeah, I believe I
grabbed quite a few." She sifts through the pile and grabs a
couple books, opening both at the same time and sets them next
       to each other.
Right before she gets to reading she's startled by Ebony's
sudden movements, "Whoa, are you okay?" She looks down at his
brace, Stupid question. He has a brace, he limped when he came
in, and is obviously still in pain. Avery was always pretty good
at observing others, but she didn't want to interrogate him on
his injury. "Pretty recent huh? Let me know if you need anything
okay? I have some medical supplies in the back if you need any,
my coworker keeps a decent amount on hand." She makes a
concerned face at him before looking down at the books, Avery
turns her head slightly in his direction. "Hey so...what's your
name?" She had to admit, she was curious about him.
