Re: A Night to Forget

Foxtrot simply nods to Mesa's thanks, deciding it's best to give
her some space to collect her thoughts. He was already
struggling with his own; he didn't like it, but he knew he would
have to talk to her about it. Even more so if things could get
dangerous in the next few hours. Questions needed to be asked,
answers would have to be given; as the bright red neon sign of
The Red Banana came into view, it was apparent that time wasn't
on their side. The car stopped a short distance away from the
club; Scarhoof's guards were already at the front door, letting
certain ponies past and kicking others to the curb.
"Pepper look back to the two, "Alright, here's your stop. We'll
be staking out around the corner; any gunfire, and we'll come
get ya. Just don't do anything stupid."
Foxtrot nods and gets out of the car, adjusting his suit before
trotting around to open the door for Mesa. He gave her a warm
smile, though he couldn't his a smidgen of concern in his
expression. "Ready to go?"

Mesa was broken out of her thoughts when they arrived. She
smoothed her dress and picked up her case, then turned to catch
Foxtrot's expression. She caught the concern immediately, and
sighed inwardly. Fortunately, she had dealt with hallucinations
before, on trips. Nopony had caught on then... So Mesa could
fake being okay. She could fix this.
So she smiled back, and even gave a light laugh. "I sure am.
Let's get this done." She got out of the car and started heading
towards the club. As they walked, she said in a quiet tone, "So
what's the plan, or are we just winging it?"

Foxtrot scans the club as they enter. The large dance floor
takes up the middle of the place. A bar on the far side sits
adjacent to the stage hosting a big band. Various ponies with
appropriate attire chat and dance and drink to their heart's
content. Several stallions wearing the same outfit, more than
likely Scarhoof's crew, are scattered throughout just doing
their jobs. Foxtrot looks over to Mesa as he begins walking,
"Let's get a booth first. We can scout the place out and plan
our next move."
The two were able to find a seat, a waitress approaching them.
"Hey you two, welcome to The Red Banana. It's happy hour so half
off drinks; here's a list of what we got."
"Thank you, we'll just need a few minutes," Foxtrot replies as
the server nods and continues making her rounds. The previous
letters that's been sticking out in his mind start to glow on
the menu. He knew now would be the best time to begin. "Mesa..."
the unicorn takes off his hat and sets it on the table. "I uh...
I wanted to talk to you about something. About the... odd things
that have been happening tonight."

Mesa looked around in fascination. With her fancy getup, she
almost felt like she fit in. It was an oddly nice feeling. She
sat down, settling her case close to her. Though she appeared to
be smiling and relaxed, she was subtly watching everypony around
her.
Her gaze darkened for the briefest of moments when Foxtrot
spoke, before she corrected her expression. She knew exactly
what "odd things" he was talking about, but she wasn't about to
be lured into that conversation that easily. In an attempt to
change the subject before they even got on it, she raised one
eyebrow and said, "Oh, you mean Al? Yeah, he was an odd
stallion. And him paying to have us all dressed up certainly
surprised me."

Foxtrot pauses at Mesa's answer before simply nodding and
looking out onto the scene, "Yea, crazy one that Al. Still,
going to a place like this, with someone like you, doing what
we're doing... I wasn't expecting it when I started my night."
His ears perk up, the unicorn pointing to a door next to the
bar. "There, they got a guard by that door near the bar. If we
can get through that..." He leads his hoof up towards the set of
large windows placed overlooking the room, "It would lead us to
the personal office. We can find what we need in there. After
that, we get out, find the crates, call it an evening." The
waitress returns nodding to the two to see if they're ready to
order, "Oh, hi! Ill have a whiskey on the rocks and a glass of
water please."

Mesa let out a tiny sigh of relief when Foxtrot appeared to drop
the subject. She nodded as she heard his plan, turning towards
the waitress when she came back. With how this evening was
going, she felt like she could use more alcohol, but she didn't
want to risk losing her focus. "Just water, please," she asked,
and the waitress nodded before leaving.
In a hushed tone, Mesa said, "But how do we get through? We've
got to distract or call away that guard somehow." She hesitated
before adding, "And what do you mean by that? 'Someone like
me'?" Mesa wasn't going to lie about feeling the tiniest bit
defensive, but she tried to keep her voice neutral.

"Someone who I can relate to." Foxtrot simply answers. He's
quiet for a moment, conflict present in his eyes. "Mesa, I'm
sure you've noticed me... spacing out and things like that
throughout the night. I..." The unicorn sighs as he covers his
face with his hoofs, dropping them back on the table when he
knows how to proceed. "Tonight, I went to the bar to get over
things that have been... following me for some time now. My
reenlistment in the guard is... reminding me of ponies I knew.
Familiar faces keep popping up and..." Foxtrot face hoofs, "I'm
sorry. I- I probably sound crazy right now. I just want to
explain why I'm a bit... off at times." He was certainly
concerned, but he'd rather get this out of the way before it
worsens; either by the new letters and symbols showing up, or
the ghosts of the past that won't give him solace.

Mesa blinked as she was suddenly faced with a decision. To
hopefully help Foxtrot feel better, and put her own secrets at
risk in the process; or to brush him off, walk out, and be done
with the whole thing. Nopony needed to know she saw things,
heard things that weren't real... Nopony needed to know that
because of her, three ponies were dead.
Mesa took a deep, shaky breath, then made her decision. She
hesitantly spoke. "You don't sound... crazy, Foxtrot. So you...
see things that aren't, y'know... really there?" She tentatively
asked.

He couldn't even look her in the eye as his ears fell back,
"Ye-"
"And here are your drinks!" the cheery waitress pops out,
catching the unicorn off guard, "Was there anything you two
needed?"
"N-no. Uh... thanks." With drink in hoof, he watches her trot
off, still recovering from the abrupt interruption. Foxtrot
takes a sip of his drink and takes a deep breath. He's only able
to look Mesa in the eyes for a moment before resuming, "Yea...
It hasn't happened for a long time. I thought it was going
uphill. Just... the stuff I've done, it follows me." Taking
another drink, he finds out he's already gone through half of
his glass. "Today was just one of those bad days that went
around in a blur." He rests his chin on his hoof as he looks out
into the crowd, his tone more nonchalant. "I... think I've
gotten in over my head with this." The symbol in his vision was
bright, the entire left side blurred. Foxtrot holds off on
mentioning that, he knew damn well that has a totally different
matter .

Mesa barely even noticed the waitress returning with drinks, so
focused on Foxtrot. When he paused, the pegasus's eyes flicked
back and forth in indecision. Suddenly, she slammed her hoof
down on the table as her eyes met Foxtrot's. "No," she said
forcefully. "Just because you see things, that doesn't mean
you're crazy. It doesn't mean you're in over your head, or that
there's something wrong with you, or that... that you're a bad
pony." Her voice broke at the last part.
She abruptly broke eye contact and hung her head, before she
quietly whispered, "...right?"
