Foxtrot's ear stops twitching when he hears Mesa's voice; he
looks over to her with the realization of she's been looking at.
"Oh! Sorry I uh..." The stallion looks away; his ears folding
back with some guilt, "I got distracted, lost in my thoughts,
just... thinking." His replies were vague, as if trying to avoid
the topic altogether. "Let's uh... head inside." Foxtrot walks
in, keeping the door open for Mesa to enter. Instantly they are
greeted with a rather fashionable mare sporting a blue dress and
a fancy hat with feathers. "Hello. My friend and I are here to
browse for some fashionable wares, anything special you
       recommend?"
"Of course, darling!" she exclaims with excitement. "All of my
outfits are the most cutting edge in the fashion of the area.
Please, search til your heart's content and don't even hesitate
to ask me anything if you need any assistance. The suits are on
the left, the dresses are found on the right."
"Thank you." Foxtrot replies before looking over to Mesa; he
couldn't look her in the eyes though, part of him worried on how
she would look at him in return. "I'll be over there trying to
find something. Um... yea." The unicorn's usual calm demeanor
has faltered. The letters that were highlighted start to appear
everywhere. The symbol in his vision is even brighter, the whole
       experience starting to overwhelm him.

Mesa, concerned and curious as she was about Foxtrot's behavior,
sensed it would do no good to prod him. She had a feeling the
best thing to do was just pretend nothing was wrong. "Okay, good
luck," she told the stallion before heading towards the dresses.
She started looking through them, trying to ignore the
salespony, who was hovering. Mesa found a simple white gown
which she pulled out to examine more closely. The salespony was
immediately by her side, clicking her tongue.
"Oh darling, you don't want that!" Mesa raised one eyebrow. "You
said all of them were cutting edge, so any of them should work.
And I like this one." The other mare gently pulled the dress
away and returned it to its place. "Not every dress works for
every mare!" she told Mesa patiently. "What 'works' depends on
many factors. What sort of look are you going for?" Mesa
hesitated before she uncertainly answered, "Something that will
       make me blend in."
The well-dressed mare nearly fainted clean away.
"No, darling! The whole point of a dress is to make one stand
out! To draw the crowd's eye, to push the very limits of fashion
in one daring outfit!" She said passionately. Mesa tried to
interrupt. "But I want-" The mare simply held up one hoof with
such authority that Mesa fell silent. "I don't think you know
what you want," she announced. "So I will simply have to pick
for you." Her tone left no room for argument, and Mesa sighed.
"Whatever you say then..." The mare grinned and turned to start
looking through the dresses as she spoke.
"Now, for you, I'm thinking a very specific image. A beautiful,
mysterious mare whose dark tastes in fashion are only rivaled by
her shrouded, tragic past. One who-" "My past is not tragic!"
Mesa half-yelled, her voice shaking slightly. The mare shushed
her. "I'm making no assumptions darling, merely trying to find
the right image for you! Now, try on this one." Mesa huffed,
embarrassed at her outburst, and took the dress in question
before disappearing into the fitting room. "Call me if you need
any help!" Trilled the salespony cheerfully, then headed over to
Foxtrot to see how he was coming.

Foxtrot was lost in his own little world, at this point he
wasn't even paying attention to the outfits or wardrobe. What
was this symbol? Why these letters? What are they trying to say?
He snaps out of it when he hears Mesa across the room; he
couldn't hear what she said exactly, but it had something to do
about the past. Still, it brought him back to the real world and
allowed him to focus on the task at hoof. Browsing, glancing,
narrowing down the right size he was able to pin it down to a
select few. By that time he turned around to see the salespony
       approach him.
"And how has your search been sir? Need assistance in any way?"
she asks, more curious in his choice of fashion than actual
       customer service.
"Uh yea, I've narrowed it down to a couple but I can't quite
decide on which." He trots over to a solid hunter green button
down with a matching tie and hat, "I'm stuck between this one,
and..." his eyes scan the wall before he finds his second one.
"This, the charcoal grey with the silver striped tie and black
       cuffs. What would you recommend?"
"For a stallion of your stature? Well..." the mare walks over
between the two, switching her gaze among them. "Your outfit
must tell your story," her hoof picks up the green suit,
"whether it's a tale of a hero set once upon a time..." She then
picks up his second option, and trots over to him, "or a story
of drama, downfall, and redemption. You look like a pony whose
adventure spans both; but what is just as amazing..." The green
suit is placed back on the shelf, but is swapped out for a green
tie which replaces the silver one of the charcoal outfit, "is
that they're all true. Here, try this one out and see me when
you're ready." Foxtrot nods, rather curious about how much this
random sales mare really knows about him. Either way, he heads
to the fitting room, and tries on his new outfit.

After a minute or two, Mesa cautiously poked her head out of the
dressing room. The salespony quickly caught sight of her and
motioned her out. "Come out, don't be shy!" Mesa slowly came out
of the dressing room. She wore a beautiful dark red flapper
       dress

       he
front and back of the dress. Fortunately, the dress had been
designed for a pegasus, and Mesa's brown wings rested outside
it, shuffling a bit in self-consciousness. To complete the look,
she wore a sequined gold headband with a large black ostrich
feather and a small bit of black netting forming a short veil
       over Mesa's eyes.
The other mare just stared at her, and Mesa's cheeks grew red.
"It's too tight, isn't it?" She muttered, and quickly started to
back back into the dressing room. A smile slowly grew over the
salespony's face, and she trotted right over to Mesa, grabbing
her hoof and pulling her out in to the center of the boutique.
"You are a vision, darling!" She squealed excitedly. "I knew
that dress would be perfect for you! The color brings out the
red in your mane so wonderfully."
"Re-really?" Stammered Mesa. Truth was, she wasn't used to
looking... well, this nice, and it might her slightly
uncomfortable to be complimented. "I guess I'll take this one
then." The other mare continued beaming at her, and
uncomfortable with all the attention, Mesa looked around and
called out. "Did you find anything, Foxtrot?"

"Yea," Foxtrot answers from his dressing room, "I just gotta
sort out this tie. One second..." A couple of minutes pass
before he steps out sporting his new charcoat suit and green
       tie

/>He tops it off with a matching vintage fedora and proper cuffs
by the hooves, "It's a good fit, just gotta wear it in a bit.
How does yo-" As soon as he looks over to Mesa, he stops dead in
his tracks and jaw nearly dropping. "Wow, Mesa you look...
stunning. I mean, you look very awesome -er, what I mean is that
you look just..." he sighs, shrugging and accepting the fact
that he looks like a bumbling fool, "perfect."
"As do you my fine sir!" the sales mare adds as she trots over
and then around him. She tugs his sleeves a few times and
readjusts his hat before finally taking a step back. "Now that
is an outfit that speaks volumes for you. For both of you! Now,
I believe you two are set to go out and enjoy the evening!"
"Oh, uh how do we sort out the payment?" Foxtrot asks.
The mare waves her hoof, "Al called ahead of time, you two are
already taken care of. Just go out and do what you have to do.
       Tell him I said hi."
Foxtrot nods, "Sure, I'll send him your regards. Thank you!" He
trots over to the door and opens it for Mesa, keeping quiet to
prevent himself from saying anything else. However it doesn't
hide the slight red on his face whenever he sees her though.

Mesa just stared at Foxtrot when he came out. He looked, well...
handsome. Mesa had always preferred the more rugged type of
stallion, but seeing Foxtrot in a nice suit and tie...
       Damn.
That's when the stallion suddenly started complimenting her, and
her eyes found the floor as she blushed slightly. However, when
Mesa was nervous or flustered, she didn't babble, quite the
opposite. Her jaw clamped shut and she didn't say a word to
compliment Foxtrot in return. She doubted she could find the
       right words anyway.
She started towards the door, before she suddenly remembered
something and spun around. "Oh! Uh... do you have bags or cases
here?" The mare nodded, then suddenly clapped in excitement
before rushing away. "I have just the thing!" She called out
over her shoulder, quickly returning with a fashionable black
briefcase. "Adds just the right edge," she said cheerfully, and
Mesa nodded in thanks. She quickly piled her things into it,
taking extra care with her bow. Then shutting it and balancing
it neatly on her back, she trotted out the door. She avoided
Foxtrot's eyes as she did so, still feeling awkward after her
       reaction.

When Roni and Pepper hear the door open again, they turn around
to find Mesa and Foxtrot in their new outfits. Pepper, cigar
hanging from the corner of his mouth, lets out a loud whistle
over to them. "Looking good you two. I see you guys pulled all
the stops on this one, perfect. You'll blend right in." He heads
over to his door and opens it, "Alright, let's head out." Roni
nods and gets back in the driver's seat, revving the engine back
up as it waits for them to board. Once inside, the car drives
       off down the streets.
Foxtrot keeps his gaze out the window, partly to sort out why
he's still seeing the strange symbols and letters, the other
reason being the slight embarrassment at his display in the
shop. It was a bit baffling he figures as the car slows down at
a red light; his eyes wander around the corner as he thinks back
to the last time. His ear slightly twitches as he sees somepony
standing just behind the corner of the building in front of him.
Like before, they wore a familiar attire with striking accuracy.
The unicorn shuts his eyes. He knew who it was; he didn't have
to see them again, even if it is another visual mirage. The pull
of the car accelerating draws his eyes to open. 'Now's not the
time Fox. Just stay calm. What is going on with these letters?
And what the hay is this stupid symbol? It's past the point of
an annoyance.' Still, despite what's been going on in his head,
the whole night has been going well; despite the unusual
       circumstance.

Mesa set the suitcase on the seat beside her, keeping her gaze
forward. This night was turning out very interesting indeed.
Suddenly, some movement caught her peripheral and Mesa
automatically turned her head to follow it. Her jaw dropped. The
car was passing a large, ornate theater that was at least three
stories high. But that wasn't what caused Mesa's shock. No, that
was reserved for the figure, plummeting from the theater's
rooftop, towards the hard sidewalk below.
"STOP!" Mesa shrieked aloud at the driver, her protective
instincts kicking in as her hoof searched for the door handle,
even though she knew she would never get there quickly enough.
Before she could even open the door, the figure landed with
audible crack on the unforgiving ground, and Mesa gasped in
horror. But the fallen pony's face, now illuminated by the
streetlight, was ever so familiar. Her father lay still and
       broken as Mesa reeled back.
Her brain scrambled to recover, to realize what Mesa was seeing
wasn't real, but before it could fully do so, Mesa's eyes
flicked to the theater's rooftop. It was dark, but there was a
silhouette there, a silhouette that Mesa somehow knew had not
only watched her father fall, but had been the one to push him.
Mesa squinted, trying to identify the figure. But then she
blinked, and both her father and the mysterious silhouette were
       gone.

The car screeches to a halt; fortunately it was the only one on
the road at the time. "What!? What happened!? Roni asks,
fervently looking around for anyone. "There's no one there!"
Roni slings his hoof back over the seat, ready to yell Mesa's
       ear out.
Before he can get a word out, Foxtrot cuts in, "I saw it too!"
Pepper and Roni look over to the unicorn in confusion. Foxtrot
looks over to Mesa for a moment before continuing. "There was
uh... dog... who... a rat." Surprisingly, they fell for it and
matched the mare's stunned expression. "Yea, it was terrible.
Mesa had a pet... rat, bad stuff. We uh, should keep going."
Without a word, the two look back forward as the car starts
again. He knew that expression, that look of terror at something
that isn't really there he's known all too well. It's not very
comforting to know he's been going through similar experiences
tonight. Even worse with what's to come. Still, he looks over to
the window, keeping one ear pointed to her if she needed
       anything.

Mesa turned to the others in time to see Foxtrot cover for her.
She was silent for a few moments as they started driving again.
Then she looked away, but she did murmur a quiet, "Thank you..."
Feeling she needed to give an excuse, she added, "I thought I
saw a cat in the street," she lied, her shaky voice betraying
her and making the lie apparent. She continued watching out the
window, not wanting to think about what she had just seen, but
not being able to stop herself.
What if... what if that wasn't just a hallucination? What if it
had been a memory? Her heart sank. She suspected who the
mysterious figure was, but she couldn't face the possibility...
She just couldn't. Why couldn't she remember that day?! Maybe it
was for the best, maybe her brain was trying to protect her? All
these thoughts swirled around Mesa's mind as she stayed silent
for the rest of the ride.
