Re: A Night to Forget

Foxtrot leaves a little pause, taking a sip of his drink as he
thinks of a response to Mesa's question. "Y-yea. Being in the
guard does need some of that. Not just in terms of fighting or
combat, but to do the right thing when you have to." The glowing
orb has disappeared by now, giving way to more chilling sights.
It seemed that wherever his eyes wandered, he saw someone too
familiar to his liking; what was worse was the patch each one if
these ponies had on their shoulders. The 22nd Frontier Guard.
"It's the courage to make the tough calls. And... ultimately..."
Soon, the ponies bearing his past insignia all stop what they're
doing, and look at him with a soulless stare. "... to live with
the consequences of your choices." At this point, he directs his
gaze between Mesa and his glass, apparent that he doesn't want
to see anything around them.
"Alright, you all done here?" Pepper asks as he gets up from his
seat. Roni himself nods and rises, leaving the tip for the
server. "Good. We approach this just like the boss instructed,
don't need to cause any trouble here." The two stretch out and
casually trot over to Foxtrot and Mesa. Out of respect they both
take off their fedoras. "Uh, excuse me. We apologize for
interrupting, but are you officer Foxtrot of the Royal Guard?"
The outside interaction broke the unicorn free from his
hallucinations as if they were never there. He immediately puts
on his professional appearance. "Yes, that's me. How may I help
you gentlecolts?"
"Actually, we'd like to help you out, sir," Pepper puts his hat
back on. "Our employer has a tip on some... shady dealings set
to go down tonight here in Canterlot. He asked us to relay the
message just to you and your partner in crime here."
Foxtrot is silent for a moment, finishing off his drink first.
"Alright, I uh... appreciate the gesture, but why not just go to
the nearest guard station to report this?" Pepper opens his
mouth, only to be cut off. "In fact, let me answer that for you.
Your... 'employer' is someone who, more than likely, doesn't
want to associate themselves with the law. If this a random tip,
chances are they're ratting out some competition. So the new
question is, why come to me and my sergeant over here," he nods
over to Mesa, "for this specific case?"
Pepper couldn't help but chuckle, "Well, those deductive skills
answered some of your question. Look, my boss wanted just to
tell you, specifically. We didn't get a reason, just orders. If
you want to meet him face to face, you can. Just know that this
is the kind of info that could mean life or death for your guard
buddies."

Mesa finally seemed to pick up something was... off about
Foxtrot, and she frowned slightly. She was about to ask if he
was alright when they were approached by two stallions.
The brown mare tilted her head slightly when Foxtrot referred to
her as "his sergeant", barely managing not to wince when her
father let out a loud laugh only she could hear. "You? A guard?
Oh, that's rich." Mesa wanted to concentrate on what the
stallions and Foxtrot were saying, she really did, but as her
hallucination continued insulting her, it made it harder and
harder to focus on what was real.
Finally, she turned away for a moment to give what appeared to
everypony else as empty air an absolutely vicious glare. It
seemed to do the trick, as her father vanished from sight again
and Mesa was able to hear what the others were saying. She
wasn't particularly sure how to react, so she just glanced at
Foxtrot, her eyebrows raised.

Foxtrot was silent at first. The whole offer was suspicious, but
something that could threaten his fellow guards? The unicorn
sighs before glancing to Mesa for a moment. "Alright. I'll bite.
If I find that this is some set up."
Pepper raises his hoof, "You have my personal word, Mr. Trot. My
boss is aware of your capabilities. And you could bring your
backup if you'd want."
"Ok. I need a couple of minutes before I head out. Could you
guys give us a moment?" Foxtrot taps the counter, another refill
entering his glass.
Pepper nods, adjusting his suit, "Of course. My associate and I
will be waiting outside whenever you're ready. Thank you." The
two stallions make their way outside.
Foxtrot's downs his drink in one go, looking rather conflicted
at the whole ordeal. "Damn it. I'm sorry about all that Mesa.
Sometimes work follows you around. Unfortunately I can't ignore
something like this. Just..." he face hoofs, "Why'd it have to
be now?"

Mesa watched as the stallions left, then looked at Foxtrot.
"Look, don't worry about it." She looked down at her own glass,
hesitating before she suddenly squared her shoulders. "I bet we
can get this done in a half hour, if not less," she said, her
tone business-like. "After all, I'm your trusty sergeant,
right?" She grinned at him. "Come on, let me come along. I..."
The grin faded slightly. "...I could use a distraction." She
took one last sip, finishing off her drink. She was starting to
feel the vodka slightly, feeling a bit like she was floating,
but still had her wits about her. She pulled out the bits to pay
for her drink, as if intending to come along regardless if
Foxtrot agreed.

"Sure thing, Mesa. Just stay close and keep an eye out for
anything suspicious." Foxtrot downs what's left of his drink,
makes the payment, and gets up to stretch. He hears the light
piter patter of light rain on the window. The unicorn makes his
way to the door, holding it open for Mesa as a Duesenberg Model

how neat and clean it was on the inside. He scooches over for
Mesa as he looks around. "You guys have a nice ride here."
Pepper chuckles, "Ah I've had ol Jane here for 10 years now. She
the only gal that don't give me any trouble."
"Ten years? She looks like she just got out of the lot."
"Yea, well when you take care of your things, they do the sane
for you." Pepper closes the door behind them and takes a seat.
"Alright, let's go, Roni." The car slowly pulls out onto the
road, smooth jazz gently playing in the background from the
car's radio.

Mesa grinned at Foxtrot's agreement, and followed after him. She
got in the car, blue eyes wide as she looked around. She had
never been in a car before, to be honest, but she could tell
that this one was its own kind of beautiful. She watched as the
city passed by out the window, fascinated by the whole
experience. "How fast can, uh... 'she' go?" Mesa asked
curiously, then immediately hoped the question didn't reveal how
ignorant she was on the subject.

"120 mph, tops," Pepper answers as the car glides along the
roads. "Due to the uh... nature of our business. She's set with
armor plating, and enforced bumpers. Not many cars can handle
her kiss."
The group travels east, far enough to enter the 47th District.
The area recently had an influx of ponies from Manhattan. The
surge of ponies brought about an economic and cultural boom.
Jazz, flappers, and neon signs; let the good times roll. More
cars like theirs started to populate the scene. Stallions in
tuxes and mares sporting more vintage outfits trot and talk and
enjoy the evening.
"So... Mr. Trot..." Roni starts up as he makes a turn through an
intersection. "I gots a question for ya."
"Go ahead." Foxtrot replies, still looking out the window. The
circle in his vision starts to appear again, it's small and
faded so he pays it no mind.
"Have you been to Manhattan before?"
"A coupe of times, why?"
"Your name's popped up recently around there. That's how our
boss was able to hear about you." Roni looks up in the rear view
mirror. "Story goes you were out sorting some business. That
business though rocks the entire downtown area. That true?"
Foxtrot is silent for a moment, not turning to anyone as he
answers, "Yea, it is. Why?"
"Just wondering." Roni turns his gaze back to the road.

Mesa inhaled sharply. 120 mph?! That was... insane. She supposed
it would be impolite to request to see such a speed, and she
gave a small, inward sigh of disappointment. She continued
watching out the window. Once they entered the 47th District, it
was like a whole other world.
Her ears swiveled to hear the conversation. Her gaze turned
curious at the mention of some mysterious "business". Not
tactless enough to ask about it outright, Mesa still turned to
Foxtrot. "Manehatten, huh? I've actually never been. What's it
like?"

A smile curls up on his face, "It's lovely, actually. There's so
much diverse food and spots to go to. Favorite part was when I
had to patrol the skyline. The view of the lights were
spectacular."
"Fine music everywhere you go. But the big bands and swing draw
the most crowds," Pepper chimes in. "But there's jazz and easy
listenings for a more quiet night."
"We're here." Roni slows down the car until they park in front a
humble looking restaurant. The two stallions get out of the
vehicle and open the doors for their guests.
Foxtrot steps out and looks around. He spots the horseshoe
swaying above the door. The small glowing orb in his eye
suddenly magnifies, brightening to blind him. He finches back,
getting Pepper's attention. "S-sorry. There was a bug near my
uh... eye. Let's uh... head in inside." The unicorn didn't want
to say anything, but the glowing circle in his vision refined
itself, taking the shape of a symbol; however, he doesn't really
know what it is. Familiar, of course, but the name eludes him.

Mesa nodded, looking thoughtful. "Maybe I'll go there someday,"
told Foxtrot as she got out of the car. She generally wasn't
much of city mare, but she did like good music. She noticed
Foxtrot's flinch and frowned. She didn't see any bug, but she
didn't press the matter, just nodded again. "Alright, let's go."
