Re: A Night to Forget

Only Foxtrot's ears twitch at the repeat of the glass shattering
against the wall. He looks over to the bartender, who had just
finished cleaning up the first glass. "Don't worry, pal. I got
that one. Can you bring anther one, please?" The shattered glass
on the floor dimly glow and levitate off the floor. They are set
onto the table. Each piece slowly fits together until the glass
is completely remade. Each crack is lined black; not a perfect
reconstruction, but it was fixed. Knowing that another glass
won't be lost, he proceeds to prepare making the same brew. He
uses the same glass though, refilling it back to the brim before
sliding it over to Fox. Drink ready, the unicorn lifts his hoof
and pulls out a couple of straws from the nearby dispenser.
Unwrapping each, he connects the two to form a longer tube. Bent
and curved in a few spots, it's adjusted to reach Mesa. "Here
yea go. This glass isn't going anywhere this time."
"This time? Why of the entire day and night did we have to do
this at this time of night," the driver asks as everyone returns
to their business, "Pepper, we could've been doing something
more important th-"
"We could've, Roni," the other stallion replies as he adjusts
his navy blue suit, "but we ain't. If we have to do this, then
we get it done."
Roni nods, "True. Just... why the way all out here? You'd figure
Al would pick more... local talent." The earth pony takes a
drink of his beer, wiping of his face with the sleeve of his
dark grey pinstripe outfit.
"Eh, Al has his reasons." Pepper shrugs and returns to his
drink.

Mesa watched as the glass was repaired and slid over to her,
complete with a straw. Mesa gave Foxtrot a tentative smile, one
that quickly faded when her father commented in her ear, "Oh
look, he's being nice to you, almost like a friend... How long
do you think he'll stick around, hmm? Or, for that matter,
survive?"
"Thanks," Mesa said, trying to smile again. "I don't know what's
gotten into me tonight," she lied. She had to admit, she felt a
little foolish drinking vodka through a straw, but that was
probably the safest situation for the glass. "My name's Mesa, by
the way." She offered a hoof.

The unicorn reaches out and shakes Mesa's hoof, "Foxtrot, a
pleasure to meet you. So..." his hoof glows as his own glass
slides across the counter. "I heard that you went through the
Neighagra River. I've traversed around it, but never straight
through."
"I'd imagine he'd be up creek without a paddle. Those parts
could kill ya." Roni finishes his first beer, a second one
waiting right next to him. "I'd imagine doing that much
collateral would get you killed."
Pepper is halfway done his second pint; the night was still
young, so there wasn't much rush. Still, they couldn't wait
forever. "Literally. The whole dang thing turned to rubble. Our
usual dive was three blocks away and we felt it."

"Nice to meet you, Foxtrot." Mesa's eyes caught sight of the
glowing hoof and she tilted her head slightly in confusion,
though she didn't comment on it. A more genuine smile grew on
her face as she was reminded of the adventures of the day.
"That's too bad, you've missed a lot then. The section below the
falls has the most exciting rapids. One by the bottom of Foal
Mountain is known as Discord's Gut, and it's a great deal of fun
to go through."
She took a sip of her drink before glancing at him. "I would not
suggest doing it without an experienced guide, however, too many
ponies have lost their lives on those rapids."

Pepper finishes his second glass, "Oh yea, I've tossed a few
over. It's a two person job though." His final drink arrives,
the bottle popping open.
"Yea, I... probably will stay away from that general area for a
bit. Perhaps another walk though, it's been some time." Foxtrot
adjusts the straw before taking a sip of his beverage. The
glowing circle in his vision grows larger, covering a third of
his eye. "I take it you've been through there several times?"
Roni leans forward, already done with drinks and just waiting
for the time to pass. "It has been some time since I've given it
a tune up. So on the way back I need to stop by the shop to pick
it up." Pepper nods, eyeing up the two ponies at the bar.

Mesa squinted as she tried to remember. "Let's see... I probably
did the run at least a half dozen times as a passenger, never at
this time of year though. Then I tried it with just me and
another guide, when the water is as high as it is now, several
times until I felt confident. Since then, I've done it four
times with passengers. So... I'm pretty familiar with that
stretch of water." She took another long drink before adding,
"So you've seen Neighagra... do you travel a lot?"

Foxtrot nods, "Yea, I used to for work when I was stationed
different places. The international trips were always the most
exciting." The unicorn looks down to his glass as he tilts it in
his hoof. Most of his drink was consumed, another possibly on
the way. "Although several were just waiting at the ports a few
hours; I'll count them regardless. Farthest I've been to was
Saddle Arabia. Nowadays I'm just here in Canterlot."
"So even after all that, they let him back into another city?"
Roni tips his at up as he takes another drink. "I'm surprised
they didn't just kick him out of the country."
"Well, that's why Al wanted to inquire about it." Pepper was
down to the last sip. "When your done that one, we'll get this
out of the way so you can go get your watch. I've been looking
to get some sleep soon."

Mesa's ears perked up. "Saddle Arabia? How exciting! I've been
all over Equestria, but never outside of it." She took another
drink of her vodka. "So why'd you stop traveling? Did you change
jobs?" She asked curiously before quickly glancing away and
tacking on an, "If you don't mind me asking." Even though her
father had been quiet for a bit now, she didn't dare glance
around to double check, instead relying on the conversation to
distract herself.

Foxtrot nods as he finishes off his glass; his reflection
staring back at him. He brushes some his grey and black mane
away from his face. "Yea, a lot of it was due to a change of
employment. I recently returned to The Royal Guard. I worked
with an outside organization; they're the ones who sent me
overseas. Unfortunately, we had a falling out. The ones in
charge weren't doing... legal things."
"Didn't we hire those guys at one point?" Roni has finished his
drink by now his olive colored eyes look over to Pepper. His
partner nods, leaving out any details.
"I'll admit though that the Guard sent me the furthest within
Equestria." Foxtrot pauses as the sound of another glass filling
hits his ears. In moments he has his new drink, Mesa herself
getting a refill in her own. "I've gotten stationed along the
northern borders, by Vanhoover..." He breaks eye contact with
Mesa when something appears in the corner of his eye. It wasn't
the glowing orb, which has significantly faded. Rather the sight
of a plum colored stallion at the end of the room. He looks so
familiar. The appearance of his thick framed glasses sends
chills down the unicorn's spine. Foxtrot immediately return back
to his original spot. "Sorry, thought I saw someone I know.
Anyways, I've just been stationed here for now."

Mesa raised one eyebrow as she listened, only turning to give
the bartender a nod of thanks for the refill, before she turned
back. When Foxtrot looked away and then looked back, Mesa didn't
think much of it until her heard his excuse. It was funny, she
often said the same thing when her dead family decided to show
up.
As if on cue, her father scoffed loudly, breaking Mesa's
concentration. Her father cut in, "A guard, huh? Probably a
coward, then. I'm sure you two will get along wonderfully then."
Mesa didn't even notice her ears automatically going back at the
insult. She just cleared her throat.
"Even if you don't travel as much as you used to, I imagine
being a guard must be pretty exciting. It's a job that I bet
requires a lot of courage," she said with an odd sort of
forcefulness, as if she was making an extra effort to say the
exact opposite of what her father did.
