Morgayne tore her gaze away from the seascape to eye Lucid
suspiciously. "'The outer most level of my subconscious'?" she
asked skeptically. "I've never heard of any unicorn that can do
that. If you can 'explore' my subconscious, why don't you prove
it?" Morgayne said in a challenging sort of way, not letting her
slight nervousness at the prospect show.

"Here, let's go find yourself in this." Orchid responded. "See,
I am able to create a dreamscape based on some thoughts and
       memories."
She floated herself and Morgayne around until finally Morgayne
would be able to recognize herself.
"Unless something is really bothering you, this should for the
most part be a pretty innocent memory." There was a crack
beneath them that looked like it was spewing out a gold light.
"We can dive deeper to your more repressed memories."

Morgayne floated about until she caught sight of a very young
selkie, not even old enough to transform yet, playing and
swimming with the others. Morgayne's face fell. "I... was about
to ask if that means you can read minds, but I see you cannot.
Because this never happened. This was a common daydream I had as
a child." She gave Lucid a long look at her suggestion.
       "Okay..." the selkie finally agreed.
They would dive into the crack and emerge into a dreamscape very
different then the one before. It appeared to be the same place,
but there were several key differences. It was darker, much
darker. The plants were less bright and no fish swam about.
Instead, there was a slightly older Morgayne, corned by several
other selkies, children and adults alike.
"How can you do what you do?" Snapped one. "You're a poor excuse
       for a selkie."
Young Morgayne looked like she was about to cry. "I... I have
to..." she said in a shaky voice. "He'll... kill me if I
       don't..."
"You have a choice!" A different selkie shot back. "You brought
       this upon yourself..."
       "No I didn't! I didn't make the deal, I swear I didn't..." The
       young selkie started to weep.
"It doesn't matter! You're family is cursed for what she did...
       And you deserve it!"
If Lucid turned to the real Morgayne, she would see tears
       sparkling in her dark eyes.

Lucid's heart sank at the sight of all of this. She looked at
Morgayne as she had a small tear in her own eye.
"I can...um tell you are uncomfortable. Look we can leave this
all right now... We do not have to continue, you are not one of
my patients yet and this is not a proper place in the alley for
       this."

Morgayne didn't respond immediately, just kept watching.
An adult selkie suddenly came into view. "Stay away from my
daughter!" she barked angrily. The crowd reluctantly parted for
her and Morgayne's mother rushed to the young selkie's side.
"Come along," she said quietly, and the two selkies swam away.
"Don't listen to the others, my sweet Morgayne. They know
       nothing."
"But mama, they... they said our family was cursed. Is that
true?" The dreamscape seemed to still and go silent as if the
entire world was waiting for the selkie's answer.
       "Yes."
The real Morgayne looked at Lucid, holding back tears. "I'm...
       I'm done."

Lucid closed her eyes as a bright white light grew in the center
as she extended her hooves and flashed before both woke up in
the alley way. Lucid dusted herself off and took the right bag
of gems. "I'm... sorry if you saw something you didn't want to
see..." The unicorn took a few steps back from where Morgayne
was out of the reach of her hooves.

Morgayne closed her eyes tightly against the bright, almost
painful light... and then she was awake. She didn't get up
immediately, just laid there, full of thought. After a few
moments, she wearily pulled herself to her hooves. She shook her
head. "Doesn't matter. Just because I've repressed that
particular memory doesn't mean I don't have a thousand similar
to it, always at the forefront of my mind," she said with a
sigh. Her eyes met Lucid's, looking tired and melancholy. "Sorry
I tried to trick you. It was petty," she said in an empty sort
       of tone.

"It's fine, we both did things we probably regret." She
scratched the back of her head.
"You... know... I... run a town in the Everfree Forrest... If
you ever want to have some fun and relax, just walk alongside
the river just inside the entrance to the forest and you can't
       miss it."
Lucid felt bad and felt this was the least she could offer to
maybe smoothen the relationship. She felt like she had a
       connection with her.
"My name is Orchid by the way... but... those who know me call
       me Lucid."

Morgayne's tired expression shifted to one of suspicion. "The
name's Morgayne," she said shortly as she eyed Lucid. "But...
why would you want me there, at your town? As you saw..." she
sighed. "...we're not even of the same kind." She scuffed her
hoof against the cobblestones. In all honesty, she too felt some
sort of link or connection with the other mare, but she wasn't
about to admit it. She had told herself for far too long that
ponies were all the same- close-minded and judgemental.

"Who cares if we aren't the same kind?" Lucid answered. "I sure
don't... My goal in life is to make a nice peaceful world for
       everyone to live in."
