       Quiet Drinks
By: Broadshield Date: March 28, 2017, 6:57 am
       ---------------------------------------------------------
Somewhere in the quieter, darker parts of Canterlot, hidden away
from the main streets, in the back alleys is a small bar,
conveniently located near one of Montanha Citadel's many hidden
entrances and exits. The bar itself is quite small, yet cosy at
the same time. The heaters are turned on, so the room is nice
and warm. At the bar is a kindly old bartender from Neighpon
quietly cleaning up drinks. Located in a booth in a corner, at
least away from prying eyes is Broadshield, drink at his side,
       files and reports in hoof.
'Noctal numbers have increased ever since the transfer program
began... It's definitely building diversity and camaraderie
among the ranks... We've also had a spike in open recruitment
since the stand down is beginning to be removed... Good thing.
Most ponies that know about EQUINOX have been handled, one way
or another.' Broadshield thinks to himself, taking a drink
before going back to the reports. 'I need to talk to Szar about
what happened in Everfree, but that isn't happening until he
returns from Prance.' he says, before putting the current file
away and moving onto the next one. 'I can think about ranks
later. I have to sign off on all these supplies for the
soldiers...' he thinks before taking another swig and getting
back to it. 'Supplies are looking like they're in the green
across all FOB in Equestria. I'll need to direct the next few
shipments of supplies to Saddle Arabia, they're in the yellow.
Especially Nivalia's medical supplies.' he thinks to himself,
       writing down notes.
Looking up at the small TV in the corner quietly playing, he
notices a breaking news report happening in Canterlot. Something
about a stampede or chase of sorts. It didn't sound like
anything major, at least right now. Besides, he knew that if
s*** hit the fan, EQUINOX was going to move in and deal with it.
Properly this time. Satisfied that he's looked over all the
files for now, he puts them all in his saddlepacks and heads to
the bar once again, asking the bartender for another drink. He
simply nods and goes about his business, working on
       Broadshield's drink.

On another side of the bar Caleb looked exhausted as ever. He
finished his first drink slowly and looked down. This was he
found so far where the bar tender or some other sports fan
didn't ask him about why his career never panned out yet. It was
easy especially since he was in full uniform and even had his
hat on. The fans were a bit more supportive in the heart of
Ponyville but it can get brutal here. However, Caleb needed this
       night to himself.
The TV above him was playing some analyst on a sports channel
       bashing him.
"Why Ponyville signed him I have no idea! He's a BUM! A wasted
draft pick who will amount to nothing!"
He sighed and shook his head. To try and take his attention off
the TV, he glanced around the room at the other ponies.

The kindly old bartender gives Broadshield his drink, in
response, he slides over a couple of bits, covering payment and
tips as necessary. As essentially the leader of a major military
branch, he had more than enough bits to cover ALL expenses,
including EQUINOX-wide expenses and personal expenses. He then
takes a seat next to the baseball-clad pony. He pockets the rest
of his bits in his leather jacket, making sure his saddlebags
are locked and secure. With that, he goes to his drink, ignoring
the coverage about this stampede, and looking at the second TV
in the bar, continuing to talk s*** about a baseball player.
Looking to his right, he gets a better look at the pony sitting
next to him, the one in the baseball gear. The poor guy looked
like he'd been through hell and it spat him right out, and he
was drinking to at least get through it. He didn't follow
baseball, nor did he care much for it. He had bigger things on
his plate after all, mainly the security of the nation. Looking
back at the pony, he deliberated over his options before saying
to the bartender "Bartender, get the pony next to him whatever
he wants. On me." he says, the bartender simply nodding before
getting to work on his next drink. The bartender sure wasn't
gonna complain about the drinks he was serving. He was getting
       business, and getting an income.

"Hey thanks." Caleb looked over at Broad. "I don't plan on
getting drunk, just need some peace tonight."
The man on the TV continued.
"I'm more pissed that we wasted a first round pick on a guy that
didn't even try!" He barked. "I hope his career dies in
Ponyville where it belongs! A garbage franchise!"
Caleb actually chuckled at that. "Didn't try. Huh." The baseball
player then returned his attention to Broad. "So what do you do
       for a living?"

"You look like you need it." Broadshield says, as the bartender
slides another glass to Caleb, the same as what he had ordered
       before.
Broadshield paid no attention to the TV talking about a baseball
player, instead keeping an ear out to the other TV going on,
continuing their coverage on a stampede.
Broadshield's attention turns back to the baseball pony next to
him when he asks about his profession. He hesitates for a
moment, trying to think of the best way to phrase his answer.
"Military. 21st Airborne Division if you want to get into the
specifics." he said. It was a lie, but the truth wasn't
something this pony needed to hear. EQUINOX had just gotten out
of that rut of keeping down while ponies were silenced one way
or another, he didn't need the hell of going through that again.
"I'm guessing that you're a baseball player," he pauses, looking
at his uniform, and seeing that he was part of a team called the
Ponyville Dodgers, and wore the Number 18. "Ponyville Dodgers
huh? Can't say I've heard much of them. They a good team?" he
asks, trying to instigate some conversation, lest this whole
       encounter get awkward.

       Caleb caught it and nodded.
"Thanks." He took a sip before smiling at Broad. "That's really
cool. Well thank you for helping protect Equestria. You know, we
usually invite active soldiers and vets to come on the field
before the games to meet the players and even sometimes chill
       with us in the dugouts."
Caleb chuckled. "I am, believe me, I'm actually glad you don't
know who I am..." He took another sip. "They... Are a smaller
franchise. They don't have as much bits to spend on players
compared to the Manehatten Mets or anything. I'd like to think
       we are alright."

Broadshield takes a sip of his own drink before turning back to
the pony next to him. He's had quite a few drinks, but over
time, he's grown resistant to the effects of alcohol, and he can
hold quite a few drinks. Helped him in a few situations in the
past. "Thank you for your compliments. We don't get many of
those. Ponies I meet aren't usually thankful for the work we do.
Say we're just warmongers. I'd agree with them if I didn't know
what the military has to deal with. Security, safety, covert,
all that crap. I will admit, that's pretty cool that you give
some recognition to our soldiers and veterans during the
matches." he says. He wasn't lying, the military did have to
deal with horrible things so that Equestria didn't, but EQUINOX
dealt with much worse, and he'd been there since the beginning.
"Good thing I've never heard about you huh?" he says, now
somewhat confused. "I wouldn't say that. You seem like a good
enough guy. As long as you and your team are doing alright by
your standards, that's all that matters." he says, sincere in
       his comment.

       Caleb took another sip.
"Caleb Weaver." He responded. "A famous name in the baseball
world for the wrong reasons I guess. It's just nice to talk to
someone for once who didn't initiate a conversation with me to
ask why my career went to the dumps." He chuckled. "Being a good
guy unfortunately has nothing to do with me not living up to
       everypony's expectations."

"Caleb Weaver". A name was all he needed to remember a buried
memory. He never really cared much for anything that wasn't
related to security, EQUINOX, or his personal life. He heard
things from the soldiers whenever he got involved in their
conversations in the mess hall. Caleb Weaver, a baseball player,
but something negative about him that he couldn't remember at
the moment. He wants to say more but he knows better than to ask
a sensitive question like that, so he leaves it for now, but
still staying on the topic. "Didn't live up to ponies standards?
Just what did you do that pissed off so many people?" he says,
taking another drink from his mug.

"Coming out of high school I was the best player in all of
Equestria. Every baseball team ever wanted me and the one
willing to pay me the most was the Mets. Unfortunately, they
would only offer it to me if I ditched my college scholarship. I
did, and I was a first round pick in the baseball draft and I
didn't pan out the way people thought I would."
