A Link to the Past

Ebony's coffee mug sits cold and empty on his desk. The last sip
of java taken hours ago only leaves stains on the ceramic. The
Captain's eyes scan several papers, including his reports,
research, and proposals. Normally this is an every evening
thing; but tonight, a mysterious Crystal lies next to it all,
encased in a simple jar. The gem has also been displaying
unusual symptoms, what appears to be a thin aura of smoke
eminates from it. A knock on the door catches Ebony’s attention.
"Sir, your appointment is ready." With a nod, Coldsteel gets up
and gathers his things, several papers, and the jar itself.
They're tucked under his wings as he stretches, a dull pain
still making itself known from his previous injury. It wouldn't
be too much of a walk, down the hall and around the corner. He
spots two of his troops guarding the door. They salute as he
approaches them. "Sir, Princess Luna is expecting you." With a
return salute, Ebony pushes open the door and heads inside.

The night had just begun. Stars are twinkling, the Crescent moon
floating both above Canterlot on a partly cloudy evening. As
princess of the night, she has been just as busy as her sister,
her guards, and many officials throughout the kingdom. These are
trying times indeed. The news from her captain about a
tefelhunden only enforced this notion. Luna stares out into the
sky on get balcony when she hears the door open. She turns to
find Coldsteel entering. He bows as soon as he spots her.
"Captain, you may rise. It is good to see you again," Luna
states as she approaches him, "I've read your report on what
happened in Ponyville. How are your injuries coming along? Do
you think you may need some time to recover?" Although to the
public she may appear stern and stoic, to her guards and close
friends she's quite the opposite.

Ebony chuckles as he sits down, "I'll be fine, your highness.
It's not anything I can't handle. My research into this has
though." The captain retrieves the items under his wings. He
offers it to Luna, who lifts it worth her magic for a closer
look. "The crystal is indeed sketched with ancient Noctral
writing. A plus considering that there hasn't been much
derivation from our current vocabulary. What the true obstacle
is what it's saying. Some words don't match up; overall it reads
like a spell."

Luna brings the jar closer, the documents floating nearby for
later. Peering through the glass, she rotates the container
before coming to an abrupt stop. "Uh, Captain... pray thee, this
mysterious gem containing unknown magic... did thou store this
in a... pickle jar?"
"Oh uh... yes," Ebony answers, looking a tad embarrassed, "It
was the only thing I had at the time in Ponyville."
"I see." Luna confirms. Her eyes narrow as she scans the finer
details of the item in question. "Well the crystal itself is
nothing special. Tis a rather common gem used to contain magical
energy for a variety of purposes. One would require the proper
incantation to seal such magic within."

"Which could certainly mean that the etchings are just for that.
But what kind of magic needs words from a long dead language?"
Ebony asks. Things were starting to come together, but the
captain certainly couldn't predict where they are going. He
watches Luna as she further examines the stone. The lid to the
jar twists off, the Crystal itself forming an outer layer of
magic belonging to the princess herself. It levitates out of jar
and close to the alicorn. A sense of tension grips the room as
he waits for her reaction.

Luna's eyes widen as she comes to a realization. "Oh no. This,
this couldn't be... After all this time?" The princess places
the crystal back into the jar and seals it tightly. "I'm
familiar with this. Tis a dark, magical energy similar to what
Nightmare Moon had. But it's not exactly that..." She returns
the jar to the Captain, who by now surely looks troubled. "This
originated from another source. The only other thing can possess
such energy would be..." Luna finally picks up on the officer's
confusion. "Captain, have you ever been told the tale of the
Dark Comet?"

"When I was a little colt, yes," Ebony nods, "A celestial entity
that flew from the stars and crashed in Equestria before the
great migration. Legend has it that the pegasi got to it the
same time as the dragons. The comet reacted somehow and turned
the pegasi into noctrals. A myth; I mean, it hasn't stopped some
over the years to devote their whole lives to its study. In fact
I know of a family that's been researching it for generations.
However there's no concrete evidence of its existence. Even the
dozens of theories as to where it could be don't have anything
solid to back it up. It's not real... right?"

"It's real Captain. I've seen it myself," her tone is cold;
Ebony's heart drops for a moment, "Twas only once though. It was
such a long time..." Luna's voice warms up as she dives into her
thoughts. "Celestia and I had yet to establish Equestria. We
needed to gather our forces in our fight against Discord. I had
ventured south to the Badlands, my travels leading me to one of
the noctral villages." The view outside draws the princess to
her balcony. The captain himself follows, keeping some distance
between them.
"They were suspicious at first, with good reason. But once they
saw what I was, what I stood for, they were estatic. An avatar
of the night, they rallied around our cause." she glances over
to Coldsteel, "The villagers, curious in my ability, showed me
the comet. I didn't know what to make of it, and I told them.
Regardless, the village informed the others, and the noctrals
formed the Lunar Guard." Luna's horn glows as her telescope
adjusts itself in direction. "After defeating Discord, my time
was devoted to ruling our new nation. Only Starswirl the Bearded
studied it after. He found some interesting things about it
before The Dark Comet was taken by dragons. No one has known
where it's been since."

As Ebony listens in, he lightly paces back and forth. Learning
about Starswirl and his possible notes draws the captain back to
the princess, who by now is peering through her optical device.
"Alright, so we just need to get his notes on it; easy enough. A
trip to the Royal Archives won't be so bad. I'm sure we'll have
it in our hooves before lunch." Luna makes a small adjustment to
her telescope and walks back to the captain. The look of concern
in her deep, blue eyes are telling. Ebony's seen it before, and
he knows that the task at hoof will be much easier said than
done. "It's... not going to be here, will it?" She shakes her
head before pointing to her telescope. The noctral steps over
and takes a look. It's pointed at some barely distinguishable
ruins, found right in the middle of the Everfree Forest. "Of
course..." With a deep breath he returns to the princess,
nodding in confirmation at her hint. "Very well, consider it
done. I'll head over myself to make sure there's no trouble."

"T'will not be an easy trek, Captain." Luna readjusts her
telescope, the lens now reflecting the stars above. "I advise
you to venture with your most skilled troops. The Everfree is
well known for its perils, nor will the possible demonic beasts
make it any less so." The princess looks over to her desk,
neatly organized with parcels and trinkets. A tattered scroll
floats over to the two. "Here, a map of the castle. Crude, but
it should do the job. As for Starswirl's notes on the Dark
Comet, tis up to you to find."
