The Flute and the Wolf
By: Dakota Date: October 24, 2016, 11:37 am
---------------------------------------------------------
A teal pegasus crept through the shadows of the Everfree forest,
silently making her way over logs and rocks. She couldn’t stop
looking around. There were so many trees! Real trees, even
bigger than the apple ones in the orchards of Appleloosa!
Dakota’s sand-colored eyes were wide with wonder. She glanced up
at the sky, calculating the time. She must be getting close to
Ponyville. Her expression shifted to one of nervousness as she
contemplated arriving at the town, and her gait automatically
slowed. No! She needed to be brave…
Suddenly, the sound of gunfire raged through the trees, sending
animals fleeing in panic. Dakota bit back a shriek and darted
behind a nearby tree. After a few moments of silence, she
cautiously stuck her head around it to peer in the direction of
the unfamiliar noise. Dakota had never even seen a gun, much
less heard many fired at once. “What was that?” she whispered to
herself.
Just then, a putrid smell drifted past her nostrils, and Dakota
wrinkled her nose, glancing around for the source. She turned
completely around, and her jaw dropped. Standing a few feet in
front of her was what looked to be a wolf, its body made up of
branches and leaves. The timber wolf let out a low growl and
took one step towards her. Dakota instantly took off into the
air, pumping her wings in an attempt to get higher and away from
the strange creature. She didn’t get far, however. The timber
wolf reared up on its hind legs and swiped a clawed paw towards
her. It caught Dakota on her left wing, and a sharp stab of pain
shot through it. The wing clenched and Dakota fell, landing with
a THUMP! on the forest floor. She groaned slightly, her vision
swimming from the impact as the timber wolf advanced on the
downed pegasus.
She pulled herself to her hooves, fearfully staring up at the
timber wolf. Her left wing hung uselessly, three large, bleeding
gashes marring the teal feathers. Not being able to think of a
better idea, she let out a desperate scream. “HELP! SOMEBODY
HELP ME!” Her yell echoed through the forest, but she heard no
immediate response. She should be close enough for it to to be
carried to Ponyville, but there was no way to be sure. “Think,
Dakota, think!” She muttered to herself as she backed away from
the timber wolf. Suddenly her gaze brightened. Of course!
With shaking hooves, she quickly reached into her saddlebags and
pulled out her flute. She had calmed wild animals once or twice
before. Of course, she’d never attempted it with an animal this
large, but she was quickly running out of options. Balancing on
her hind legs, she started playing. She had played the same
soothing tune back in her herd, to help the young buffalo fall
asleep. The first notes were quiet and unsure, but when the
timber wolf stopped advancing and just stared at Dakota, the
pegasus started to gain confidence. She started playing louder,
and the wolf’s leafy ears flicked. After a moment, it sat down
heavily, making the ground shake. It nodded its head sleepily as
Dakota kept playing.

Fluttershy was outside working on painting a fence when she
heard the scream. She screamed as well and covered her head
before she realized it came from... oh no... inside the
Everfree. Somepony in there must really be in trouble. She
really did not want to go into the Everfree alone, but... at the
same time somepony there was clearly in a lot of trouble.
Holding back fearful tears, she grabbed a saddlebag, quickly
packed it with medical supplies and galloped into the Forrest
towards where she heard the shriek.
Fortunately, she found her rather quickly, but saw a wound and
the Timber Wolf. However, she stayed back as she appeared to
know what she was doing with the Timber Wolf. She watched as the
flute began to almost sooth the yellow pegasus as well.

The two Equinox soldiers quickly but quietly make their way
through the trees of the Everfree Forest, dodging obstacles,
leaping from elevated positions downwards until they finally
come to the clearing where the Timberwolf and two ponies are.
"Alright, this must be where that scream came from."
"Try to focus kiss-ass, we have a job to do. We have to kill
that Timberwolf before it strikes."
"Yeah, except its not attacking them, it kinda looks sleepy..."
with that, both soldiers find their eyes starting to close
slowly as the music reaches their ears, both of them try to stay
awake, but with each passing minute, its getting harder and
harder.

Dakota was completely unaware of the other ponies, focused on
her music. The rhythm of the song slowed, somehow become even
more relaxing as Dakota became lost in the melody. She closed
her eyes, swaying slightly as she played. The timber wolf let
out a large yawn, displaying several sharp teeth. The music
slowed further, and the creature laid down, closing its glowing
green eyes. Soon, the sound of deep, even breathing reached
Dakota's ears and she opened her eyes to see the timber wolf
fully asleep.
Her music slowly faded into silence, but the wolf remained
still. Dakota lowered her flute and smiled, still not seeing the
others. “You’re not so scary when you’re asleep,” she whispered
softly to the timber wolf. “You just needed a little rest, huh?”
She slowly stepped forward until she was right in front of the
timber wolf’s face. Reaching out one hoof, she gently rested it
atop the wolf’s muzzle and gave a few gentle pats. The creature
just sighed in its sleep.

Fluttershy was almost speechless. Not only was it beautiful, but
it was amazing that her music was able to calm and the wolf
asleep. "That was amazing... and so beautiful." She commented
before looking back at the wing. "I um... heard you scream and
you really need help with that wing..." She spoke very quietly
and stood at a distance. "I... Can help you.... If thats
alright."

Tracker and Ranger both manage to keep themselves awake as they
watch the pegasus put the Timberwolf to sleep, a very impressive
feat, being able to subdue a creature much like a Timberwolf
using music. "I think its safe to come out now, I don't think
that thing is going to be a threat at the moment."
"Yeah, lets go. Put your guns down." they say to each other,
before slowly putting away their guns and slowly walk out into
the clearing. "Its ok, its ok, we're friendly- Oh jeez you're
hurt pretty bad" one of the ponies says before approaching the
injured mare, checking her to see if she has any other injuries.
The other then turns to Fluttershy, who is a little ways away
from the site of the incident and says to her "Do you have any
medical gear on you, we need to use it to patch her up."

Dakota started violently, spinning around at the voice. When she
saw it was just another pony, she gave an enormous sigh of
relief. “Someone heard!” she exclaimed quietly, trying to keep
the timber wolf asleep. She started to nod, only to be startled
again by another voice. She took an instinctive step back,
accidentally stepping hard on the wolf’s paw. The creature
shifted, but Dakota was too focused on the newcomers to notice.
She looked down at her wing with an expression of surprise,
having forgot about her injuries in all the excitement. But now
that she thought about it, her wing hurt. A lot. The gashes were
still bleeding, the blood dripping down the wing and falling to
the ground. “That would be most apprecia-“
She was interrupted by a menacing growl.
Her mouth suddenly dry, Dakota turned around to see the timber
wolf slowly getting up, the lack of music finally having woken
it up. She quickly addressed the others as she stood up on her
back legs again. “Stay back!” But before she could start
playing, the wolf swiped at her forcefully. The swipe sent
Dakota flying into a nearby tree trunk, loosening her grip on
her flute and sending it into a nearby tangle of bushes. Her
head hit the tree with a painful sounding THUNK! and she
dropped to the ground. The timber wolf turned to the other three
ponies, seeming to contemplate which to go after first. After a
moment of thought, it growled again and lunged at Fluttershy.

Fluttershy gave the tiniest eep when she saw the two soldiers
approach her but slowly nodded when they asked about medical
supplies. She laid her saddle bags on the ground before the wolf
woke up. Fluttershy screamed and flew up. She was getting angry
with it.
"Excuse me! Mr. Wolf you need to calm down and stop right now!
You are hurting innocent ponies!" She scolded the wood beast.

Taken aback by the timberwolf attacking Dakota, they can't help
but watch as it lunges at Fluttershy. Thank Celestia she flew
up, otherwise that would've been an uncomfortable conversation
with Princess Twilight and her friends. "Get out of here! Go get
help!" Ranger yells out to Fluttershy before pulling out his ACR
and firing at the Timberwolf. Tracker on the other hand is
pulling out his radio, rushing to Dakota's body. "All Equinox
units in Everfree, this is Tracker. We need immediate combat and
medical assistance. Just listen for the fighting!" he says,
quickly checking over Dakota and trying to get her to wake up.
"Oh come on, wake up!" he yells, now doing a quick impromptu
medical examination to see how badly she's injured. Ranger on
the other hand is dancing a very dangerous tango with a very
angry timberwolf, dodging and sliding out of the way, followed
by a few pot shots at the abomination, slowly chipping off a few
branches before repeating the same thing. "Tracker! Can you
hurry up? I need help here!"
"Its kinda hard when you're trying to save a life!" the two yell
as they are doing their own thing, trying not to die.

The timber wolf stepped back, actually looking chastised for a
moment before its eyes blazed with anger as it threw its head
back and let out an ear-piercing howl. A howl that quickly
turned to cries of pain as Ranger shot at it. The wolf’s anger
doubling, it turned to go after the rifle-wielding stallion.
Meanwhile, Dakota was very still as Tracker yelled at her. Along
with the impact that had obviously knocked her out, a long,
bloody cut decorated one temple. Finally, the pegasus let out a
slight groan and opened her eyes. “What… what happened?” She
mumbled. As the gunfire reached her ears however, she leapt to
her hooves, swaying slightly. She blinked rapidly, trying to
clear her blurry vision as she watched the stallion raise…
something, which in turn let out a loud noise and somehow caused
bits of branches to go flying off the timber wolf. Dakota didn’t
know what this weapon was, but she hated it almost instantly as
she heard the wolf let out a particularly pained-sounding
whimper. Sure, the creature had attacked her, but it was a wild
animal! It didn’t know any better, it probably just felt
threatened!
Dakota turned to Tracker, a wild look in her eyes. “I can fix
this,” she told him desperately, then readied herself to play
her flute, only to find she was no longer holding it. “No…” she
whispered as she looked around wildly. Not seeing it on the open
ground, she made her way to the nearby bushes, in a rather
drunken manner. She started rooting through them, but her
searching just turned up hoof-full after hoof-full of twigs and
dirt. “No, no!” She started hyperventilating. Her father gave
her that flute, and if she didn’t calm down the timber wolf, it
could get killed. She had to fix this!
