Re: The Sands of Truth

Despite his best attempts to remain stoic, the look of being
startled did present itself as the chair flew across the room.
It was momentarily though, the pegasus placing his box back onto
his desk. He takes a deep breath, keeping the same tone as he
spoke, "I wish I knew Lina. When I learned of this myself I was
furious. Towards the end of the conflict, things started to make
some sense. Several months after The Hidden Daggers disappeared,
the Saddle Arabian government recruited a freelance
organization, The 26. With little assistance, they pushed back
the insurrection, and was paid handsomely for it. And finally,
at the town of Calais, the last bastion of the resistance, they
ended it. One agent... one agent went in, killed one of the two
ponies still leading them, and..." Samiel hesitates, taking off
his glasses and setting them on the desk. He sighs, explaining
what happened next won't be easy, for several reasons. "This
agent... he destroyed the dams overlooking the town... He
flooded it, everyone. I... I..." The stallion takes a deep
breath to keep his composure. "I went there myself. Friends that
I knew who lived there... all dead..."

Hearing about Calais, a wave of sorrow so strong that it drowned
out the anger washed over Lina, and she sat down heavily on the
floor. A single tear trickled down her cheek. She suddenly
flinched back from Samiel, as if expecting to get struck for her
reaction. Wiping away her tear, she automatically whispered,
“Joesong haeyo, joesong haeyo…”*
The 16-year-old mare sobbed. “They’re gone!” She wailed, and
suddenly, a grizzled old stallion standing across from the
crying Lina gave her a hard slap across the face. In her shock,
Lina stopped crying, merely holding her cheek and whimpering
slightly. “Tears will not bring them back, child,” The stallion
snapped harshly, his voice thick with a Marean (Korean) accent.
“Turn that sorrow into anger, or nothing will get done.”
Lina forced herself to turn from the memory, back to the
present. She sniffed once, then sat up straighter, refusing to
let her tears fall. She couldn’t keep the sadness from her
voice, however, as she softly said, “Samiel, I’m so sorry…”
*(Korean- “I’m sorry, I’m sorry…”)

Samiel got out of his seat; we was going to approach Lina to
comfort her, but her flinching warned him not to. His ears
simply folded back, and he turned to walk to the window. It was
strange. The city below was full of merriment, but at its heart,
vile secrets were being told. "The war ended after that. The
insurrection lost a leader, Saddle Arabia lost a part of itself.
Both sides treated bitter loss. And The 26? They got away with
it, mostly. Their agent was known as The Reaper of Calais. His
actions did bring peace to the nation, by becoming a common
villian to all." Samiel looks at the faint reflection against
the glass. "The last remaining stallion leading the resistance
became the arbitrator of the treaty. The demands of the people
were met, and now Saddle Arabia is recovering. He would oversee
the development to make sure that all parties kept their word.
He could not forget about that agent though, and he sought
revenge for it. He tracked down The Reaper of Calais to
Equestria, found that he was a Royal Guard to that nation. He
ways no time, and tried to have him killed."

Lina waited with bated breath to hear the fate of this “Reaper
of Calais”. She stood up and took a couple steps towards Samiel.
She needed to focus. “And… was he successful in killing the
agent?” And now the more important question. “And these Hidden
Daggers….” Some of the venom returned to her voice. “You say
they disappeared. You really have no idea where?”

Samiel pauses as he ponders over Lina's question. "Fate... it's
a strange thing, Lina. It never goes entirely as one plans.
However, it could achieve one's goals in ways you can never
imagine." He returns back to his desk, putting his glasses back
on he sits down. "He thought he was successful in killing him,
but found out much later on that he wasn't. After feeling that
he achieved vengeance, the stallion looked back on his actions.
His revenge, just like Calais, had collateral damage. Guards
that were with this agent died as well. Instead of feeling
satisfaction and contempt, he felt hollow, empty. No better than
the monster he sought to destroy. To this day, he meditates,
prays, and tries to forgive himself for everything he's done..."
Samiel looks Lina right in the eyes. "Everyone involved in that
war was guilty of something. Each had their own good soaked in
blood. And the best that they can do, is learn from it and hope
no such things will happen again. As for The Hidde-"
A sudden knock on the door interrupts Samiel from speaking.
Sighing, he gets up and trots over. "Excuse me, Lina. I had an
appointment set around this time. This must be them."

Lina met Samiel’s gaze without flinching. The stallion was
right; revenge had collateral damage. And revenge would not fill
up an emptiness left behind, no matter how horrid and raw that
emptiness was, and how much vengeance should help. But
sometimes, a pony had to make sacrifices. Give up their
goodness, their innocence, tarnish the very state of their soul
in order to enact justice.
And that’s exactly what Lina was going to do.
She leaned forward as Samiel started to return the subject to
the Hidden Daggers, only for a knock on the door to interrupt
him. “That’s alright,” she lied, managing to keep her
frustration from showing.

"Oh jeez, this is gonna be a bit awkward." Lima says to herself
as she adjusts the goggles around her neck. As the door creaks
open, she straightens herself out. "Oh uh, hello. My name's
Lima. I'm here for the 2:15 appointment with Mr. Sirocco?"
"Of course." Samiel replies, correct in his assumption. "One
moment please. I need to straighten something out in my office."
"Yea, take your time." The pegasus replies.
Samiel closes the door and trots over to the bits of chair
strewn about. "My apologies Lina. I have some business to attend
to. Hopefully something that won't take too much time." Picking
up whatever he could, he places it in a closet. There's
refreshments in the mini fridge if you'd like."

After its all cleaned up, Samiel lets the newcomer into the
office. "Welcome. Take a seat. What business brings you here
today?" He has already supposed the previous somber mood and
replaces it with a more friendly demeanor.
"Thanks you for taking the time to see me, Mr. Sirocco," Lima
says as she sits. "I uh, hope I'm not interrupting anything
important."

Lina gave the other pegasus a polite, but mostly disinterested,
nod, before sitting back down in the last remaining chair. She
didn't offer any reassurances at the stranger's comment, instead
gazing off and getting lost in her own thoughts. She was fully
ready to ignore the most likely boring conversation the other
two would have. She would have left already, if it wasn't for
the vital information Samiel may know- information Lina needed.

"No," Samiel answers, "Just catching up with a friend."
Lima nods. "Alright then, I'll get right to it. My name's Lima.
I'm a former agent of an organization called The 26. I'm here to
get authorization to speak with the Directors who've been
incarcerated here last month."
There's a pause in the room, the tension so thick it can sliced
like butter. Samiel's expression goes from friendly, to stern,
his tone dropping to that of slight resentment. "And what makes
you think I'd allow you, of all ponies, authorization to see
them?"
