Most of the models are bringing a fair bit of snow the next 10
days into not just the mountains of Alberta (where it is normal
for this time of year); but even the lower plains areas of
eastern and southern Alberta & southern Saskatchewan (where it
is at least 2 to 4 weeks early).
Winter may set in early in the Black Hills; time will tell.

GGEM (Canadian) with a wet snowstorm here in the Black Hills
next week (Sept 21 - 22 Fri / Sat)...6 to 9 inches of heavy wet
snow...even 3 or 4 inches down to Rapid City (elev. 3379') (That
is the NWS WFO, on the east side of the city; they do pretty
well as far as annual snowfall, about 51 to 52 inches per
season; last winter (2017-18) they measured a healthy 66.4").
       The Rapid City airport (elev. 3160') is well east of the town;
at least 10 miles; out on the Plains of western SD; their mean
snowfall is about 42 inches; they had 60.1" last winter.
Only model showing this so far; but Sept 21 here is like Nov
21st in Boston (when it comes to the start of the snow
       season)...so you never know!

The last big September snowstorm around here was 4 summers (lol)
ago; when 5.8" fell at the nearby co-op on September 11th &
12th, 2014. Custer; at an elevation of 5479', saw 7.2".

The following May (2015); that same co-op near me measured 16.3"
       of snow on the month.

Definitely wetter and colder in the Black Hills for the last 10
days of September; I would say there should be at least some
accumulating snow somewhere around here before October 1st.

Quite the September snowstorm setting up on the 12z ECMWF; with
5 inches down in Rapid City and 10 inches in the Black
       Hills...starting next Thursday, Sept 27th.

Several of the models advertising a snowstorm in that quoted
very late Thursday into Friday timeframe.
A September snowstorm would be great to see!
