No lack of rain in this vicinity; the NWS Rapid City measured
5.49" of rain in May; and 7.29" in June. Heavy thunderstorms
moved through here again this evening...just amazing how the WFO
had 17 days with measurable rain in May and 14 days with
measurable rain in June...just constant, endless thunderstorm
activity; frequent hail, thunder, and dangerous cloud to ground
       lightning.

This July I re-located from the quoted location
westbound...deeper into the Black Hills in a more rural
setting...now above the deciduous tree line and just below the
       850 mb level...my new altitude is about 4410' a.s.l.
It is a very beautiful area...and my new house is quite lovely.

More heavy thunderstorms with strong winds and hail moved
       through the area last night as August is starting out wet;
nearby Pactola Dam saw a record 8.02" of rain in July....after a
       near record 7.72" in June.

Summer is just amazingly cool here in the Black Hills @ 4410'
a.s.l. Many August afternoons have gotten no higher than the
60's; falling back into the 40's by dawn.
Usually the first flurries are seen around here in September.
October snow amounts are highly variable; but October 2013 saw
nearly 4 feet of snow that month at the nearby NWS
       co-op....including about 45" in one storm from 10/3/2013 -
       10/4/2013.

The weather has been quiet here the last 10 days or so; mostly
mild afternoons and cool nights. We are moving into autumn; and
there is a general tendency for each successive month to be
drier than the last; until the pattern reverses in February.

Severe thunderstorm just to my west at the moment (less than 5
miles); lets see if it holds together.

Starting to rain with thunder here; quite the temperature
contrast; a few miles to my NW the Dumont station (elev. 6070',
just SE of Hanna, SD) is down to 57 F while it is 80 F here.
Nemo, SD also down to 57 F (elev. 5310'...900' higher than me).

Rain has tapered off and the sky has gone partly cloudy; good
soaking rain...and much needed as it has been dry the last few
weeks; but there was no hail and not much wind...did not seem
       anything like a severe t-storm.
Temp has only fallen back to 72.3 F.
       Last night's GGEM had some wet snow in here next Tuesday (9/18);
but that's a long way off.
This area, @ 4410' and on the eastern slopes of the Black Hills,
averages *about* 0.5" of snow in September and about 6.0" in
       October.
The annual average looks to be around 75 inches; about 25 inches
       snowier than downtown Rapid City.
Lead (elev. 5213') is about twice as snowy; with an annual
average around 150"...and areas SW of Lead...such as Hanna
(elev. 5669') in Lawrence County and Deerfield Lake (elev.
5942') in western Pennington County...these are incredibly snowy
areas with means of *at least* 180". Those towns are not far
from where US Hwy 85 crosses the S. Dakota / Wyoming
border...much of this area is close to 6000' a.s.l.

From what I can tell; (as data is a little bit lacking) the
*really* snowy part of the Black Hills starts about halfway
between Silver City (elev. 4626'); an amazingly cute (and
hidden!) town on the west side of the Pactola Reservoir; I have
been there and it is quite the ordeal to take the *very* winding
mountain road that leads there; just west of US 385...AND
Rochford; which has an elevation of 5302' and is about 8 miles
       WNW of Silver City.
Temp now down to 70 F here.
