Temperature finally down to 33 F @ 3:30 AM. Took almost 2 hours
to fall one degree.
Snow has been accumulating; but you talk about marginal temps.
Had it been just one or two degrees warmer (or the daytime) and
the ground would be bare.
Very little cold air to draw on...temps are in the 30's most
everywhere...though you can see north central SD starting to
draw down some cold air out of the NE.
I think the cold was progged to move down onto the circulation
quicker...this might indicate the storm is evolving more slowly;
and it is being held back...which may bode well for more and
longer lasting precip around here.
We'll see.

Finally down to 32 F @ 4:40 AM; with light snow falling.
Will take a measurement in a little while.

At 5 AM this thing is a long way from a blizzard. I hear birds
chirping and light snow is falling. A few inches have
accumulated; but the winds are practically non-existent...and
even the main road is hard pressed to stay snow covered with
very marginal temperatures right near the freezing point.
As I wrote above, we are lucky to have had as much snow
accumulate as we have seen; another degree or so warmer and
everything would be wet & bare.
I think the "blizzard" may get get going within an hour or so...

At 9:20 PM it was 43 F and overcast.

As of 6 AM we have seen 3.2" new snow.
13.9" for April 2018.
62.0" on the season.
The NWS WFO Rapid City had 3.5" @ 6 AM.

Somehow or another we have managed to accumulate 4.9" new snow
as of 8 AM...despite terrible dendrite growth and a temp *still*
stuck at 32 F.
If the wind were any lighter in this "blizzard"...smoke would
rise vertically...lol.
April 2018 Total: 15.6"
Seasonal Total: 63.7"

5.9" new snow at Noon...very little new snow over the last 4
hours.
Neither the visibility criteria nor the wind criteria are
anywhere near being breached thus far. It has been barely a
"winter storm"....just some heavy snow showers that have piled
up a bit.

About 7.5" @ 6:45 PM. Not easy to measure; with drifting and
such. The NWS Rapid City had 9.3" at 6 PM; but they use the
snowboard method; and I do not...thus they would have a tendency
to report more than me in similar long duration events as I do
not account for settling and they do.
Nice storm; though a bit of a disappointment when thinking of
what might have been.
Certainly not a "blizzard" by any criteria; but certainly not a
bad snowfall for 13 April...just 18 days from "faire, freshe
May"...as Chaucer would say.

The NWS Rapid City finished with 9.7"; one of the highest totals
in the Black Hills area.
