Next chance of snow Wed night into Thursday; could be a decent
sized snowstorm. The GFS is very wet (read: snowy) the next 16
days; and March is the best snow month around here; April
running a close second.

February 2019: One for the record books
The mean at Pactola Dam was 10.6 F for February 2019; the
coldest month ever recorded there.
The mean at NWS Rapid City was 10.0 F; the 3rd coldest February
and 6th coldest month ever recorded there....records go back to
the 19th century and there were several station locations.
Since all colder months were recorded from 1937 and before; it
was the coldest month there in 82 years and the coldest month
ever at the actual weather office current site.
The mean at Rapid City Airport was 8.7 F; the coldest February
ever there and the 3rd coldest month ever recorded there.
Wow...
Note how the further east you go AND the lower your elevation;
the progressively colder it got...as I have often writen; cold
air is shallow and sometimes has trouble reaching the Black
Hills; setting up an inversion; I had several days this month
where afternoons were tolerable in the 20's and 30's while way
out east at the airport the temps stayed in the single digits in
the middle of the day.

of the month)...I would not be surprised if they end up setting
a record for the coldest February ever at the WFO.

Good forecast; as usual Pammy!

It is -11.9 F here @ 6:09 AM...there is refreshing cold; and
then there is unpleasant cold...I think this falls under the
latter category...lol.
Coldest nearby reading was -20 F @ Cheyenne Crossing.
Coldest reading (I could find) in the Northwest overall was -38
F @ Miles City , Montana.
I do believe the real severe cold is finally going to ebb; as
that strong March sun cannot be denied; and after Monday
(tomorrow)...the really unpleasant cold may be over and done
with...I am speaking of sub zero cold at night and temps failing
to get above 15 F during the daytime hours.

I think we bottomed out here @ -12.5 F...which will hopefully
not be replicated until next December; at the earliest...lol.
Monday morning will be very cold as well; though maybe a
fraction less harsh.

Finally on the right side of the ledger; up to +1.0 F @ 10:15
AM, March 3rd, 2019.
Brilliant sunny skies; but still a good day to stay inside.

March and April are the two snowiest months of the year in the
Black Hills; so I would expect to improve those numbers
considerably by May 1st. May also features measurable snow in
most years; in May 2015 most of the area saw 1 to 2 feet of
snow.
