Snow started in earnest at 10:10 AM Sunday morning and has
continued at a good moderate pace ever since. Accumulating
quickly.
It is raining down in the Rapid City with a temp around 36 F to
37 F...but it has been all snow here with the mercury right near
freezing.
Elevation really helping today...I am about 1200' above Rapid
City.

The storm total was 4.5".
We had on and off snow for about 32 hours.
We finished December 2018 with 14.1 inches of snow; not a bad
amount.
The season to date total (with the close of business for 2018 a
few hours away) is up to 27.4 inches; again not bad...as climo
would have the amount around 23.5".
This was achieved through 14 separate measurable events; i.e.
snows of 1/10th of an inch or more.
The ground has been well covered with snow on 43 days through
today since the snow season began in the autumn.
It was a very cold day here in the Black Hills; and the current
temp @ 7:42 PM is 5 F.

Frigid this morning; low of -3.5 F.
That station right near Rochford down to -12.8 F; and Cheyenne
Crossing fell to -17 F.
Impressive cold to start the New Year.

Quick comment on the other board...the unmitigated arrogance of
several of the posters...and one in particular..."guaranteeing"
(lol) a severely snowy winter...with close to 100 inches of snow
just north of Boston.
Though they have been essentially snowless this winter; save for
a fluke November event...the outlook is not going as planned.
Those expecting contrition from the prognosticators would not
find it; they have only dug their heels in deeper.
The absurd reliance on scores of not entirely understood
indexes...El Nino...La Nina...Madden Julian
Oscilliation...NAO...AO...or how they might interact...is
laughable.
First Iron Rule of Forecasting: You Can't Fight Climatology
Every single index may appear to be in a favorable position; but
if your area is a hellhole for snow; odds are; it will not snow
there...or at least not much.
Conversely; if a town is a good snow town; every index may
appear to be aligned unfavoraby; but it will still find a way to
snow there.
That is not to say that we discount or dismiss the study of
these indexes or their various potential abilities to influence
sensible weather...but they are mere tools; and not a means to
an end...they hint that a region may be more or less predisposed
to a particular anomaly (wetter, drier, colder, warmer) for a
particular interval...but the bottom line remains the same: the
climate record of a particular location is the all-controlling
element as to future potential weather.
Every index may look great for snow; but I assure you...that
will not turn National Airport in D.C. into Burlington,
Vermont...and the reverse is likewise true.

Southern New England and Long Island have had some absurdly
snowy winters since the early 1990's...and especially
post-2000...and this has caused "forecasters" (lol) to embrace
the misapprehension that the recent anomaly represents a "new
normal" (lol).
Suddenly; Logan Field has transmuted into Broome County Airport
in the Collective Conscious of these prognosticators.
These individuals; terribly short-sighted beings that they are;
cannot see the Big Picture; all they do is worship at the altar
of the Here & Now...
The Plain Truth is that the Real Climate lies somewhere in the
middle...not as snowy as the Recent Era...and not as snowless as
the 1970's and 1980's.
I speak of average weather over an extended interval...the heart
of climatology...and the weather forecaster's best friend.

Cold evening here; temp 8.6 F @ 8:48 PM...but a good deal colder
down at the Rapid City Airport...where they were already down to
-2 F at 8 PM.
The old rule of colder air pooling in valleys during
anticyclonic evenings...while warmer air is found the in the
hilltops...called an inversion.
KRAP radiates very well...
As a general rule; the general tendency is for an overall temp
decrease from west to east across SD; though the altitude
increases as one heads west.
This is because arctic anticyclones are shallow; and the air has
trouble reaching higher altitudes. We see; many times; the
battle zone between mild Pacific Air and frigid polar air masses
set right up along the Front Range of the Rockies or the Black
Hills themselves. Morever; the general track of polar air
masses is often to the east of Rapid City.
