Cold this morning; temp down to about 9 F.
Big temp range across the area; -1 F @ Cheyenne Crossing (which
is SW of Lead and one of the coldest, snowiest spots
around)...but still some mid 20s down in Rapid City.

One thing about the Black Hills...even in bad patterns; the
precipitation gravitates here like nowhere else in the Northern
Plains; almost like a magnet...any direction you go away from
here...there is a drop off.
Buffalo, SD...about 105 miles NNW of Rapid City; has like 55% of
the year to date precip. total as the NWS WFO Rapid City has as
of today. (About 27" to 15"; IIRC).
As the earlier posts show; I resided on a low hill on the west
side of Rapid City last winter @ 3465'..(about 200' above the
downtown area)...and we still managed 37 separate measurable
snow events; (events of 0.1" of snow or greater)...yielding a
seasonal total of 66.3"...really not a bad total for being in a
bit of a rain shadow on the East Side of the Black Hills.
Although I absolutely love my new house deeper in the B.H.'s; I
will always have very fond memories of the year I spent in that
house on the low hill above Rapid City...the views of the city
to the east and the mountains to the west were absolutely
spectacular.

Cold this morning; temp down to about 3 F here.
About 16 F for a low at the WSO in Rapid City...colder out at
the airport.
Good UHI in downtown Rapid City.
I'm not in the coldest spot in the Black Hills; but it is still
pretty chilly. Also, being on the East Side; those arctic
anticyclones that dive out of the Prairie Provinces clip this
area with a little more efficacy than locales on the west side.
It is around -9 F at Cheyenne Crossing and -8 F at Hill City;
but in the mid teens above zero up at Lead...which also
generates a decent UHI...it is a pretty fair sized town as far
as places around here go. Also, Lead is on a hilltop...and
cold air; being heavier, pools in valleys during clear, calm
(anticyclonic) conditions...so an inversion is likely in play
there.

What a perfectly marvelous snowstorm today for much of western
North Carolina, extreme eastern Tennessee and most of the
southern two thirds of Virginia...absolutely outstanding...and
what a cruel cut-off just south of the Washington DC
area...where they will see nothing more than a flurry.
When it comes to snowstorms; the District of Columbia is a
screw-zone extraordinaire; never have I seen a location find
ways to miss snow like that town does.

We haven't seen measurable snow here since 4 December; quite an
arid stretch...and we have been stuck at 18.1" on the season.
The ground has been more than half bare since 17 December...
Some changes in the works; some light snow seems likely Monday
evening; and then some heavier snow should develop Tuesday
evening.
After that; a cyclone is forecast to deepen over the Central
Plains; we may be too far west in the Black Hills to derive the
benefits of the majority of the moisture; but if it tracks a
little further west; we might get into some substantial snows
continuing right through Friday morning.
