What a nightmare! Hill City (elev. 4977'...just 567' higher
than here)...has 4 inches plus and counting.
It has snowed steadily and heavily here for at least 8 hours;
and would not accumulate; except a small amount on scattered
areas outside; as the temperature never got under 33.6 F.
We are probably no more than 200' below the heavy accumulating
snow line.
Amazing and mond-boggling; but maybe not...when I think back on
all of it...right back to the beginning.

Pactola Dam (4724')...just 314' higher than here...with 1.7" so
far.

Props to the NWS Rapid City; who wrote in their forecast
discussion that the cutoff for good accumulations would be
around 5000'...practically a spot on forecast.

We'll call it 1/10th of an inch of snow here; same total for the
month and the season. The temp. is now up to a balmy 36.5 F and
it is all over but the crying.
If what happened with this storm is any harbinger of the Coming
Winter; just stop the world now...I want to get off.

There were three reports from the area around Deerfield Lake
(far western Pennington County) of between 6 and 7 inches of
snow. Not surprising; the area is up around 6000'...and has a
mean annual snowfall close to 180" / 15 feet. They are off to a
good start...lol.
That is not a built up area at all; close to uninhabited...I
have never even been there...but I think that you can only get
there on an unpaved road. Will have to double check on that.
Lead only had 1.5"; as I have written; though an excellent snow
town; there are several areas a good deal snowier south and
southwest of Lead.

I would not discount the warm ground as a Huge Factor...it
snowed beautifully; I mean really well for about 9 hours
straight...and often it will accumulate with a temp of around 34
F; at least on grass...but after a warm summer; quite a bit of
heat pent up in the ground.

next 384 Hours / 16 Days.

The barrage of snow should begin in earnest very late Saturday
evening or early Sunday morning...
I am *definitely* going to have to stock up on food and drink
before the weekend...

This is going to be a major, major problem in the Black Hills
over the next week or so...maybe reminiscent of the October
blizzard from 5 years afore; which put down 58 inches @ Bear
Ridge; 55 inches @ Lead; and 44.6 inches at the beautiful (and
nearby!) Pactola Dam!
