My world never had a chance to fight... We lost before we even
realized there was a war going on.
My name is Kindron Darkfire, and my world was taken over by a
race of nanotechnology I came to call the "Rewriters."
This race took over my world, and I assume my entire universe. I
do not know the extent of their control. I do know they rewrite
entire worlds as their nanotechnology replicates and spreads.
Thankfully, though, it takes many, many years to fully transform
a planet.
But they are now invading another universe where I went to try
and find help. And this time, I'm trying to find people who can
help me stop them. I have to stop them and find a way to destroy
them.
They are among you. You can't even recognize them because of
their technology.
They use electromagnetic signals to influence your mind. You
don't even recognize the technology or people they rewrite as
different. You see the technology, the people with metallic
parts or other cybernetics. But you don't recognize it as
abnormal. You just think it's part of their natural look. You
don't even think for an instant that they've been changed.
Most people cannot recognize the Rewriters. TV, photos, anything
can be rewritten to broadcast those signals. Even on TV, or in
photos, the Rewriters are there, and people don't even realize
it. And best believe they use that to their advantage.
They aren't people. They're nanotechnology in the form of people
and items that have been turned into a mass of nanotech forming
physical shapes.
They isolate people, and then inject the nanotechnology into
them. Once in the body, it replaces the cells until all that is
left are the nanotechnology.
That's why I call them the Rewriters... Because they literally
rewrite everything they replace.
They hide in plain sight thanks to their technology.
But there is hope. There are random people who are immune to the
electrical signals they give off. They call them "See-ers." And
no, not seers as in people who see the future. See-ers, as in
they see the truth. They see the technology modified people and
objects and aren't fooled by the disguise.
Not even the Rewriters know how people can be see-ers. Which is
a good thing for me and for the see-ers because they can't
predict them or figure out who is and isn't one unless they see
how they react, or they infect one.
It is theorized that the see-ers are a result of people who have
trouble absorbing the signals that the Rewriters send through
their technology. Normally, the signals are transmitted through
the air or from technology, and then the nervous system carries
the signals to the brain where the brain is affected depending
on what the signal wants. But the see-ers don't actually process
those signals. Or they can react despite those signals. No one
knows for sure.
I am trying to track down all the see-ers I can before its too
late and another universe is taken over.
Because they are here, and they are among you.
If you see someone who people don't react to, but you can tell
they're wrong, don't react. Don't show them you can see through
their disguise. Because if they figure it out, they will hunt
you. And then they will rewrite you like they do everything
else. But they'll come after you first.
And once they infect you, it's all over. You'll be rewritten and
you'll be one of them.
Because you're the only thing that can stand in their way.
The only comfort is that when they replace you, you won't be
alive anymore. When they overwrite you, they become you, but you
will die in the process.
But it's almost a fate worse than death. Because you have to
feel all your memories disappear little by little. To feel
yourself fading away...
We must stop them. And the see-ers are our only hope.
Help us fight them. If you can recognize the threat, you may be
one of the see-ers.
I am trying to guard their ways into your world so that they
can't gain a foothold, but I'm losing ground.
Soon, their invasion will truly begin. And your world will fall
as easily as mine did.
Gather anyone who can see past their appearance and find us.
Before it's too late...
Main Story:
Opening Fight: Demon (
HTML https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YBdtzQWCvSU
)
Kindron fired needles from his wrist device on his wrist and the
needles exploded in the faces of the Rewriters who were
attacking him.
The Rewriters were sending their drones, converted humans, to
take out threats, and Kindron had responded by fighting back.
Kindron then turns and points his mechanical arm to fire at the
others who were attacking from his other side using the blaster
attachment on his mechanical arm.
Kindron looks around, but doesn't see one coming up behind him.
As Kindron turns around just in time and gets ready to draw his
sword, the drone is shot with an energy gun from the side.
Kindron turns to see his friend and ally, Belle Johnson, who had
shot the drone.
Belle: I got your back. She says as she puts her gun away and
walks over.
Kindron: Thanks. But I had him.
Belle: You said it's risky letting them get close because they
can infect you. I figured killing him before he got close would
be better.
Kindron smiles a bit. He puts his hand to his face, making sure
the head wrappings and his headphones that covered the top of
his head and his eye hadn't come loose during the fight. The
head wrappings covered most of his head, while the headphones
were meant to filter out noise.
Kindron: You're right. I guess when you put it that way, I
should be thankful. He says, smiling a bit.
Belle and Kindron look, as the nanotech seems to dissolve after
being destroyed, while some of it tries to come together to form
a complete form.
Kindron and Belle both shoot the nanites with their respective
energy weapons side by side (Kindron with his mechanical arm's
wrist canon and Belle with her energy pistol).
Once it was down and fully dissolved like the other nanites,
Kindron and Belle leave the area.
Belle: It's a really good thing that these things clean
themselves up. If I had to explain every one of these things
I've killed, I'd never know what to say. She says jokingly.
Kindron chuckles at her joke.
Kindron: Yeah. And it's a good thing we can use their tech
against them. I can't imagine how useful we'd be if we didn't
have these weapons. He says, patting his sword at his side.
Though he was also referring to his wrist device on his right
wrist, and the blaster attached to his mechanical left arm.
Kindron and Belle return to their base of operations, where they
were watching the forefront of the Rewriter's attempt to set up
a foothold in Belle's universe.
Once they were in their home, they both go about their normal
routine after missions.
- After the Mission Theme: Penal Hero (
HTML https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D5nBr1WxeHU
)
Belle went straight to the kitchen and began making dinner.
Meanwhile, Kindron went into his room and shut the door.
Kindron takes out a black notebook from a black binder and opens
the notebook.
The notebook, which was actually Rewriter tech, glowed as the
holographic pages showed.
Kindron puts his hand on the notebook, recording today's
memories into the notebook.
This notebook was his personal journal, which Kindron used to
keep notes.
Ever since this war had started, Kindron had always stopped to
record memories after each mission, something he did alone.
Ever since he had come to this world, he had spent a lot of time
with Belle, and the two currently lived together in order to
best coordinate on how to fight the Rewriters.
Belle was a see-er, one of the only ones that Kindron had found
so far. So far, it had been Belle and Kindron fighting the
invasion by themselves. While they were holding their own for
now, they knew that they would lose if nothing changed.
Kindron thinks to himself. Remembering when he met Belle, as he
looks over past entries in his notebook.
When it came to Rewriter tech, items rewritten weren't actually
sentient, but were nanotech of the Rewriters that had been used
to replace items and give the items new functions. That was good
for Kindron and Belle, as they were able to utilize Rewriter
tech, but it was also dangerous because if the Rewriters ever
figured out a way to rewrite the items again, they could
essentially control the items.
Kindron's sword gave a signal that made it so people didn't
recognize it was a weapon he was carrying around. Even though
people saw it, they would react to it the same way someone would
to a pencil.
Kindron had other tech, like his mechanical arm, which gave off
a similar signal to make people think it was just his regular
arm. Though people saw his mechanical arm and could likely see
the wrist canon on his arm, they just react to it similarly to
how someone might react to a wristwatch.
Belle was the only one who could see past the items to see the
tech and the Rewriters true selves, rather than the "disguise"
they normally had behind their electromagnetic signals.
Kindron, lost in thought, didn't even hear the TV come on, or
the voices on the TV that were talking to Belle.
And he barely had time to come back to reality when Belle came
storming into his room.
Kindron: Belle! What are you doing?! He asks, surprised that
Belle would come in when she normally knocks first.
Belle crosses her arms and looks to Kindron.
Belle: Take off that wrapping on your head. You can keep the
headphones on if you want. I know they're important for
filtering out noise. She says to Kindron.
Kindron looks to her curiously.
Kindron: Why? What are you wanting to know? He asks her.
Belle just looks to him with a surprisingly cold look that
Kindron never saw from her.
Belle: I need to know... That you're not one of THEM. She says
simply.
Kindron sighs.
Kindron: You want to see? So be it. He says as he slowly takes
off the wrapping that he kept his head wrapped in.
Once off, Belle stopped in shock, putting her hands over her
mouth. Her eyes widened with realization as she saw the truth.
Kindron looks to her. His eye normally covered could be seen
now, and Belle could see that it was a mechanical eye.
Kindron had a metal plate coming out of his head, and devices
coming out of the area around his ear.
Belle: You... are one of them! She says, gasping.
Kindron sighs and looks down at his notebook.
Kindron: Yes. I'm infected. He says. The nanotech has been
slowed, but it doesn't stop the change, or undo the change
that's already happened. He explains.
Belle: How can I trust you? If you're one of them... Why didn't
you tell me?
Kindron sighs.
Kindron: You shouldn't trust me. The day will come when I may
become one of them for real. He says. He holds up his notebook.
That's why I record my memories in this notebook. Because I know
that when it overwrites my brain, I'll lose those memories. He
sets the notebook down. If I stop them... Then maybe my death
won't be in vain. He says in a sad tone.
Belle stops, absorbing the information.
Belle: You're not fully one of them, but you're infected. She
says as she sits down. From what you told me, it's impossible to
stop right?
Kindron nods.
Kindron: So far, yes. It can only be slowed, not stopped. If we
find a way to stop the infection, or even reverse it... He
shakes his head. No. I don't think I can be optimistic enough to
want to reverse it. Would those who are converted back even be
themselves anymore?
Belle looks to him.
Belle: Why do it? Why fight? She asks.
Kindron takes out the binder and opens it. He shows it to her.
When she looks at it, she starts to tear up.
Kindron gets a solemn look.
The inside of the binder was signed by all of Kindron's friends
and family.
Kindron: You want to know what I'm fighting for? For them. He
says confidently. He then gets a solemn look again. Even if
they're gone. Fully replaced by the Rewriters.
Belle covers her mouth again.
Belle: So... How did... it happen. She says, pointing at
Kindron's head.
Kindron sighs as he tells his story to her. It was the first
time he'd talked about the full story since it happened.
Begin Flashback.
Flashback Theme: Sentenced to be a Hero Xylo Version (
HTML https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zB04js5S5Po
)
I was in the hospital. I had gotten sick, and I was recovering.
I had spent over a month in the hospital. They said I was lucky
to be alive.
When I got out, I went home. And then I went to visit my mother
and father.
When I got to their house, my mother greeted me.
See-ers can see through the Rewriters disguises...
Unfortunately, I wasn't a see-er... So I didn't see it coming.
My mom injected me in the neck with the nanites while my back
was turned.
When they started affecting me, I could then understand that my
mother had been rewritten by them...
I tried to run as I could feel parts of my head being converted.
And thankfully, my dad caught me.
But with one major problem... My dad was infected too. Not
completely rewritten, but he was in the process just like I was.
Turns out, my father was a see-er. He only got infected because
he noticed my mother had been replaced with a Rewriter and
didn't realize that no one else could see through their
'disguise'.
But my father did manage one thing... He injected me with his
own nanotech. Nanotech designed to slow the conversion process.
My father was an expert in nanotech, and he must have come up
with it specifically to slow his own conversion.
My father tried it on himself, but he was too far converted for
it to work. It worked on me only because I wasn't as converted
as he was.
The last thing he did for me was give me a notebook and the
binder. He told me to record everything about the Rewriters and
their technology. Maybe I'd be able to figure out how to stop
them.
My father's mind had started to see into the connection of the
Rewriters. His mind was melding with them and he told me their
goal: They want to automate everything in the universe with
their nanotechnology until everything is automated like they
are. They even want creation and destruction to become an
automation they can control.
He told me to run and find a way to fight back. He couldn't come
with me. Or else he'd become a threat to me.
Our world fell not even knowing it was under attack.
I was one of the last ones. I hid from them and came to this
universe. I hoped I'd find the answer to stopping them here.
In the end, everyone I know and love is dead... Replaced by the
Rewriters.
And if they are destroyed, I will have to be destroyed too...
Because I will become one of them eventually.
This is the first time I've actually mentioned this to anyone.
It's hard to think about, because the memories, the betrayal by
what I thought was my mother, the despair of seeing my father
practically give everything up for me.
I was broken... And I almost gave up because I didn't see any
way to win.
End Flashback.
Belle: So... You're the reason they invaded our universe? She
says to him.
Kindron looks to her.
Kindron: Actually, no. They were already researching other
universe travel, and I actually used their portal device to come
here to this universe. They were already intending to invade
this universe.
Belle sighs.
Belle: I'm sorry. I didn't know you were carrying all this.
Kindron stops as he asks a question he was curious about.
Kindron: Belle. What made you ask this? You came in here knowing
what to look for.
Belle: They sent a signal through the TV a little while ago.
They told me you're one of them. She explains.
Kindron stands up and grabs his weapon.
Kindron: They sent a signal here?! That means they know where we
are! He says as he stands up in a panic.
Belle realizes she messed up as she runs to her room.
Belle: I'm so sorry! I didn't even think about it!
Kindron grabs his notebook and puts it in the binder.
Kindron: They must be trying a psychological attack since we've
been beating the drones. They must have counted on you being
angry at me for not telling you this all sooner! He says
desperate as he runs out of the room into the living room.
But it was too late...
The door bursts open as three drones walk in.
The Drones Theme: Guisarme (
HTML https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lHoFnm6VwSg
)
Kindron stops in his tracks. He could feel something off about
these drones compared to the others he'd fought.
Not only that, it was like his mind was jumping. Almost like he
couldn't think straight. And Kindron has a suspicion why... If
they knew he was infected, they probably hacked the nanites in
his head.
Kindron: No... You weren't trying to psychologically attack. You
were... trying to stall us, weren't you? He says in a low tone.
You were hoping we'd be here when you attacked us.
The drone in the middle steps forward, who was the leader. The
man appeared to be an adult male, even though his outfit had
metallic parts, and his skin also had metallic parts of it. It
was a common Rewriter trait, where they always had parts that
were entirely mechanical. Those mechanical parts were usually
areas where the nanobots were produced and spread throughout the
body, or they sometimes were parts that held certain functions,
like a mechanical eye that could analyze things.
Drone: Indeed. The plan worked as expected. Emotions hinder your
sense of logic and reason. It said to Kindron.
Kindron: Fine. Then I'll kill the three of you and we'll escape.
He says as he lifts his mechanical arm to fire his wrist canon.
However, when he tried, nothing happened.
When nothing happened, Kindron shook his mechanical arm a bit,
and tried again.
Kindron: What's going on?! A malfunction?! He says to himself.
Drone: That arm is part of you. And now that we know you are one
of us, we can hack you. We just have to finish your conversion.
He says as he steps forward.
Kindron takes out his sword.
Kindron: Then affect this! He says as he tries to stab the drone
in the chest with his black sword.
However, the sword barely goes deep into the body of the drone,
and the drone grabs the blade and crushes it in his hand. He
then pulls the part of the blade out that was stabbed into him.
Drone: We know your combat style and your abilities. We modified
our combat data specifically to counter you. He says as he steps
forward. Come with us. Your conversion must be finished... And
it will be, whether you want it to or not.
Kindron drops his broken sword and thinks.
Kindron: Should I use the explosive shots from my other wrist?
No. I'd bring the whole house down on us... What can I do? He
thinks to himself desperately, trying to come up with a plan.
Before Kindron can say anything out loud, Belle fires her energy
pistol at the two, and knocks them down. However, the pistol
didn't destroy them like the previous drone models, as it seemed
these drones were also resistant to Belle's weapons.
Belle runs over and grabs Kindron's hand. She then drags him
toward one of the rooms.
Belle: We have to run! If they can't be hurt by you, we have to
retreat! She says to Kindron.
Kindron runs with her, but in his head, his mind was running
through multiple scenarios.
Once in the room, Belle fires at the window and wall, in order
to make a hole to escape from.
Kindron runs with her, and the two jump out and run for the
street.
However, the three drones destroy the door to the room, and walk
quickly towards Kindron and Belle.
Kindron: I can attack now! He says as he lifts his wrist and
fires explosive metal needles from his wrist device, which blow
up in the faces of the drones.
On top of the drones being stunned, the house comes down on top
of them as the explosions take out the support.
Kindron and Belle run, but turn back to look as they do.
And for Kindron, what he saw horrified him.
The drones seem to break out of the house almost immediately,
with only a little bit of dust on them. As the three break out,
they start running toward Kindron and Belle who continue
running, as though they were ready to capture them by any means
necessary.
Kindron: We can't outrun them. He says to himself.
Just then, a car pulls up and a man fires an energy gun at them,
which knocks them down.
- Rescue Theme: Shouri (
HTML https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Nn8NzfeRGb0
)
Man: Come with me if you want to live! He says to Kindron and
Belle.
Belle: A Terminator reference?! Really? She says bitterly. She
then looks back and notices the drones getting back up. You know
what? Forget it! I'll take it! She says sarcastically as she
opens the door and forces Kindron into the back seat with her as
she shuts the door.
The man drives off, with the three drones trying to run after
them.
The man then opens up his glove compartment and throws out what
looks like a grenade out the window at the drones except that it
was blue instead green like most grenades.
When the drones see it, they stop and try to move away, but it
was too late. The grenade explodes in a burst of electricity,
creating an EMP that even made Kindron's head hurt despite the
fact they were getting farther away from the grenade explosion.
Belle looks out the back window, seeing the drones freeze in
place from the EMP.
Kindron and Belle look in astonishment at the fact the drones
were frozen, and then back at the man.
Kindron: You can tell what they are, can't you? You're a
see-er! He says, analyzing the man.
Man: I don't know what that means, but yes... I'm the only one
who can see these things for what they really are. He says.
Belle: You're like me! A human who can see through their
signals! She says, happy to finally have someone else on their
side.
Though Kindron was a lot more cautious.
The man continues driving, speeding as much as he could to try
and put as much distance between him and the drones as they
could.
Kindron: How did you know we were in trouble? He asks
suspiciously.
Man: I intercepted the signal they sent about you. He says,
looking to Kindron before back to the road as he drives. "The
one you travel with is one of us." You are one of them, aren't
you?
Kindron, in silence, looks away.
Instead, Belle leans forward and looks to the man.
Belle: Yes, but he's not fully converted yet. He's not a danger
to us.
Kindron: Yet. He says quietly.
The man nods.
Man: That's good. If we have a sample of them, we can study what
they are. Maybe we can even reverse what they've done to you.
Kindron looks to the man.
Kindron: I don't want it reversed. When the Rewriters are gone,
I plan to destroy myself too so they will be destroyed
completely! He says confidently.
Belle looks to Kindron, horrified.
Belle: No! You can't die! If there's a possibility... She says,
but hesitates as she wasn't sure what to say.
Man: First, catch me up? I need to know what we're up against.
Start with why no one can tell they're abnormal.
Kindron: It's the signals their nanotechnology sends. It affects
the brain using electromagnetic waves that create artificial
responses in the brain.
Man: Explains why I'm not affected. I guess the nanotech already
in me must have adapted and cut out their signals. He says.
Belle: Wait, if you can block their signals, does that mean we
can equip others to do so?
Man: I hope so. He says quietly.
Man: By the way... My name is General Winre. Call me M. He says
to them as he continues driving.
Belle: Oh. I'm Belle and this is Kindron. Kindron is from the
same universe those things are from.
M: They're from another universe? That makes a whole lot more
sense. He says somewhat bitterly as though he were wondering why
he hadn't figured it out sooner.
Kindron: It doesn't matter. We can't win. They've adapted to us.
And soon they'll adapt to you too. They're just too advanced. He
says in a solem tone.
Belle: Don't say that, Kindron! We can win! We have a real shot
now!
Kindron: These aren't normal mechanical aliens, Belle! They
don't use Binary, they use a code that is more complex than
anything humans have ever done! And humans can't even travel to
other worlds! We have no chance of stopping them if they have
the means to take over this universe too!
M: I agree with your friend, my boy. Don't give up hope. We can
stand between them and our world. If we know what they are and
figure out a way to stop their conversions, we can beat them.
Kindron: You don't get it. now that they know I'm one of them,
they're going to try and speed up my conversion. And once I
become one of them... He says, stopping short and clutching his
notebook with tears in his one normal eye (since the other was
mechanical).
M: I've done a lot of research into nanotechnology, kid. And I
have a bunch of nanotech infused into me. Not nearly as
dangerous as the things you call "Rewriters," but if I can
figure that out, I can figure this out too. If we just figure
out a way to neutralize their ability to hide, we can fight
back.
Kindron: You don't know how complex they are. Their tech isn't
just 1s and 0s. They use the entire numerical spectrum in their
code. And it's not just about how they line up. Codes and
patterns, as well as physical locations of the code change it
entirely. They can even lines of code overtop each other. Not
only that, but their code changes 3D space. Their code is far
too complex for a race like ours who haven't even mastered 1s
and 0s. He explains quickly.
Kindron then feels something and clutches his head in pain as he
starts hearing signals in his head.
Belle grabs Kindron, trying to calm him as he screams in pain.
Belle: Kindron! What's wrong?!
Kindron: It's them! They're sending a signal and I can hear it!
He says, gritting his teeth in pain.
M: What does the signal say? Is it about us?
Kindron: No... It's not. He says as he tries to focus on
blocking the signal out of his head. I'm sorry. I'm okay. Just
give me a moment to focus so I can block it out. He says as he
focuses.
M: Kid, can you access their network? If you can, we can hack
their network.
Kindron: I could... But if I let them in, I won't be able to get
them out. He says as he focuses on blocking out the signal.
That's partly why I wear the headphones. They're special tech
designed to block out the noise I don't want to hear. But it
can't block out the signals from the tech already in my head. He
explains.
M: I understand. It's for the best then. He says with a nod. Can
you tell me what you do know about the signal you were able to
sense? Anything helps.
Kindron regains his composure.
Kindron: It was a retreat signal... The Rewriters were attacking
another planet in this universe. And they said something about
waking something up. They were afraid of whatever they awoke. He
explains. Sorry, but that's all I got.
M: Something even these things are afraid of? I don't like the
sound of that. Waking something up is usually bad news. In my
experience, something sleeping is usually sleeping for a reason.
He says.
Kindron: I agree... And usually sleeping things get cranky when
they're forced to wake up. He says with a nod.
Kindron may have escaped the Rewriters for now, but he was left
wondering...
How can he fight what is already inside of him? And can he stop
his own assimilation into the Rewriters?
And what had the Rewriters woken up? What had them retreating?
Since it was on an alien world, it could have been anything.
Kindron knew that even with a new ally, their chances of winning
were slim. But he wanted to hope that they could win... Even if
deep down, he didn't believe it was possible.
How would the arrival of M Winre change their fight? And what
will happen now that the Rewriters know Kindron is one of them?
The war had just begun for this universe... And it may not just
be the Rewriters that they have to worry about...

In the Rewriter universe however, something else was happening
as well...
A drone stands in front of an army, and looks to a drone in the
shadows.
Drone: You will take command of our next wave. Find the one who
escaped conversion, and finish his conversion. And make sure any
and all see'ers are found and converted.
The drone in the shadows steps out, revealing itself to be Qrow
Darkfire, Kindron's father who now seemed to be fully converted
into a Rewriter. He bows forward a bit to the drone.
Qrow: So the hive commands. So shall it be. He says as he walks
and motions to the army to follow him as a portal opens up and
he walks forward.
Before he walks through, he says something in the Rewriter
language which translated roughly to "All will become Us." An
ominous declaration of war as he walked through the portal...
End.
