Drone Profile: Martha
By: Raven Tepes Date: November 17, 2024, 4:40 pm
---------------------------------------------------------
Name: Martha
Robotic Type: Flight Drone
Age: 1 month old
Organization: Global Dynamics
Abilities:
Impenetrable Hull: Though not invincible, Martha's hull is put
together like a missile. Without opening the pressure sensitive
access plate, one would have to blast with enough shots to open
her up or shrink between the atoms.
Sentient Artificial Intelligence: Martha is a learning computer
AI, but has advanced "from toddler to teenager overnight." The
result is an angry, unpredictable young consciousness lashing
out at attempts to control her. The user either is or can
mimic/transform into an artificial intelligences (AI). They
usually have the ability to control nearby technology and
sometimes possesses it. The user may be able to control
technology to as far as to possess a mechanical armor. Martha
can control the other drones within her squadron.
Empathic Weapon: The Empathic Weapon has a mind of its own, and
reacts to the feelings of the people around it. It only allows
one person to wield it. The weapon acknowledges the hero's
desires and good qualities, and is willing to help him out. The
hero also tends to treat (and even talk to) it as if it were a
person of some kind. The hero doesn't simply wield it. He will
ask it for help. Example: Martha breaks into the Carters' house
intending to free Zoe after she's grounded, because she views
them as kindred spirits. It's this action that gives Carter the
idea to deal with Martha; stand down, lower the EM barrier and
quit trying to control her so she doesn't feel like she needs to
escape.
Ridiculously Human Robots: Robots in television — particularly
comedic television — are usually human-like in ways that very
few sane programmers would deem useful. It can be something as
simple as being philosophical (wanting to understand human
emotion, wondering if they have a soul, etc.), but can extend to
such things as robot social cliques, robot food, robot
entertainment, robot religion, and even robot sex. It doesn't
matter if it makes no sense in the context of a mechanical
servant, or even if it's truly undesirable, the designers have
put it in there for some twisted reason. This will often take
the form of having a robot that looks, "thinks" (or at least
processes input) and behaves exactly like a human. Example: Not
in appearance, but Martha basically behaves like an angry
teenager.
Interchangeable Weapons: Martha has several weapons that she can
be set up with such as mini missiles, but her main weapon is a
sonic blaster. The Global Dynamics crew must change out the
secondary weapons but the sonic blasters are part of her wings.
EMP Proof: Martha and her drone squadron are insulated in such a
way that they are immune to EMP devices.
Weakness: Martha is easily angered when someone attempts to
control her. Enough damage can bring Martha down though it does
take quite a bit damage to bring her down. Martha may be
impenetrable, but she's not immune to damage. Martha must see
her targets in order to fire upon them.
Personality: Martha has the personality of your typical teenager
about in her late teens mentally. She can be loveable when not
threatened or attempting to control her.
Background:
Martha began life as a smart drone designed by Dr. Ethan Edison,
but events led to her becoming a fully functional AI. Dr.
Eddison created Martha as a test target for various Global
Dynamics weapons, designed to challenge them but to ultimately
be shot down. Despite restrictions placed on how smart and
sophisticated he could program the drones, Ethan was confident
Martha would succeed.
The drone's opponent was the VIPER system, an anti-aircraft
weapon that would make the Star Wars program redundant. While
being observed by the residents and corporate fixer Eva Thorne,
the drones began their attack pattern. The test was progressing
normally and all drones had been shot down, leaving only Martha.
Taking multiple shots, Martha amazed all those viewing the test
when she destroyed the VIPER before taking off. Attempts to
deactivate her failed, as she had somehow managed to lock Ethan
out of her network.
Back at the labs, Ethan explained that he had done nothing
different with Martha despite everyone's suspicion that he had
not remained inside parameters. What he had discovered though,
was that Martha's neural network had somehow become more
advanced than the one he had programmed her with. She had
essentially evolved from the mental equivalent of a toddler to a
teenager at a frightening pace. Concerned at the prospect of
what could happen if she remained free, Carter and Lupo went out
after her. Edison did warn them how ever to be careful has
Martha would not respond well to threats as a result of the
viper attack.
The pair didn't have to wait long as Martha appeared behind
Carter's vehicle. The two lead Martha into the Sheriff's Station
where they attempt to trap her in the jail cell, but Martha
escapes by blasting a hole in the wall. It is eventually
determined that Edison's wife had a hand in upgrading Martha to
her current abilities. Meanwhile, Martha has made her way into
Café Diem's freezer in order to use its fusion reactor to
recharge her battery. She attacks Larry on her way out but is
seemingly subdued by several energy-based weapons wielded by
Jack and Jo. Back at GD the truth behind Martha's original
malfunction comes out: Larry had installed a remote control
device on her in hopes of impressing Thorne.
As it turns out, Martha was only playing possum in order to gain
access to Global Dynamics. She frees the other drones and leads
them on an attack against the EM shield generators around
Eureka. Thorne calls for military air support, but Jack
convinces the others that Martha is only acting like a
rebellious teenager and that if they give her a little freedom
she will calm down and return home. After Zoe talks to her for a
bit, Martha does just that.
At some point Martha becomes a fixture at Global Dynamics, where
one of her duties is to act as a sentry. Part of her job
description is making sure no one lights up any cigarettes in
the building.
