I am only just starting on the journey of trying to balance the
right food, along with the battle of trying to give up sweet
things. I am pre diabetic but also have to watch the blood
pressure- many things that a food course on blood pressure said
we’re okay, like whole grain rice and pasta are not recommended
if your trying to watch sugars. Potato is to be avoided as well,
bread is another issue. Eggs are recommended as a good source of
protein if your diabetic, but have to be limited with high blood
pressure.
I do eat a lot of chicken, and started having fish , but it’s
what to have it with that is challenging. I don’t win the battle
every day at the moment. I have never really enjoyed cooking but
Dan and I stopped using ready meals and processed foods months
ago.
I have salad with quite a few things, and try and add
vegetables.

No fish and chips! I haven't cooked much lately; but when I
did, I never peeled potatoes. That's where all the good stuff
is, in the layer between the skin and the starchy inside. I ate
a lot of the skins; but if I was making mashed potatoes,
sometimes I'd boil them then peel off the skins off.

Agree , it’s a real chore balance food , but losing the foods we
love.
I really miss potatoes, the days that we do allow ourselves fish
and chips , if I’m not due at the lab for blood tests I allow
myself two chips …but for me they are far too high in potassium
, as are tomatoes which I also love! :'( ( potassium knocks
down kidney function. )
The one thing I seem to be able to get away with at the moment
is the dark chocolate covered rice cakes from Walmart….. I do
allow myself two of those a day. And I can still eat 12 almonds,
without a reaction.
I do remember at the end of his life, and in heart failure
, I reprimanded my dad for eating chocolate covered raisins for
breakfast in a bowl with a spoon , as if the were cereal!!
His answer was - “ what’s it going to do to me, kill me ?” That
made me laugh.

I love potato skins, especially with butter and salt ! lol
I do try to limit having potatoes , rice , pasta and bread - I
did go a whole week without having any and lost about 4lbs - but
gradually had to have them from time to time.

Salt? How naughty, but how yummy! I use mustard combined with
black pepper as a salt substitute and love it. I have mustard
in both liquid and powder. I use the powder form in cooking
since I believe the liquid type contains some salt. There is a
trick to it though: If you use just a little, it's great; but
if you can taste the mustard, you used too much. I added too
much to something the other day, and yuck!
I think real butter is healthier than margarine. I haven't
bought margarine in ages. I also don't eat white bread since
it's stripped of nutrients. I think it's bland and tasteless
too, so not having white bread was not a problem for me. Lucky
for me, my doctor hasn't said I should stop using butter or
eating whole wheat bread.

Yes butter is healthier, not sure it’s good with high blood
pressure though. I tend to get unsalted. I have never tried
mustard with black pepper - will give it a go. I don’t think I
have seen liquid mustard in the supermarkets, I have it in paste
form. Or perhaps you mean that kind but we call it paste and you
call it liquid ( U.K. verses USA ) lol

You are probably thinking of the mustard in jars. I don't know
if the UK has mustard in squeeze bottles or not; but that's the
kind I buy. I don't have to wash a knife or spoon after using
it. I store mine upside down so the mustard is right at the
nozzle. I use the door of my refrigerator since it won't topple
over there.

I buy unsalted butter too.

[/quote]If they have it and you try it, I think you'll love how
easy it is to put the mustard exactly where you want it. The
question may be if you like how the mustard tastes.
