Long hair

I was watching a Gaither video which had the fellow with long
hair in it. No one seemed to have a problem with it. The
church I grew up in did, that's for sure. They cited Paul:
I Corinthians 11:14 Doth not even nature itself teach you, that,
if a man have long hair, it is a shame unto him?
15 But if a woman have long hair, it is a glory to her: for her
hair is given her for a covering.
16 But if any man seem to be contentious, we have no such
custom, neither the churches of God.
I find that passage hard to understand. Was it a "shame" when
Samson had long hair, honoring the vow taken by Nazirites? Why
would God tell men who took that vow not to cut their hair if it
was a shame?
I also don't understand his reference to nature. Male lions
have long manes when females don't.

In every depiction of Jesus I've ever seen he has long hair.

Same here, Pat. It seems artists don't understand Paul either.

1Cor11 vs 2 to 16 has and is in some gatherings still a point of
for endless ebb and flow.
Paul starts with; 'I' praise you because you remember me in
everything and maintain the "traditions" as I passed them on to
you.
But I want you to know that Christ is the head of every man,(so
this appears to not be part of the traditions that he had passed
on) then he states his case on head coverings and hair in
relation to worship intimating the head covering as a symbol of
authority, the outward symbol (head covered) as representing the
inward attitude to the male leadership on the church.
Has Paul forgotten God does not look on the outward appearance
but on the inward things of the heart.
Neither does he give or explain the reference to angels imho.
Vs 14 it seems that Paul is not referencing nature in the sense
of the natural world (mother nature) but 'the way things are'
because of Gods design.
Another issue is, if the woman's 'hair' is a covering, why
would she still need to cover her head, as he relates " For if a
woman will not cover her head, she should cut off her hair, so
is there a difference in the 'covering' not being the same as
the hair??
Hair as a boy growing up my dad cut it pudding basin style, at
the school it was short back and sides from 'Jim's the barber'
ex WW2 barber, after three years of in the Army haircuts the
urge for long hair took over. with a fisherman's earring and a D
A styling I was the cat's whisker.
Just how long constitutes 'long hair' the artists license on
depictions of Jesus and his hair length may go with their mainly
European look.
Sampson had never had a razor on his head, so hair was cut back
in their day, the Nazirite male or female
had to have it longer than everyone else as a sign,
interestingly the long hair came with also a " no eating of
grapes, wine, vinegar or grape skins or seeds, plus don't go
near dead bodies.
And on termination the head shavings had to be burnt, plus an
offering of a lamb and ram and a grain offering ( bread made
with olive oil) and a drink offering and a make sure the temple
was in working order otherwise you could be a Nazirite for a
long time.
One wonders when the young men were giving Elisha a hard time
with " Go up, you bald head, go up-----" had he shaved his head
or were they referencing the fact that Elijah had 'gone up'?
From looking at the churches today, some keep Paul's admonition
and others it's a case of, whatever blows your hair up it
seems.

Dave,
We also have Absalom with his hair. He was said to be the most
beautiful man in Israel. There is no hint of condemnation about
it although that hair did probably eventually cost him his life.
It does not say his hair got caught, but I think it was.
2 Samuel 18:9 And Absalom met the servants of David. And Absalom
rode upon a mule, and the mule went under the thick boughs of a
great oak, and his head caught hold of the oak, and he was taken
up between the heaven and the earth; and the mule that was under
him went away.
