The U.K. will lower its voting age to 16

It looks as if the UK may soon be allowing youngsters as young
as 16 to vote. What do you think? I think that's a bit low.

Definitely too young. Some 16 year olds may be mature enough
but I think the majority will either not care and some will
definitely abuse the privilege.

There are 16 year olds , and then there are 16 year olds. The
brain is nowhere mature at that age .
I was an idiot at that age and only thought of boyfriends ,
fashion , and dancing!
But, there were hundreds of 16 year olds back in England , in
1914-18 who faked their age ( and superiors knew it) and who
fought and died for their country .
I must look up when “being a teenager “ came into vogue…

Looks to me, a not to subtle ploy to stay in power, will they
then lower the drinking age accordingly?

I personally don’t have a problem with it, although I do believe
that politics should be on the school curriculum. Obviously now
you have to stay at school until you are 18 years old , but it
use to be 14 and then it raised to 16. We had to make all kinds
of choices about what career path we wanted, so teenagers are
not beyond thinking things through. My twin brother joined the
army at 16years, so teenagers are not really children.
Years ago they would have been classed as young adults.
I realise that some will not care and many will not vote
seriously but it’s enabling them to take part in the real world
and get involved.
I must admit that I don’t understand politics and I am 67,
really wished we had learned more about it at school.

I must admit Dave that the my first thought was ‘ they want more
votes ‘ - so I do believe it is tactical. X
I think the drinking age should be higher - more so over here as
so many are not responsible drinkers at all!

Young people tend to lean left, so I'm guessing the Labour
government thinks this will bolster their majority. However,
young people often don't vote, so I'm wondering what Labour
might dangle as an enticement for them to vote. Does that mean
building more dance halls and party rooms? What else could they
bribe the young people with? Money to help young people who
can't afford to move out of their parents' home so they can rent
their own places?

Not sure,I guess we won’t know that until there is another
election. Maybe they might choose to lower the age of leaving
school back down to 16 as that would equally please many as they
really don’t want to be forced to stay in school until they are
18.
I did wonder whether raising the age was a tactic by the
conservatives to improve unemployment figures, or perhaps
prevent it from going higher.
I am at the stage in my life where I just know there is always a
tactical reason for most things these days when it comes from
who ever is in charge.

IT's Labour that wants to lower the voting age right; you wrote
"the Conservatives want to raise the age for what? 'very
confused' in Calgary, Helen likes that better than the miniscule
bit. LoL
