Hymns can help.

Not sure I'm in the right place here. Let me know if it's in
the wrong place. For some reason, the song about balm in Gilead
came to mind. If I ever knew what Scripture was being referred
to, I'd forgotten it so I looked it up. Wikipedia had a very
interesting article on it too.

It still remains more popular with black people than white. I'm
not sure how I first ran across it. My Mother took me to a
black church once when I was young. I remember the songs they
sang weren't the songs our church did; but I don't know if they
sang this song. I do remember however how welcome I felt there.
We were the only white people in the pews, but I soon relaxed
and it was great. I found a white choir singing this
traditionally black hymn. The link for Wikipedia, if you're

I've never heard this one before Kerry, but I often find the
words of hymns going round in my brain. A few years ago I
suffered badly with shingles which was the most painful thing I
ever experienced. It was too painful to lie down and i spent
about a month to six weeks on my sofa. it was winter and thee
nights were very long and I was very near to wanting to give up
and die. The song that kept me going was the Old Rugged Cross.
Up till that time I hadn't really liked it much but it helped me
to cling to the cross of Jesus and keep on clinging to Him was
all I could do.

I reckon that you're a better fit in this forum than I am.
On self examination I realise that whereas small 'c' catholicism
is my 'ideal' for a Christian forum, I'm well aware that I fall
well short of that ideal.
Wadya make of that?

I just love what used to be called 'Negro' Spirituals.
O Lord you know, I have no friend but you
If Heaven's not my home then Lord what will I do
The angels beckon me from Heaven's open door
And I can't feel at Home in this world any more.
In all honesty I have to admit that Hymns and Spiritual songs is
my biggest source of 'uplift'.
'Balm in Gilead' just blew my mind .... sheer nectar.
Thank you so much Kerry.

And thank you too. I hadn't heard that song in ages so I looked
it up to hear it.

Let us not forget that all of these songs were cries from the
heart of the 'Oppressed'
Negro slavery for example
Then you have the so called 'Welsh Revival', spawned as a
pressure relief valve for men who had no other way of 'earning a
living' other that to toil for long hours in the terrible and
dangerous environment of small 'pit propped' and often water
logged underground tunnels.

One of my sisters had shingles. It's horrible!
The song The Old Rugged Cross always reminds me of a couple who
used to sing it in our church. People could arrange to sing
songs; and when they sang for us, it was almost always that. I
never found out why; but they never had children -- I wonder if
it could have been that or something else?
This version was done in the church where the song was first
sung.

While slavery was a terrible thing, I've found that black people
now often value freedom more than white people; and many blacks
are better Christians too. It saddens me to see the problems
vexing the black community here in the US.
Did you know about Paul Robeson visiting miners in Scotland?
The song can be seen as more political than religious; but it
shows how he was on the side of the oppressed.
