Balance Exercises
By: Kerry Date: June 2, 2025, 5:33 pm
---------------------------------------------------------
Does anyone else here do exercises to help the sense of balance?
I do some almost daily. I do leg stands when I'm brushing my
teeth. That's number six at this website:
HTML https://www.silversneakers.com/blog/balance-exercises-seniors-2/
There is something seriously wrong however somewhere. It went
wrong when I went to have one of my back teeth removed. The
lady dentist used something like a mini-jack hammer that knocked
things around until she could pull them out. Something went
wrong with my hearing. I was almost deaf in my left ear but
with a loud noise inside my head and very dizzy when I got up to
walk. I think something got broken in my inner ear from the
heavy pounding and vibration. I still can't hear as well out of
that ear; and my sense of balance never recovered either. The
exercises do seem to help though.

Not long ago I did the usual 'Dr Goggle health analysis' and
found that by listing my malfunctions (including those which you
describe) I was suffering from 'portosystemic encephalopathy'.
So, I took my diagnosis to my real doctor who's immediate
response was 'Rubbish', the first check for portosystemic
encephalopathy would be a liver test, but we've only just got
the results back for your periodic blood testing which showed
'normal' regarding your liver function.
But the frustrating thing was that, having decided that I
'wasn't' suffering from portosystemic encephalopathy, my real
doctor did nothing to determine what was my real malady.
So here I am, having been forced to go to bed early because of
my extreme daytime inability to stay awake, I now find myself
awake after only one hour in bed, because of my inability to
stay asleep at night.

Oh [member=14]Kerry[/member] the dentist sounds like a horror
story to me! I’ve always hated dentist .Thryve always terrified
me.
Yes , I do balance exercises almost daily … I think keeping our
balance and keeping our legs going is virtually important as we
age .
@Mike ..yes , same as you , one hour after getting out of bed I
feel like I could go back to sleep …and sometimes I turn off the
light , and when I wake up it feels like I’ve been asleep hours,
only to find it been about 45 mins!, Then I just lay there …
Very annoying …
Maybe you need to call your doctor to tell him about
falling down. I would think they'd want to do something about
it since it could cost the healthcare system a lot more money if
the next time you have an even more serious accident like
falling down a stairwell or falling on the street hitting your
head on something. Perhaps you need referred to a specialist?
My healthcare insurance will pay for me to go a gym -- if the
gym is one they recognize. I may have a small co-pay; but their
theory is the exercise is preventative care. I wonder if the
British system covers such things. My guess is it might since
exercise also reduces high blood pressure. I think you need to
give your doctor another call.
According to John Hopkins, exercise and sleep are related.
Researchers don't understand exactly how; but they know there is
a connection. I don't go to a gym; but I do several other
exercises, many I can do in bed believe it or not. Some increase
strength, others help flexibility, etc. I find them boring so
usually have Old Time Radio shows playing. You could listen to
music or watch TV too, of course.

I read what you wrote elsewhere about back pain. Some of my
exercises are to keep the vertebrae where they're supposed to
be. They have really helped me. I also have a lumbar pillow
on the chair I sit on at the computer.
The reaction of the back muscles when a vertebrae goes out can
make things worse since the pain tends to make the muscles
tighten -- and that tension keeps them out of place. I can feel
my vertebrae snapping around when I do some of the exercises.
I don't slump over when I'm out gardening, thank goodness, since
that tends to make things worse. Sometimes I start to slump
sitting at my computer; but right now, I'm sitting upright
without leaning against the back of the chair.
Perhaps you'd benefit from an exercise bike They also help the
back muscles which keep the vertebrae in place. The upright
kind work, but I've read (don't know) that the kind you use in
bed are easier to use.
I was half-laughing at myself yesterday. I had ten gladioli
bulbs that needed planted; and the instructions said to put them
eight inches deep. Wow, the other three types of bulbs I had
planted before weren't that deep. In fact, one bulb was to be
only one inch deep. So I got the spade out of the shed. First
I had to tear out the plants I had there before -- I had liked
them for their leaves so let them take over that area to put in
something with flowers. There are still some to either side
now. Then I started digging. I ran into some kind of root that
travelled laterally and would have to stop to clip them. I
couldn't always pull them out completely. My back wasn't
hurting though -- it felt sore or stiff. I figured going on was
better than giving up. I'm not sure I got them down eight
inches! It might have been six or seven. The soil was nice and
wet though, and I was grateful for that. I still need to even
out the area and transplant wild strawberries for ground cover.

I did just that.
I have my own CD compilation of my favourite hymns and songs
which runs for an hour, and I was listening to that when I
couldn't get to sleep. Then I was woken an hour later (probably
by the sudden silence when it got to the end)
I realised that it must have very quickly sent me to sleep
because I could only remember Listening to the first three
songs.
That particular 'sleep' medicine must have immediate effect, but
be of incredibly short duration >:( :(
Does your CD player have a repeat button? I haven't
used my player in a long time, but I think it has one. You could
also find an online station that plays hymns. I've had trouble
finding any music stations I like that much.
I'd wake up no matter what since my doctor has me drinking so
much water. When I have trouble getting back to sleep, I often
pray silently for people I know and situations in the news so I
don't feel I'm wasting time.

I drink water too, but not after 6pm . Since I’ve been doing
that I only have to get out to pee once , about 3am. Which is
much better than having to get out multiple times .
My brother told me that he gets back to sleep if when he get
out of bed, he keeps a grey wall in front of his eyes and
doesn’t let himself think about anything,
Then, when he gets back in bed he gets a big paint brush and
paints the ‘grey wall’. It works for him…
I do often fail , because I forget to do it!! I start thinking
, which is fatal. If I stick to , and remember the grey wall ,
it works :)

Well Monday, Monday I've been out of balance with a gout
diagnosis, here was I thinking only the rich and famous got it.
So my confession is Jesus and gout is OUT.
Helen has me in the grumpy class; which I fit into quite easily.
I have never been a 'good' patient.
All of a sudden, even a crown seems very far distant.

After my daughter told me she had gout I looked it up and it
says it's a form of arthritis affecting mostly the big toe.
Lots of people seem to have it these days so perhaps it's the
'in thing'.
