       Hello there Pat .
       Question .
I presume you being ( loosely) in the Manchester area …you speak
       in a Manchester/Lancashire accent?
You remember my niece Rachel. Do you think that it could be
true , that Rachel says that she is always hated wherever she
lives and whenever she tries to get a job because of her
       southern accent.
She just got fired , and was told that it was because - “all
the clients hate her grating accent.
They told her that if she would talk on a local accent she would
never be accepted or get a job”.
Is there really a strong bias up there against a London
       accent ?

Hi Helen, The trend in TV and movies is away from the 'posh'
accents and more embracing of the regional differences. When I
first met Ray his friends used to call my accent la-di-da. I
had been born in Gloucestershire but lived in the Manchester
area from 5 till I was almost 30. Gareth says his sisters have
a Mancunian accent but I can't hear it.
I think if anything now I have a Bolton accent, Ray was Bolton
born and bred so his accent was quite strong but I think we sort
of rubbed off on each other - I became more Bolton and he became
       less.
I wouldn't think it was legal to sack somebody just for their
accent as they must have known about it from the interview.
I find the Birmingham accent difficult and also Glaswegian.
Liverpudlian is also a bit grating but my friends are from
Liverpool but have long enough in Bolton for it to have
       mellowed.

Oh that interesting. I would never have guessed that Bolton,
Liverpool Manchester etc were different accents , which just
shows how ignorant I am! Haha
Fascinating , thanks for that it does clear the picture a bit

What sort of accent does Rachel have? And can they really sack
her because of it? When I worked on the phones there were
people from all over the place with their different local
accents. I have found that very often when you get in touch
with a large company like Virgin media I have difficulty
understanding the foreign accents. I know that a lot of the
customer services are outsourced to places in India etc as our
company started to do that just before I retired. It's cheaper.

Agree about company’s using over seas techs and services. I
always ask where they are …often it’s India , Nigeria , or the
       Philippines . If it’s a tech support question that I’m asking ,
it’s almost hopeless to carry on as I can’t understand them. I
sadly admit that I have got angry sometimes and said “Get me
your supervisor or someone who can speak English “
Rachel does indeed have a London accent. My brothers and I
were all born in greater London Middlesex .
Robin only moved up north when she was about 8 or 9 I think.
Plus being home-schooled , she didn’t mix with locals , so she
didn’t pick up the local dialect. She said that she tried using
the local accent but she says it sounds silly and she can’t pull
       it off .
I do think that now the tv shows and movies use the actors own
accents it does sound more genuine.
I remember the days of radio and tv when they all had the BBC
       ‘queens English’ only .

Maybe whoever sacked her this week was being kind , in saying
that it was her accent , rather then saying that she couldn’t do
       the job to standard.
My first thought was to write back that it’s not a legal sacking
point. But I thought better of it.

I did wonder if that was the case but it's a shame for Rachel as
it must have made her feel bad and self conscious about the way
       she sounds to others.

So sorry to hear this, I am surprised they can sack her for that
as it’s discrimination. Don’t suppose she got that reason in
       writing ?
Was she on trial at the job as I know they can fire you if you
don’t have a contract, usually they say that you are unsuitable.
There is the great north/ south divide - never really known
       whether it’s serious or not.

My son took me to church last Sunday and we'll go again this
       week.
His motive is to get Jenayah into Sunday school so she has a
chance of getting into the local Christian church school which
he went to because he wants her to be brought up with Christian
standards. But whatever his motives he is enjoying going and
loves the warmth of the people.
Because he took his two year old last week for the first time he
had to go into the creche with her during the preach and one of
the ladies who had taken her granddaughter in told me afterwards
that she had had a good talk with him and felt that he is really
       seeking answers.
He was baptised there when he was just a teen but maybe for the
wrong reasons. He is now very aware of the evil in the world and
can see that has happened because of a loss of Christian values.
I have hope that the Holy Spirit is leading him to Jesus.
