Hello everybody!

I have just registered with the club. I have admired Unimogs for
as long as I can remember and would love to own one, I currently
own a vintage tractor which works for its living on some land we
have planted as an orchard and occasionally gets shown at local
shows. The Unimog will be used in the same way, to be used
around the orchard, moving trailers and getting firewood in and
a bit of gentle off-roading! Now I have a use for one I think
it's now or never to own one.
I've seen a few displays of Unimogs at various tractor shows,
mainly The Tractor World Show at Malvern (not sure if anyone on
here shows there?) and always try and speak to owners.
I am thinking along the lines of a 404 (smaller, more basic and
possibly more manoverable than a newer mog?) something with a
pto would come in handy.
Would be interested to hear owners views and if you think I am
looking for the right truck for my uses?
Thanks in advance for any replies.
Jon.

Hi Jon,
I have used a 404 for that purpose for many years. Most of the
404s that come on the market are petrol although there are a few
diesel around. The ex military ones like mine had a 6 cyl
sometimes twin carb engine which was around 100bhp but very
thirsty! A lot of diesel convesions were done using low revving
diesels like the old Perkins, but because the 404 is so low
geared this makes them woefully slow on the road. In my opinion
you need an engine which will hit 3500 - 4000 rev to make them
usable. I have an Iveco 2.5 turbo diesel fitted and this is
fine. you will also have to uprate the brakes for todays
traffic! Mine has a pto non live drive although they are harder
to find for the 404 now? I use mine with a mower, a crane with
timber pincers and a tipping body - hard to beat in the woods!
Welcome and good luck!
Phil

Hi Phil, thanks for the insight. I will bear it in mind when I
start looking......I have a classic car to find a new owner for
before I seriously start the search. ;D

Hi Jon,
Sounds like a 411 or 421 would probably be best for you, as you
can get linkage for them. I am currently restoring a 411 for a
customer at the moment, theres a couple of videos on facebook on
it www.fisher.engineering
If you have any questions feel free to ask :)

Hi Brian, Thanks for the reply!
Yes, the more I look at them I think the 411 would be ideal. The
only trouble is finding one for sale that I can look at? Are
they generally worth more being as there are less about?
Cheers Jonny.

Yes 411's are getting hard to come by at reasonable money now, i
have 3 people waiting for me to find them 411's for me to
restore for them, as you say the trouble is i can find them
abroad, but they can't view them and shipping also is a problem.
