       Respite and Reunion
By: Red Date: May 1, 2019, 1:30 am
       ---------------------------------------------------------
Red’s blade sparked as she carefully, yet confidently dragged a
grind stone against the edge. She sat upon a stump and focused
sharply on her blade. However, despite this refined focus, her
mind wandered. Was it fate that made the people you love most
scarce so you could truly appreciate their presence? Did fate
distance you from those loved ones so much because you’d
otherwise take them for granted? It seemed to Red that as much
as she wanted to see Undyne, both of their lives seemed to push
each other in the opposite direction. She wanted to be with her,
she wanted to go on missions and train with her master.
       ...And yet.
Could that have suppressed her individuality, her growth? Could
she not have learned what she had on her own if she were always
at Undyne’s side? Was it actually what she needed? There was no
way to know for sure, yet Red was no philosopher, and she knew
that. Her growth and experiences had allowed the young
apprentice to shine in ways that she didn’t give herself enough
credit for. She had earned courage on her own, she had faced the
odds and her fears with conviction. She had fought tooth and
nail to win. She had earned that.
       She was proud.
A smile formed on Red's face as she studied the familiar blade,
taking the time to also smile at herself as she fully reflected
on everything that had happened. She had done a good job. It
wasn’t perfect, but she never gave up, and never held back. She
always had done her best, and Undyne had been proud. The love
she had felt from her master after all of the hardships she
endured, it had helped Red grow into something great. She
finally felt like a hero, and it allowed to her to truly accept
herself and come into her own as a swordsman, a guard, and most
       importantly, her own person.
However, her story had only just begun. There was still much to
do, and whether or not she knew what was coming, she made sure
she wouldn't slack off. Not that Undyne would let her of course.
She wanted to be the best. She would do whatever it took to be
strong. Her smile faded as she stared determinedly forward,
clutching the hilt of her blade tightly. With a swift and
refined motion, she sheathed her weapon into it's scabbard,
taking a breath as she processed everything that she had just
thought about. It was time to move forward.

Perhaps it was coincidence that Red had been thinking of Undyne
just as her teacher had been thinking of her pupil – the fish
monster paused both mentally and physically at that very thought
before shaking her head briefly and continued onward through the
delightfully freezing town. No, Red was not just a pupil in her
books, especially not after what the young heroine and her
allies had been through some months ago.
Undyne wasn’t in armour today on her day off, instead she wore a
simple pair of jeans, a long sleeve black top underneath a cosy
jacket with the loose right sleeve folded and pinned neatly at
the shoulder and the usual sturdy pair of boots as she plodded
through the snow. Certainly they had been busy, especially when
duty calls to protect monsters of the Underground, but that also
didn’t mean she wouldn’t make time for those important to her
       either.
Soon enough she had arrive at her destination, sparing just a
moment to double-check the time before raising a hand to knock
on the door, waiting to see if she was right or not about
predicting the young protégé being here.

Red gasped, her eyes squinting as she blinked a bit before
looking from the fire in her home, back to the blade, and then
to the door. As she set down the blade, the young swordsman
rubbed her eyes, wiping away the focus she had built as she made
her way to the door. Her red hoodie bob gently near her neck as
her fluffy blonde hair bounced with each step. Her baggy, comfy
jeans dragged a bit a her feet as she walked forward towards the
wooden door. She opened the door carefully, letting the light
creep into her home before she saw who was waiting for her.
Red stared upward to her master, her mouth gently agape as her
paw rested on the handle. The sound of the crackling fire could
be heard from inside the home as Red stared with a calm silence.
       It had been so long.
Mind you, they had always been near each other, and they had
both been working, but any time they had seen each other lately
it had always been nothing but a passing glance or a quick wave.
There was always so much to do. She didn't even have time to ask
her how she was doing. Yet, here she was. In fact, the most
recent memory Red had of them actually spending time together...
was when she had been rescued from the Koray.
Red felt her nose crinkle... tears beginning to well in her eyes
as she stared to her master, not even trying to hold anything
back. It felt so forlorn, being so close yet never being able to
actually spend any time together. Red felt her voice choke a
bit, her paws shaking as she tried to smile.
"..I...I missed you so much." She hiccuped, shoulders trembling
as her curls began to hide her face.

The moment the door had swung open and Red's presence was indeed
let known, the young heroine was met with the fish monster's
broad, signature grin. Speckles of light reflected off of those
sharp fangs in an ironically welcoming way before they parted
slightly to make way for a soft chuckle at Red's affirmation.
Without hesitation, Undyne leaned forward and brought Red into a
robust one-armed hug; while it was a typically firm motion from
the aquatic warrior, it shouldn't have caused Red any harm,
"Hey, same here." she replied softly - well, 'softly' according
       to Undyne's standards anyway.
After an appropriate time had passed, Undyne broke away from the
embrace and added, "You doing much today? Maybe we could hang
       out for a bit?"
