After making sure that everyone was able to head home safely,
the matter with June, Austin and J.O.H.N. taken care of and one
last check with the guards spread across the Underground for the
umpteenth time that there weren’t any serious causalities with
the citizens of the Underground; Undyne had made a beeline
straight to Waterfall.
She had removed her tattered, once-brand-new shoes and tossed
them aside. She then awaited for the mud to sink and slurp about
her toes; the fish monster closed her eye to take in her very
much welcomed peaceful surroundings in isolation. She breathed
in the cool, oddly-pleasant humid air slowly and listened to
water flowing and insects buzzing in an oddly quiet, sombre
harmony. It was almost as though, they knew what the warrior was
feeling.
The next thing Undyne did was take a few steps forward before
plunging into a nearby pool of water, smoothly floating and
drifting through the water like a plastic bag flying through the
wind until her back gently tapped the bottom of the pool.
Looking up, she stared through the crystal clear water, fluid
flowing calmly through her lips and gills at the sides of her
neck as she lay there with her arm stretched out and feet half
buried into the gravel.
Undyne lay there in comforting, eerie silence for several
minutes, allowing for the events of what had just happened to
sink in. Until suddenly, she let out a mighty scream. A scream
of anger, frustration, humiliation, confusion and regret which
was muffled by the vast volume of water and which could not be
heard above the water’s surface, but quite certainly be heard by
her fellow aquatic brethren were there any hidden away in this
pond. She shot off to the side, slamming a fist against the
rocky wall, pulverizing a deep hole into it as she bellowed;
completely venting her pent up emotions into this once-wall. She
didn’t stop punching and screaming until she was completely
drained, panting heavily as she floated to the top of the pond.
Still staring at the ceiling, she eventually drifted off to the
side of the pond and pulled herself out of it. Undyne frowned as
a few thoughts ran through her mind, until she eventually made
the decision to head back to where she was when all this trouble
started.
To the hall where the party was hosted.
[hr]
Sometime later Undyne had reached the hall, left half destroyed
from the quakes. Her eye wandered along the ground which was
littered with debris and broken furniture. She then carefully
waded through the wreckage until she came to a stop where the
food table was once set up. It had been flattened by a
reasonably large chunk of wall, splattering all kinds of food
and drinks under and around it. The warrior then summoned a
spear-in-hand, wedged it underneath the chunk of wall and
awkwardly twisted her body on top of it as her one arm latched
onto the weapon until her weight had created enough leverage to
lift the wall and kicked it off the crushed table.
‘Where did I go wrong?’ she thought to herself with a sigh when
the Captain finally came to a stop in front of her new piano;
now covered with rubble, scratches, dents and dust from the
building. It appeared to be still intact and surprisingly
playable. So the blue monster then placed the dishes down and
used both her arm and body to heave the rubble off of the piano;
allowing for it to topple into a messy heap on the other side.
The lid over the keys was raised in a slow, creaking motion as
Undyne took a seat in front of it. The placing of just one hand
only served as a vivid reminder of what had happened, but still,
the pianist needed to express the complex thoughts and feelings
which haunted her for her violent outburst earlier was simply
just not enough.
[center]
HTML https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=skFugVOqBM4[/center]
She started off with playing the bass keys – two, sometimes
three at a time - on the left side on its own. The lonely tones
were reflective of but a lone wolf baying to a moon, in search
of other voices to join her. About half a minute later she
summoned five small, chopstick-sized spears – all of which
hovered above the right keys vertically. Like she was baring her
soul into the music, Undyne lowered her head as she listened,
concentrated and finally the spears aided in completing the
sombre, reflective piece.
For one so brash, brave and loud, this was a rare moment to be
able to find Undyne expressing herself in a much more emotional
and finessed manner. One with her magic and discipline, turned
into another extension of herself as she allowed for the tune to
carry her weight and echo throughout this portion of Waterfall.
Such temporary moment of eerie serenity didn't last however, for
moments after she had finished playing the song a few times a
frustrated growl hissed from the fish monster. It seemed that
her muddled thoughts from earlier were still lingering. She
hated this feeling, the feeling of uncertainty of what to do.
She raised her fist and slammed it onto the keys, the force
behind it was enough to splinter a chunk of the piano and sent
some ivory keys flying in all directions.
[glow=red,2,300]"DAMN IT ALL!"[/glow]

Little did Undyne know, there was something lurking that tracked
her from afar. Keeping enough of a distance so as to not be
intrusive, but close enough to recognize when Undyne began to
move to a different location. Whatever or whoever it was,
clearly had enough smarts to not directly intervene with the
Captain’s underwater outburst.
Regardless, it was as if the entity lurking knew where Undyne
would of course eventually end up, as they moved on ahead; and
swiftly hid themselves awaiting Undyne’s arrival to the banquet
hall where the party began earlier in the evening.
Soon enough; Undyne arrived at the unfortunate mess, just as
predicted. She cleared out some of it, but she couldn’t exactly
do it all on her own… Well, she could just not efficiently. It
wasn’t her goal to clean the place anyway, not really. She was
aiming to find something important; the piano— thankfully it
remained mostly intact. Then, she began to play. It was always
this song when she made the decision to come here after that
ordeal every other timeline. Not many would see or hear this,
and fewer still would manage to appreciate how emotionally
strong yet delicate Undyne was being as she played the piece on
this almost ruined piano. The one watching could hardly blame
her; the piece was beautiful and honestly the only one that
could show what she was feeling. The only way anyone listening
could understand.
Though, as far as Undyne knew, nobody was listening.
Oh how wrong she was. When her anguish and pained internal
conflict caused her to damage the very instrument that mere
moments ago helped; moments after her vicious outburst—
everything fell silent. Pieces of the piano indeed flew in all
directions, but eventually they seemed to slow down until
reaching a dead stop in mid air. A slight sheen of pale cyan
swirled around each and every piece; from notable chunks to the
thinnest of splinters…
It was as if time itself reversed for the piano; as the sound of
the crunch and impact also inverted, the damage that Undyne
caused, was undone... But who could have possibly..?
[glow=white,2,300]”Well then.”[/glow] From a good few meters
away behind the piano; among the rubble stood an armored
individual; the same one that appeared to the group at the Core
and subsequently slithered away, only to taunt via some other
means. Rather than using elusive tricks of magic to exist just
beyond the perception and reach of others, they were there plain
as day. [glow=white,2,300]”Fancy meeting you here, hmm?”[/glow]
Their tone was odd to say the least, equal parts genuine concern
and haughty condescension; yet all together vague. The Sans sort
of vague, to be specific, arguably the worst most mind-boggling
kind of vague.

The fish monster blinked with surprised as a chill was sent up
the small scales on the back of her neck as the splinters and
keys of the instrument were slowed to a gradual stop. This Aura,
it wasn’t something she was familiar with per say, but how it
felt, it felt like something of some significance; it kind of
reminded her of her own Green Magic but also at the same time
was very different.
Undyne whirled around on the spot and swiftly landed on her feet
at the ready. Next thing she knew she was faced the familiar yet
mysterious monster from earlier, only this time they looked
different – no longer a mere apparition. Instinctively she wiped
her cheek with the back of her wrist before a toothy scowl
shaped her features, “And people said I was impatient.” she
muttered to herself as she recounted the promise she made to
track them down and yet not even half a day later, here they
were.
She then raised her voice and spoke more clearly, “You know, you
have a knack for having really crap timing.” Undyne remarked,
not all too impressed with the shroud of vagueness they insisted
with, “What do you want?”

The armored one chuckled lightly; and waved in a more friendly
manner despite Undyne's clear scowl and disdain.
[glow=white,2,300]”Yes, yes, people do say that you are quite
impatient. I'm aware of the irony.”[/glow] It seemed he too
remembered the same promise, one that he of course welcomed at
the time and still did— this was different though. He stepped
forward a few paces and shrugged. [glow=white,2,300]”This might
sound weird, but this has nothing to do with that promise at
all. That isn't what I'm here to cash in on or fulfill, nor are
you.”[/glow] Yep. Definitely Sans-tier vaguetalk, for sure.
Either way, this was a more delicate situation that needed a
different sort of approach. For all the vagueness that this
individual was putting off, perhaps he knew exactly how delicate
the situation really was right now? [glow=white,2,300]”Is that
so? Fair enough, that's just how you see it.”[/glow] Apparent
knack for crappy timing aside, Undyne was only given a shrug in
return for that statement. Now, what came next could arguably be
far more interesting. In the same instant Undyne asked her final
question, the mysterious monster posed...
[glow=white,2,300]”What do you want?”[/glow] The exact same
thing, at the exact same time.
Whether Undyne was stunned or not, the enigma in white continued
to speak. [glow=white,2,300]”Bit of a loaded question don't you
think? If you must know; I want the same thing as you.”[/glow]
Another step forward was made, one in unshakable confidence— the
kind of confidence that Undyne herself was most known for.
[glow=white,2,300]”I want to know if what I am doing is still
the right thing. I want to know if the path I walk is truly one
of my own creation... Or if it is pointless in the end.”[/glow]
Tilting their head slightly to the side, the flickerings of
magic from within the helmet flashed from under the visor.
[glow=white,2,300]”Or we just really want a pizza, one of the
two.”[/glow]

Undyne crossed her arm across her front when the armoured one
chuckled and her toothy scowl lessened into a stern yet
suspicious stare. Was he really as hostile as she initially
thought? Thinking back to the events at the Core he did warn
them about the dangers and had helped somewhat in other ways --
'They're still a jacka[i]ss.'[/i] Undyne concluded on her
opinion of him. Whelp, that was that.
Her signature spears still floating ans gradually rotating on
their axis behind her - above the piano - indicated that she
wasn't letting her guard down, but they were still pointing to
the ceiling rather than at him.
She allowed for him to speak when he chose do so and yet at the
moment they asked the same question in unison brought some pause
for Undyne. At least, until he stepped forward with confidence,
to which she responded by doing the same; albeit rather
subconsciously. Was it because of the instinct ingrained so much
into her being to not back down from a challenge? Perhaps.
To his following questions Undyne was unusually quiet - or in
his case, for this instance, predictably quiet - as she mulled
over what he had said. Perhaps it was even obvious that the cogs
were turning in her head? While she was surprised by what he had
chosen to ask and say, at the same time it was also somehow not
that surprising. Was he a Seer? Practised some sort of psychic
sorcery of some kind maybe? Had he read her mind? The latter of
the list seemed to be the most likely, she thought, since he had
already demonstrated such an ability already.
At least, that would have been her conclusion if it weren't for
the fact that he had seemed to know her - know her very well
actually. Of all times and monsters, he was here in this exact
moment, asking rather thought-provoking questions that hit close
to home. The kind of questions that a mere fan of the heroine
wouldn't ask.
Finally she spoke up again, "How do you know so much about me?"
she questioned, although with a tone that wasn't as harsh as
earlier before averting her eye towards the serenity of
Waterfall. Her thoughts then went back to the question he asked
and then the events at the mines some months prior, "... Has
this happened before?"

The stern stare was nothing new. Understandable, but nothing
new. This mysterious stranger readily assumed Undyne didn't
exactly think too highly of him, and for the moment he was of
course correct. [glow=white,2,300]”I don't need to read minds to
tell what you're thinking. Speak freely, if you so
desire.”[/glow] He made a slight bow, an oddly official and
regal one at that. Noting Undyne's overall temperament, it
seemed as though this was going swimmingly so far; she was
listening and giving thought to what was said. The way he saw
it— if she could still step forward with matching confidence,
she might not even be as conflicted as she thought!
Still, she was more quiet than most would think she could be
given this line of very specific questioning. Was it predictable
from the armored monster's perspective? Sure, but that wasn't
exactly a bad thing... Maybe it was a relief? It was true
thought, a run of the mill fan wouldn't be asking these sorts of
things... No, these would be the type of things a friend would
likely say. Yet, from Undyne's perspective, they had not met
until the events at the Core...
[glow=white,2,300]”Hmm?”[/glow] Now things were fully kicking
into gear; Undyne had her own curiosity to satiate but she had
asked the right thing this time. [glow=white,2,300]”You know, I
find it unfathomably disrespectful that there are people with
the gall to think you're nothing but a meathead— when clearly
you are smarter than that.”[/glow] The enigma in white scoffed
at the idea that some people would be so close minded.
[glow=white,2,300]”Yes, from my perspective. This has happened
many times over, with mild variations of course.”[/glow]
While speaking, the armored one was simply looking around the
ruined hall, as if he was making sure of something. Maybe one of
those variations he was talking about? Nevertheless, his gaze
once again fell on Undyne. Though not directly due to what he
was currently wearing, there was definitely some manner of
fierce conviction behind his gaze— picking up on that would be
effortless for Undyne. [glow=white,2,300]”I see you aren't
completely against having a go at me this time.”[/glow] He
inquired, gesturing to Undyne and her spears.
[glow=white,2,300]”My question is, what is it that will actually
happen next? What is it that this instance of you brings to the
table? Is where you are now where you want to be? Have you been
going forward in your life on your own terms or not?”[/glow] He
shrugged once again, letting the question sit for a while.
[glow=white,2,300]”Only you can answer those questions. Not me.
Not Asgore. You.”[/glow] Hopefully, she would be able to answer
them, for her sake more than anyone else's.

Ambiguity wasn’t exactly one of Undyne’s strong points, so she
wasn’t surprised by the comment he made. Perhaps even a small
part of her respected that touch of forwardness. The blue
monster did however, blink with mild surprise at the bow that
followed; his conduct made it more difficult for the scaled
monster to maintain her dislike for him – at least, as much as
she had earlier, “I don’t trust you.” she stated rather bluntly
yet still respectfully in reflection to his bow, “The way you
keep talking – even at the Core – you act as though you know
something is going on, or is going to happen.”
While she continued to frown and as much as Undyne wanted to
keep her guard up, one of the four spears behind her spoke
otherwise when it shattered like glass after hearing his
assertion; and what he had continued to say just confirmed what
she had said earlier, “This is crazy.” Undyne muttered under her
breath as she turned around to look out to the waters of
Waterfall; through the gaps of her spears. Ironically those
glowing weapons felt like bars of a window within the collapsed
hall, like a prison She then continued with a clearer tone,
“People like you and Sans knowing about this timeline stuff. How
it’s happened before – many times as you’ve said but the rest of
us been left in the dark about it, completely unaware.” That
yellow eye turned skyward to stare at the glistening rock
ceiling, “So that would mean that we have been down here longer
than we have thought.”
Her hand curled into a tight fist which shuddered lightly, ‘How
many times have I betrayed June?’
When the Captain turned around she was met with that convicting
gaze and instinctively her expression hardened, as though to
challenge it, “For real, before I really wanted to kick your
arse before but now I don’t really see how that’s going to
benefit anyone. Even if it is still tempting.” she said simply
before pausing to give his questions some thought, “Everything
is so different now but my goals are still the same. I may not
be where I want to be now but I will be there to liberate
monsterkind to the Surface one way or another. Maybe Asgore’s
methods weren’t exactly the most ethical but we can still find
other ways to free everyone and I still want to stand by his
side despite everything. A pledge of my life to our king isn’t
something I take lightly and I cannot just walk away from
someone even when things start to get difficult or murky.”
She then shrugged, “Some find it foolish but I say there isn’t
enough monsters out there that you can count on.”

[glow=white,2,300]”Fair enough, I don't blame you.”[/glow] The
mysterious individual replied casually with a hint of class.
[glow=white,2,300]”Really how many people would you trust that
show up to be helpfully ominous, am I right?”[/glow] They added
with a chuckle of sorts. Regardless, they weren't particularly
surprised with what Undyne said, but accepted it anyway.
[glow=white,2,300]”We'll see, I suppose.”[/glow]
The dropped spear earned a hum of curiosity, but Undyne was left
to speak as she wished for the time-being.
[glow=white,2,300]”Crazy is an understatement, I'll say that
much.”[/glow] Now, she was cooking with gas. Undyne really did
catch on quick when given the right information, almost always.
[glow=white,2,300]”The worst part about that is... If the world
rewinds again, you won't know and we will be back to square
one.”[/glow] Thus, the problem was put out on the table, and
only two people so far would potentially know for sure.
[glow=white,2,300]”It is said ignorance is bliss.”[/glow]
Perhaps in this case specifically, that was true. Who in their
right mind would want to have this kind of knowledge?
[glow=white,2,300]”Again, I don't blame you. I came prepared,
that's all.”[/glow] The armored one shrugged their shoulders
slightly. Their tone didn't precisely convey the outright desire
for a fight or physical confrontation. It was far more close to
acceptance— accepting that it could be possible, coming from
Undyne. Despite this, her answer was 'satisfactory' so to speak,
since the armored enigma nodded slowly, listening intently.
[glow=white,2,300]”I see, I wouldn't exactly call wanting people
to be the best them they can be 'foolish'. That begs the
question though; what will you do to get there if our King's
methods are flawed? Do you think he will listen when anyone
tells him his plan was wrong? Because I think it was exactly
that.”[/glow]

The fish monster nodded a couple of times at his reaction before
pointing out with a shrug and a mild frown, “Keeping an air of
ambiguity doesn’t exactly help, but I suppose you have your
reasons.”
She then scratched the back of her head with low grunt of
frustration, “That is such bullshit for it to keep happening
like that! And since this has apparently happened many times
over then explaining it to just about anyone would be exhausting
and a waste of time to do something about it.” the Captain
continued, this time saying her thoughts aloud more so than
talking to the mysterious figure for now. The gears started
turning as she thought over what had been just said again and
tapped a finger to her chin contemplatively. Everything else she
felt confused and guilty about seemed trivial now that she was
looking and thinking about the bigger future.
Her goal to protect Monsterkind.
What good was she if her own mind and memories were turned
against her, “I want to start setting up precautions in case
things start over again so at the very least I am aware or
reminded of this possibility somehow because I can’t do my job
effectively if I don’t even know what’s going on. I have a
feeling I might not be able to do whatever it is you and Sans do
to keep track of things, but I might just start talking to him
or Alphys about those headbands from the mines. Like some sort
of emergency-on-the-spot-solution in case it happens again sort
of thing.”
It seemed that Undyne begged to differ about having such
knowledge, the stubborn fish wasn’t going to just accept things
as they are forever just yet!
Undyne was snapped out of her train of thought when asked the
questions regarding their king, “If I’m honest it’s likely one
of those situations where I’ll cross the bridge when I get there
sort of situations. Given what’s happened I think he would be
hard-pressed to stick to his original plan now and he seemed
willing to listen to more options this time at least. If I feel
or someone has expressed their concerns about flaws I will talk
to him about it and see what happens. He isn’t ruthless or
unkind, I still have faith in him. I’m just –” she then twirled
her wrist a few times as she was collecting her thoughts, “- A
little confused right now but I think I can work through it.”

[glow=white,2,300]”Mm, maybe it does maybe it doesn't. I have my
reasons.”[/glow] Both a reaction and an example, quite amazingly
put too.
Letting Undyne process her thoughts aloud, the enigma in white
simply nodded. It was, as colourfully as Undyne said 'such
bullshit'— and she wasn't even among those that experienced it
in a direct fashion like Sans for instance.
[glow=white,2,300]”Indeed; it would be exhausting. I can confirm
that it is exactly that... However, waste of time?”[/glow] The
armored one shook his head. [glow=white,2,300]”Not at all a
waste of time. A direct explanation doesn't always give the best
results. Always caused paranoia, unrest, panic, et
cetera.”[/glow] No doubt something Undyne as Captain of the
guard wanted to avoid completely if able.
Undyne was always pretty proactive on things like this, a very
welcome occurrence. [glow=white,2,300]”Good, you should talk to
Sans first. Doooon't talk to Alphys just yet.”[/glow] There he
was again, speaking as if he knew something.
[glow=white,2,300]”I mean, you won't be able to most likely.
Hard to explain— its mostly her work schedule conflicting with
yours for a good while; it is not my place to tell you what she
knows. Just go to Sans first, okay?”[/glow]
Her thoughts on Asgore were interesting too. She was right, if
Asgore didn't deviate from the original plan, well... Not much
good could possibly come of it. [glow=white,2,300]”Hah, 'this
time', how topical. True though, seems like that is how it
is.”[/glow] Perhaps Undyne could get through to Asgore in the
end. Only time would tell, as it always has.
[glow=white,2,300]”You're lucky, your faith is more or less well
placed at the moment. I hope it stays that way. When it doesn't,
and he ends up the exact opposite of what you believe... Things
get ugly.”[/glow]
The mysterious monster folded his arms and gave Undyne one last
look over. [glow=white,2,300]”Do you think you'll be alright
now, then?”[/glow]
