[SERP] Particularly Potent Poetry Performances (Open Scene)
By: guest126 Date: March 20, 2018, 5:18 am
---------------------------------------------------------
[sub]This is a special event role play scene, so while it is
open for anyone to participate, there are a few unique
requirements to bear in mind should you wish to have your
character perform as part of the event rather than simply
spectate:
- Original works are preferred, but it is permitted to utilize
poetry from the Surface (such as works in the public domain).
Non-original works will be judged more on delivery than content.
- Performances must be done without music, costumes, or props,
though some forms of magical expression are permitted provided
they are not damaging to the environment. It should not be the
primary focus of the delivery, however, which should be
expressive oration.
- Deliveries should be done in a single post, then spectating
characters will write reaction posts and at the end put a
numerical grade of 0 to 10 as an author’s note, where 0 is the
lowest and 10 is a perfect score. If a spectator misses a round,
they can react to multiple performances and just note the
appropriate character for each score at the end.
- Participating performers may react and score other
participants as well, but please try to keep reactions fair and
in character. This is all just for fun after all!
- At the end of the event scores will be added together to
determine first, second, and third place. There will be
appropriate in character prizes handed out to those who place in
the top three.
The competition will not start immediately so characters have a
chance to enter the scene and place themselves as spectators or
speak with the appropriate character should they wish to
participate. Characters will be entered on a first come, first
serve basis, and called in the order they enter into the
competition for the sake of orderly performances. Until the
event starts, characters are free to mingle.[/sub]
Night had fallen over the Underground with the daystar having
set an hour or two ago, the nearly full luminescence of the
evenstar gracing much of monsterkind’s domain where inclimate
weather did not preclude such a silvery sight. Unfortunately for
the denizens of Snowdin Town, however, thick cloud cover did
block such a pallid glow from being seen tonight, the fluffy
cumulonimbus clouds hiding the ceiling stars and stalactites as
well whilst they gently deposited a fresh dusting of snow upon
the warmly lit villa below. The wind was mild this evening, only
rarely gusting down between the buildings and through layers of
clothing, allowing the gentle snowfall to drift down rather
peacefully onto the various dwellings and fill in the day’s
treaded paths once more with white.
Downtown Snowdin was aglow with various businesses still open
for a few more hours before the evening advanced into night, the
golden light of the street lamps casting a cozy illumination
along the main thoroughfares, whilst the windows of those varied
shops gilded the ground in their own way, providing glimpses
into what wares or services those outlets could provide. Tucked
prominently on a street corner, the cafe and coffee shop
Espresso Yourself’s long, windowed front gave perhaps a broader
insight than most, still abuzz with a variety of patrons
scattered within its walls enjoying the inviting atmosphere and
popular wares. Entering into the front of the cafe would put one
a few feet in front of the main counter, a cashier attending
guests as they arrived for their orders with the chalkboard menu
gracefully written out on the wall behind it which led into the
kitchen.
To the right from there was a collection of various tables
sprawled out neatly but comfortably spaced, some round, but some
more square ones lining the walls below the large windows that
wrapped around the front and part of the building’s side.
Further back past a large, cozy hearth lay a casual reading
nook, complete with a compliment of comfortable chairs, couches,
and large cushions with a sizeable selection of books lining the
walls in secured shelving. To the left was a long, curved bar
with stools that wrapped around the side of the kitchen, leading
to an open area similarly filled with tables, but at the far end
was a performance stage with a piano and some other instruments
being attended by several monsters wearing the familiar uniform
colors for the cafe along with branded aprons.
They were clearly setting up for an event of some kind as they
arranged microphones and performed sound checks quietly above
the restaurant’s usual melodic ambiance, and if one were to look
about a bit further they might see a small table setup off to
the side of the stage with a bold sign proclaiming “Poetry Slam
Event Tonight! Sign Up Here!”, manned by a hip looking faun who
was perusing something on his phone in between monsters coming
up to inquire about the event.

---------------------------------------------------------
The door swung upon with a single, strong sweeping motion and
ended with a small bell chiming just as boldly as another patron
entered the establishment. Having finished her shift for the
day, Undyne was seen without her signature suit of armor, but
instead proudly donned thick black boots, jeans and a long black
coat and hand gloves. Due to recent events, the right sleeve of
her coat had been folded and pinned neatly over the shoulder of
her absent arm so as to avoid it flapping senselessly whenever
she moved.
The Captain brushed off the small deposits of snow off of her
shoulders and the top of her head before she marched brazenly
over to the counter before flashing a toothy smile and leaned on
it slightly with a hand, “Hey, I’d like to order some Jasmine
Green Tea and a savory scone on the side you think will taste
good heated up. Thought it would be best to warm up before the
Poetry Slam.” she addressed whomever was currently working
behind the counter. The fish monster then took a moment to take
in her surroundings and the ambience of the café. It wasn’t that
often she visited this part of town, so it was a nice change of
pace and especially with an enticing event she secretly had an
appreciation for.

By: Saiph Date: March 20, 2018, 9:41 pm
---------------------------------------------------------
The snow crunched beneath bare feet and squished between bare
toes, flurries dive bombing a cloaked figure as they waded their
way stealthily in the direction of the well-lit beverage shop.
Well... not so much a cloak as it was an off-white sheet, draped
across a rather slender and short figure beneath. As they
approached the steadily-closing door, due to an intimidating
fish monster's previous entry, they reveled in the wide sweep of
warmth emitting from the great indoors.
However endearing this warmth might have been, the child-like
figure merely inched their way closer... never nearing too
quickly in fear of drawing unwanted attention. Before the door
was able to shut completely, Saiph squeezed their way past the
diminishing margin of entry and stepped quietly around Undyne
until they were positioned several feet behind the other. Their
intentions to join the poetry event taking place in this
establishment would have to wait, as the smaller monster was in
no way equipped to approach anywhere near the counter as long as
the other was standing there.
Gleaming buttons sown onto the front of the sheet gave off the
illusion of peeking as the ghost gingerly awaited an opening to
step forward.

---------------------------------------------------------
Service at Espresso Yourself was as orderly as ever, so it
wasn’t long after the Captain of the Royal Guard entered
the establishment that the cashier at the front counter was
finished with the other monster before Undyne’s
transaction, sending them on their way with an order number to
put on the table of their choosing. Tonight a male chipmunk
monster with a spunky mohawk was working the front, the nametag
on the apron proclaiming them to be Niskel. His walnut brown
eyes spied the absent arm with a brief expression of alarm,
since such information had not been given in the Crown’s
recent press release, but the employee quickly regained his
composure, forcing himself to meet the piscean’s singular
eye rather than look at that shoulder. “An excellent
choice, madam Captain,” he assured her warmly, ringing up
the beverage. “I think I know just the perfect scone to go
with it too,” came the more confident assertion as he
pointed to a rather herb laden savory
HTML https://lifeloveandgoodfood.com/savory-ricotta-scones/
in the
display cabinet, adding that to her total as well before telling
her the correct amount and exchanging appropriate currency, also
giving her a table number placard with the change.
“It’ll be just a couple of minutes, but feel free to
sit wherever you like. The slam won’t start for a
bit.”
As soon as Niskel was done with Undyne, his eyes turned toward
the ghostly child monster, glad that the mat at the front would
catch the majority of any snow tracked in from outside before it
could muddy up the rest of the hardwood flooring. A friendly if
slightly buck toothed smile was given to Saiph, a furry brown
hand pointing toward the menu above and behind him helpfully.
“I might recommend the mac’n’cheese; pretty
popular with the monster kids, but take all the time you need to
figure out what you’d like little fellow.”

By: Saiph Date: March 21, 2018, 8:59 pm
---------------------------------------------------------
Once the Captain had resigned her position at the counter, the
unusual ghost child inched its way forward... gleaming buttons
soaking in the furry face occupying the space before them. With
somehow uncertain behavior, despite any physical attributes that
might otherwise let on to this subtle emotion, Saiph examined
the menu. Nowhere on this menu, however, did they see anything
about poetry. And whilst Mac'N'Cheese did sound to be somewhat
of an interesting combination... it wasn't what they truly
desired.
A step back distanced them from the other, and the sheet at
their knees began to sway as their head was on a constant swivel
for something that might give them a clue as to where they ought
to be. It wasn't long before the painstakingly obvious banner
advertising sign-ups for the poetry slam caught their attention,
and the pair of legs at their disposal shifted their weight
impatiently from one to the other before darting off in the
direction of the aforementioned faun.
The blurred torpedo of a child wobbled their way to a stop
before the distracted elder, a sheet of paper ripping from
beneath the folds of their cloth, seemingly by some unseen
force, and offered up. If examined, the scrawl on the front
could only be determined to be a childish attempt at profound
poetry. A single shine across the surface of the creature's odd
replacement for eyes was all that would attest to their
excitement.
Nevertheless, it seemed this is something they were passionate
about.

By: Bob Date: March 24, 2018, 12:35 am
---------------------------------------------------------
Bob had been anticipating his participation in this event for
weeks. He had been polishing up his skills for weeks, filtering
and painfully editing through his works to find one he could
share in this slam. He became a regular spectator for this
event, gathering many pieces of inspiration from other
performers for which he had thoroughly enjoyed their diverse
voices an opinions. And now it was his turn to share his voice.
A paper folded in his jaw, he trotted perkily through the snow,
not just the tickling cold making his footsteps light. If his
eyes were light bulbs they'd be turning the evening to a noon.
His path was clear, as his eyes locked onto Espresso Yourself as
he avoided grinning so as to ruin the paper in his mouth. This
was going to be absolutely fantastic.
The door chimed as merrily as he was as entered with wiped paws.
His steps were slower and calmer from the welcoming warmth, but
his eyes were still happily alert in typical Temmie fashion. He
waited for the counter to be clear before removing the paper to
place his usual order to the chipmunk behind the counter. "Could
I please have a Macchiato and a slice of carrot cake?" he smiled
as he hastily put the money for it before him. Once all was done
there, he nudged the number and paper to the side of the
counter, taking them one by one in his mouth to the closest free
table. He used the number as a paperweight for his poem, using
them both to save his table while he would go over to talk the
faun, who seemed like the right person he needed to see. "Hello,
I would like to participate in the poetry slam tonight, please."

---------------------------------------------------------
If there was one thing the chipmunk monster was familiar with,
it was the subtle body language of uncertainty, given that many
of his own kind were prone to such shifty movements. Still,
Niskel was clearly relaxed and comfortable in his environment as
he allowed Saiph time to examine that chalkboard menu on the
event that there was something there it desired. In the end, the
event sign caught its attention instead, earning a chuckling
smile from the rodent. “More passionate about poetry than
provender, eh? Good luck with that, little fellow. I’ll be here
if you change your mind.”
The trendy faun lifted up his horned head from his phone when
the ghostly figure approached, offering a warm, toothy smile. He
was a faun in the traditional sense, with the lower half of a
goat and the upper half looking much more human, aside from the
curled beige horns coming out at his temples and his pointed,
mobile ears jutting out from his curly mop of chestnut hair.
“You wanna share that at tonight’s event?” he asked as the child
held up that written poem, the green-gold eyes shining with
delight of the faun’s own to see such excitement glinting in
those button eyes. “That’s awesome, little dude. Can’t wait to
hear it.” He nudged the sign up clipboard toward the
sheet-covered monster, setting the pen down on it helpfully.
“Just put your name here and we’ll call you up when it’s your
turn, a’ight?” He tapped one of the slots a bit farther down the
page helpfully since a few monsters had signed up so far.
“Name’s Cerenos, by the way,” he noted with a tap on his name
tag, “if there’s something you need help with for the show
tonight, lemme know, ‘kay?”
Quadrupedal monsters weren’t terribly uncommon guests at the
cafe, so Niskel wasn’t terribly surprised to see a Temmie come
into the establishment, particularly given the piece of paper in
his mouth. “Absolutely; any flavorings for the macchiato?” the
chipmunk asked, adding any additional requests to the order
before giving the monster his total and exchanging the right
amount of currency for the transaction along with the order
number to be placed on the table of Bob’s choice. “Good luck!”
he offered as the furred beast headed off toward the left,
before returning his attention to the front to assist others as
they came in.
Once his interaction with the enigmatic child was done, the faun
was more than happy to turn his attention to the approaching
Temmie. It was rare for one of their kind to perform in such an
event, but that really only made it the more interesting to the
caprine humanoid. “Awesome!” Cerenos nudged the clipboard toward
Bob, offering the pen toward the four-legged man in what was
meant to be a helpful fashion. “Just need your name here and
then you can get comfortable wherever you like while we finish
setting up. We’ll call your name when it’s your turn to deliver
your piece, savvy?”
Despite the pleasant hum of patrons and industry that showed the
cafe was still abuzz at this advanced hour after the dinner
rush, orders came out of the kitchen quite promptly. The Captain
of the Royal Guard’s jasmine green tea and savory scone were
first up, delivered to whatever table Undyne had chosen for
herself with appropriate pleasantries from the server. The Tem’s
macchiato and carrot cake would not be long in following, giving
Bob just enough time to finish his interaction with the faun and
decide upon a place to roost in the interim before those were
brought out as well, the cake served in a rather shallow, wide
bowl to make it easier for the four-legged monster to enjoy it.

By: Luxin Date: March 29, 2018, 8:39 am
---------------------------------------------------------
A short few moments later, an elegant whistling tune had
gracefully weaved into the establishment following the gentle
opening of the front door; oddly enough matching up perfectly
with the beat and timing of the current track playing through
the overhead speakers. The tune came from none other than Luis.
He was wearing an amalgamation of casual and work clothes, for
one he had his snow boots and signature fuzzy collar jacket,
which was was draped over his uniform from the Waterfall Natural
History Museum. The uniform was a dark navy blue shirt and dress
pants set, with soft baby blue bio-luminescent accents at the
ends of each article of clothing and on the inside as well. The
logo of the museum was emblazoned on the right side of his chest
and gave of the same soft glow. 'Let us see what we have here..'
Politely making his way around other passing patrons, Luis
glanced around to take in the atmosphere. Espresso yourself was
as lively as ever, a relief, to be sure.
'Undyne? Here and now? Oho, now that is a rare sight. Hmm,
that button eyed youngster that showed up in the Ruins is here
too. I wonder what they're all about.' Luis thoughtfully
mused to himself as he continued to whistle along with the live
musical performance. 'I think I see one of those more
individualistic Tems too, Bob, I believe it was...' Tilting his
head and looking forward into the line of customers that came in
before him; sure enough; Luis saw Bob.
Soon enough; Luis had reached the front of the line and ceased
whistling. "Heeey there Niskel! lovin' the new hairdo— fits you
real well~" Offering a smile, Luis eyed the menu boards. "How've
you been? I up and just got off work, eheh~ Didn't have much
planned and figured I'd come by and see what all the buzz was
about this evening's event since Yanezi thought I'd like it. Is
she around by any chance? It seemed like her kinda thing." Luis
inquired, not having seen Yanezi upon entering, so he assumed
she was either not present or somewhere further inside. "Anywho,
could please I get a Vulkinian coffee with cream aaaaaaaaand,
two apple-peach scones~? That'd be grand~" Luis brought out his
wallet and payed up front before making his way to a seat with
his little number; either somewhere by himself or with a certain
feline should she perhaps be lurking.

By: Saiph Date: March 29, 2018, 10:34 pm
---------------------------------------------------------
A simple nod.
Button eyes turned their attention to the pen, and a long solid
moment passed before it gently lifted itself from the clipboard
and into the writing position against the designated slot. The
monster fluidly wrote out what appeared to be 'Saiph' in chicken
scratch before dropping the pen back onto the sheet, watching it
roll slightly before coming to a stop in nearly the same spot
the faun had set it. Making a plethora of crinkling noises, the
paper was stuffed back into the child's layers... and they took
the opportunity to ease their way from the banner-filled area
and towards one of the many corners of the cozy building. They
leaned their back against the firm wall behind them, sinking
until they plopped down on their behind... legs spread out
straight on either side as they slumped back. A gleam passed
over the plastic closures, Saiph turning their head to soak in
the appearance of the newcomer.
Whilst they weren't at all familiar with any of the faces in the
current location... or, really, much at all... Saiph could
certainly appreciate the diversity the underground had shown.
Never before had they seen such an incredible variance in
monster life, and it was all so exciting to walk the streets
beside these people. Despite their adamant curiosity and
adoration, the ghost couldn't find it in them to seek out the
company of any of the characters lingering about and instead
chose to continue watching them from afar.

With a bang the front door burst open in a flurry of sparklers
and harmless, magical flames in an array of warm hues. At the
centre of it all, a flaming pink monster wearing an…
interesting choice of a frilly light yellow dress, black leather
jacket, fishnet stockings and bright white knee-high boots
stepped through into the establishment striking a welcoming yet
dramatic pose with one arm in the air and the other looped
around the arm of another, cloaked monster whom was partially
dragged in due to the elemental’s excitement to line up at
the counter.
“GOOOOOOOOOD EEVVEEEENNNIIIIIIIIING
SNOOOOWDIIIIIIINNN!” she proclaimed before setting off a
series of small fireworks for emphasis of her cheerful demeanour
before eagerly turning to her companion,
"OhmygoshIabsolutelylooooooovePoetrySlamNightthankyousomuchforag

When it was her turn Fia cast a radiant white smile at the
employee working tonight and let go of her new companion’s
arm to let them be as they wished, “Heeellloooo~
I’ll be taking a piping-hot Vulkinian Coffee like always
aaaaaaaand just for something a little different, I’ll
take a couple of raspberry scones with them too! Oh and I'm also
paying for my friend here - you can keep the change for that
too! Thaaanks!”
She then paid for her order with an added tip for Niskel before
whisking away the table number, pausing to take in the ambiance
of the preparation of the upcoming event. She blinked a few
times with excitement, to which also seemed to have set off
tiny, silent fireworks from her eyes at every blink and
eventually, she noticed a very familiar monster. She then placed
her number back onto the counter and pointed to the table
already occupied by a golden-skinned monster, “Actually I
won’t need a new number, my one will also be the same as
that. Cheers!”
The firecracker turned to her friend to point in the direction
in where she was headed as a clear invitation to join her
whenever she was ready. Fia then spun around energetically,
skipped across the room and slumped onto the chair opposite the
winged monster with her elbows on the table and her hands
cradling her cheeks at either side of her broad smile,
“Weeeeeeelll hellloooo there! Fancy seeing you here, come
here often?” she jested with a giggle that rivalled the
jovial crackle of her flames, “So poetry night, huh?
Didn’t know you were a fan too – think you’ll
be joining in or just gonna enjoy the night?”
Her vibrant green eyes quickly took note of the other’s
attire, “Just finished a shift? How goes the museum?
Anything new?”
