Memories of the Goat Family (Asriel and Toriel)

Shortly after the events at the Core, Asriel had stopped in
front of the stone statue in Waterfall. He was carrying one of
the umbrellas which were supplied to monsters and a thoughtful
expression filled his eyes as he stared at the aged monument.
The prince then placed his umbrella on the statue, listening to
the music box play while the water dripping from the ceiling
made his fur droop and grew heavier along with the weight he
bore on his shoulders.
"Thank you, mummy," he said softly; voice just barely heard over
the music whilst he continued to stare at the rock formation,
"for still being supportive of me. Even after... everything."
Asriel covered his glowing red eyes with his hands and his
stitched-together-soul, oddly enough, shivered with
Determination.
"I did some things because I was curious, because I grew bored,
because I wanted to see if I could feel something..." he
continued with a sigh, "You've said that I'm was so brave even
though combat is no foreign thing to me - in fact I'm really
good at it. You also said for me to try my best to be good
because you know I am but let's face it, how can I be when I am
still that same monster who just messed with everything and
everyone. I know I denied it to Papyrus but, the more I think
about it, am I really that different? 'Flowey' is a dumb name I
came up with to lure others into a false sense of security -
after all, who would ever suspect a flower with a squeaky voice
to be... a murderer?"
The goat turned around, looking up at Toriel as he wiped some
tears from his eyes, "I don't understand. How am I a good boy?
You left daddy after he killed six humans and he hated himself
for it - be it directly by his hand or otherwise, but I have
taken countless lives and I actually enjoyed it. Over. And over.
And over. I even went as far as convincing others to do the same
or completely break down another's psyche simply because I
could. Why does he not earn your affections again but I
instantly do?"
Asriel's bottom lip quivered as the boy dropped to his knees and
sobbed, "Why do you still love me?"

Toriel had been following along closely behind Asriel, letting
him lead the way to the statue at Waterfall. She watched the
young Prince place the umbrella he had brought along on the
statue, smiling lightly as she also listened to the music box
play. It had been a while since she had visited the rest of the
Underground, she was greatful in how Sans had been helping her
get out of the Ruins more often, places like here were always
rather beautiful to her.
When Asriel thanked her, she looked down at him, looking a bit
confused, "Oh" She would place a hand on
his head and would ruffle the small tuft of hair on his head.
"Of course my dear".
When he spoke again, she would simply listen, letting him say
all that he needed to. When he finished, she would smile weakly,
getting onto her knees as well as she knelt beside him, placing
her hands in her lap. "Asriel" She began,
placing a hand on his shoulder, "You are not
Flowey, you have a heart, he did not, see this here" She
would carefully point to both the pendant and to the area on
Asriel's chest where a heart would be. "Would
Flowey be here apologizing to others for his actions right now?
Would he of tried as hard as you did to protect other monsters
back at the Core?" She shook her head. "No,
but you did. You are very different to Flowey, don't you ever
forget that" She took in a breath at the part about
Asgore, hanging down her head lightly as she closed her eyes.
"Because he was fully aware of what he was doing,
and had the option to not do it, I begged him not to Asriel, but
he still killed them, I believe we have other ways out of the
Underground, but your father, up until recent, seemed hellbent
on the path of using human souls to get us out. Children or not,
that I could not forgive. Though I see he is having a change of
mind.. You on the otherhand, haven't hurt anyone. Flowey did, a
monster with no soul, no heart, that wasn't something you could
control, that wasn't something you where in full control of. You
are now though, and you haven't hurt anyone" She would
put her hand back in her lap, opening her eyes, but keeping them
low.
"Because you're my baby boy, Asriel, you always
will be, I'll always love you, I don't hate your father"
She looked aside, "He's just made decisions with
his heart and soul that greatly hurt Mummy, you have not, does
that make sense?" She would ask, looking back to Asriel.
Toriel would take in a breath shortly after though, attempting
to gently rub a hand behind one of Asriel's ears.
"I know it may not seem like it. But I have missed
your father very much as well, but for the longest time, he
hasn't been the monster I fell in love with, all this killing
humans for their souls business, just wasn't like him to me. I
do hope to be friends with him again someday and I'll make sure
that whatever hardships he and I have, that it does not effect
you. I want to best for my little boy" She would give the
younger monster a warm smile, trying to clear his face of his
tears if he let her.

---------------------------------------------------------
"Well no, I wouldn't have apologised if I didn't get my soul and
heart back." Asriel agreed, though somewhat still insistent,
"But I still have... thoughts... thoughts I should not still be
having; but at the same time I do not want to act on them. Part
of the reason why I did those things was to see if I could feel,
but now that I finally can and look back, it feels just awful. I
can still feel a part of Flowey within my mind, prodding,
urging, tempting... what should I do mummy?" Asriel pleaded with
those big ruby-red eyes. The young prince truly wasn't sure what
to do and if his mother was willing to still accept and love
him, he very much needed her guidance.
The young prince plodded a few steps closer to hug his mother,
fully embracing her warmth and softness; a protection from the
world that only a mother could give. He listened to her word
carefully, contemplating on them, but there were also parts he
wasn't convinced of either. He looked down at the pendant which
contained his frantically beating red soul before shaking his
head, "No that's exactly the thing, I was in control of my
actions and I actually enjoyed it. Craved it. Beckoned others to
do the same. I don't understand how you can forgive me when I've
done so much worse. I had so much power over everything and
everyone - I still do... but I just don't know what to do about
it. I don't know. What should I do?"
The younger goat went quiet for a moment, "... I've also just
discovered that I can stop time." he confessed, frowning with
worry.
"I did it at the Core when Papyrus was really, really angry at
me... no body was aware of it - I don't think - except for Sans.
The two of us were the only ones who were able to move and he
spoke to me. Then later, time started flowing again. I don't
even know how that happened - but it did! I wasn't even able to
do that before when I was a flower. I'm scared, what if it
happens again?" he bleated, hugging his mother tighter.
Hearing that she didn't hate his father did bring an obvious
relief; his body grew less tense and more relaxed, he looked up
at her; a bit more hopeful, "You've missed him? Really? And
you're willing to be friends and not fight anymore?" Asriel said
in a hushed tone; he couldn't expect for them to fall in love
all over again and be a family unit once more - even a large
part of him wanted to - but if there was a chance that they
could be civil with one another it did bring him some hope.
Toriel would find that her son didn't resist her attempts of
wiping away his tears in an oh so familiar way; from so long
ago.
He still remembered.

"All monsters can have bad thoughts Asriel, what's
important is that you choose instead to act upon the good
thoughts,
and not the bad" When he pleaded with those big red
eyes, Toriel would close her eyes for a moment, pulling him
close in the embrace, "But you couldn't feel while
you where Flowey, if you could, you'd of felt what you're
feeling now when you think back on it, that makes a big
difference my young Prince. You could control what you could do,
but you couldn't control how you felt about it" She would
rub the top of his head with one hand, gently squeezing one of
his shoulders with the other. "Without your heart
and soul, you couldn't feel the full weight of what you where
doing, you couldn't feel bad about it, you do now. You only did
those things because you didn't have that golden soul of yours
my dear" She would rub her nose against his for a few
moments, managing a smile, "Your golden soul
couldn't ever want to cause anyone any harm"
"You should trust in your heart to do the right
thing, something I already trust Asriel, and if you ever doubt,
know that your father and I will always be here for you, we'll
never leave you. You have the chance now to turn things around
my dear" She wondered. Could he ever turn things around
in Sans' eyes now? She knew Flowey had done some awful things to
Sans in the past. But he was Asriel now. Maybe there was a
chance?
The Queen would look to Asirel in her arms, letting him explain
how he could stop time. She raised her eyebrow lightly, him
stopping time, and it didn't effect Sans? "What
did he say to you?" She would ask, before giving him a
warm smile. "Don't be scared my dear child, we'll
learn how to handle it, Sans could help you even if he's still
able to move whenever you do it, I could ask him about it, it's
all a matter of practice, I'm sure you'll learn how to use it
for good things in time" She didn't want Asriel to feel
as though his abilities where bad, or harmful, they could be
used for good things afterall.
She gave a weak smile at what he asked next. "Of
course, I doubt he missed grumpy old me though, Heheh"
She would look aside slightly, "I've always wanted
to be friends with him again. It just took until recent for your
father to have a wake up call on the thing he was doing that
broke my heart. I suppose he didn't quite get it when I tried to
get him to stop originally. But oh well, it's all in the past
now. If he's truly stopping his goal to kill humans, then I have
no reason to fight him, it was what broke us apart in the first
place afterall" She honestly hoped she really could get
along better with Asgore, after spending years of never wanting
to see him again. For Asriel's sake, she would try to give him
time's of seeing them happy together, even just as friends, if
it's what would make the child happy.
"May Mummy ask why you chose to come here in
particular, Asriel?"

The prince listened to his mother’s words carefully. It
wasn’t something new for him to hear, but rather, it was
something he needed to hear.
He needed guidance in this timeline.
To make a change; a change for the better rather than treating
monsters like toys puppeted by a child’s imagination and
all sorts of scenarios.
He may have had experienced many lifetimes and possibilities and
gained all sorts of skills on how to fight or how to talk to
people; but Asriel was still currently a child. A child
overwhelmed by all these emotions and was yet to be mature
enough on how to manage them properly. On top of that, he had
been corrupted by power which had been thrusted upon him –
a power of which he had yet to understand and manage properly at
the time – and drove him through the seemingly endless
possibilities through curiosity, the hunger for understanding,
entertaining darker outcomes but most of all, through
Determination to keep going. Never stopping in one place for
long and taking as many turns as he possibly could.
He looked to his hands. They briefly sparked with static and
caused for the fur on his hands to rise briefly; then followed
by brief flickers of lime green flames. Asriel also needed to be
taught how to manage his powers. He definitely knew how to
fight, and he was pretty darn good at it, but it was also a
drastic change from his limited abilities as a flower.
“I… I think you’re right Mummy.” the
younger goat murmured before clenching his hands into fists,
“I’m not sure if I could ask him to help me.
He’ll laugh at me.”
Sure it sounded like an immature excuse, but he’s still
young and needed to grow.
The prince then recounted in detail rather thoroughly about what
had happened during the ‘Time-Stop’ in Hotland,
starting from when he shouted with denial in retaliation to
Papyrus’ anger, how time stopped except, as far as he was
aware, only he and Sans were not affected, what Sans had said to
him and what he had said to the skeleton before finally
finishing with unfreezing time and how everything seemed to be
in motion once again as if nothing had interfered.
“You’d be surprised.” Asriel piped up,
“I mean, I understand that too. I’m just glad that
you two hopefully won’t be fighting anymore.”
He then paused to look at the statue, “I sometimes came
here to think – no matter what time of day or timeline.
The music and ambience here is oddly… soothing.”

---------------------------------------------------------
Toriel watched as Asriel looked at his own hands, causing a
brief spark and for his fur to rise a little bit, she smiled at
him before bringing her own hands together, keeping them at a
safe distance from the younger monster before giving off her own
flickers of bright purple flames. "We'll work on
that, you can practice with me and with others, I have no doubt
that your father and I can arrange for that" With a flick
of her hand, the flames would disappear, fading away into the
air.
The Queen would then give Asriel a small smile, shaking her
head, "Oh dear, no I'm sure he wouldn't laugh at
you" She would give his head another ruffle, gently
rubbing a thumb over the area where he would one day, grow horns
"I'm sure he want's to see you do better just as
much as your father and I. I'll talk to him, okay? We're close,
I'm sure we can work something out" She would glance
aside lightly, she didn't exactly want to bring up the dating
and such in front of Asriel. Not that it was a bad thing, but he
was already going through alot.
When Asriel began recounting what had happened between him and
Sans back at the Core, Toriel fell silent to listen, putting a
hand to one of her cheeks as she did. It was quite the story,
but it also had a lot of detail, so she didn't believe he was
making it up at all. Still. The talk of timelines and all, she
had only had experience with all this back when Flowey was still
around and when they had those headbands. "I'll
for sure speak to Sans about this okay my dear? If he's the only
other monster who can move around while you do this, he's the
best one to help in teaching you how to control it and use it
for good" She smiled hopefully and with encouragement.,
she believed in her son afterall.
"I'm glad too" She smiled,
"Things are looking promising for the
future"
She then nodded. "You're not wrong there, it is
soothing." She would close her eyes. It'd been a while
since she had even been to this part of the Underground, so it
was nice to be reminded of the nice spots like this one.
Soothing, it was certainly something Asriel needed, she didn't
blame him for wanting to come here, she was quite glad he had a
safe spot really. She made note to tell Asgore about it just in
case it was needed later when Asriel was with him and not her.
"I know your father wants to keep you around the
castle more for your sake, but I promise to visit often, I'll
bring your favourite pie each time too~" She would give
Asriel a warm smile, he had a lot of heavy thoughts on his mind,
she wanted to make sure there where some nice ones there too.
"And you're always welcome to visit me as
well"

Having escorted mother and child most of the way to that statue,
Asgore had found a suitable rock well outside of earshot for the
pair to bear his weight, leaning back against the rockface
behind him to ease the burdens he still felt after Zydras’
healing. The monarch was -- for the most part -- all right,
merely thirsty and in need of a good night’s sleep, though his
thoughts were already turning over many a troubled leaf. Still,
he gave them a respectful amount of time, determined to
persevere through his mild but persistent discomfort until they
were done.
Essurn stood vigilant watch over his King, hand lightly on his
sword’s hilt as he cast his gaze to and fro in habitual sweep of
his environs. Periodically it drifted further over to where
Asriel and Toriel had gone, though not within immediate sight of
the canine protector. It bothered him a bit, but as the ruler
had wanted to give them adequate space, he had complied. Still,
they had been waiting for some time, and he was concerned for
the caprine monster’s well being without adequate hydration and
rest. His tail wagged uncertainly as he thought about that,
trying to get a good look at the goat man without being too
obvious about it.
“Essurn, why don’t you speak your mind rather than brooding on
it?” Asgore’s voice was kind if a bit dry and gravelly.
The pallid guard’s tail stiffened along with his spine as he
stood straighter abruptly, feeling embarrassment at having been
caught red-pawed. He gave a little bark-cough to clear his
throat as his digits ran through the fur at the nape of his
neck. “I’m just concerned about your wellbeing and the fact that
they are taking some time,” he admitted finally in a low growl
that was rather sheepish sounding.
A small chuckle rumbled up that turned into a soft coughing, the
caprine lifting his hand to forestall the guard as he cleared
his throat and lungs for a moment before regaining his
composure. “Okay… you raise a fair point,” he admitted a little
breathlessly. “But, I doubt Toriel would take kindly to my
intruding, so perhaps you could simply go and check to ensure
they are both all right? I don’t wish to rush them, of course.”
Essurn’s tail floofed out slightly before smoothing again with a
little sigh, mildly relieved that he was being given permission
to go and investigate, even if it meant leaving the ruler
unguarded briefly. Still, as he glanced about he couldn’t see
any kind of immediate danger around them, and it’d been quiet
the whole time they’d been here, so it seemed that Asgore should
be all right for a few minutes alone. He certainly had proven
himself capable tonight, that was for sure. “I will do my best,
sire; just shout if you need me.”
“Don’t worr-- well, you will anyway, so try to worry less, I
suppose.” Asgore made a mild dismissing gesture, encouraging the
guard to go and check on the other two before letting himself
sit and relax with eyes half lidded, listening to Waterfall’s
ambience.
From just beyond where Toriel and Asriel were, soft, padding
footsteps could be heard along with the subtle jingle of armor
over the quiet sounds all around. Soon after that the source of
the noise came into view: the white, fluffy Essurn. His eyes
darted about to check his surroundings until finally landing on
the caprine pair and offering them an apologetic but also
reassuring smile. “M’lady, m’lord,” he offered politely to the
pair with a partial bow in respect to them.
The canine stepped closer, just so he could be heard without
having to raise his voice overmuch, seemingly mindful of the
peaceful ambience this place held. “Forgive me for the
intrusion, but I wanted to come and check on you to ensure
everything was okay and see if there was anything I could do for
either of you?” His tail wagged slightly with hopefulness and a
minor desire to please. “I know it’s getting quite late and we
both have a suitably long walk ahead of us, so I had hoped I
might be able to assist in some small way if either of you had
need of it.”

Asriel watch the amethyst flames flicker and dance about his
mother’s palms. Whilst the reflection of the flames could
be subtly seen bouncing off of his eyes, the young prince was
also reflecting with thoughts of his own. It was reassuring that
even after everything, even after the times he had killed his
own mother in some, previous timelines, his mother was still
willing to be there for him. The young child’s mind found
it remarkable and rather difficult to understand, even if he was
fairly confident that she had no recollection of such tragedies;
at least not first hand.
The kid would be lying to himself if he believed he wasn’t
worried about who might decide to enlighten her on that.
He nodded, feeling more confident than before, “Yeah,
that’s true. I know it’s going to take a while to
get a while to get used to… having a body and feeling
again… but I’d really like that. I’d like to
be shown and reminded of what could have been rather than what I
have seen time and time again.” Asriel affirmed before
glancing off to the side nervously when she disagreed about
Sans, “I-if you say so…”
There was another pause.
“Yeah… actually, there just might be a good chance
that he’ll listen to you.” the prince stated,
probably to reassure himself more than anything if he was
honest, “I would really like to see you often Mummy, it
doesn’t really matter where to me.”
Asriel’s ears flicked as he heard footsteps approaching
them and he nodded, “I guess it is getting
late…” he agreed softly before turning to the guard
and the prince asserted, “Essurn, I want my mother to be
escorted home so that she will be safe. I don’t really
care who is with her, I just want her to be safe. Please see to
it that something can be arranged but otherwise I think
we’re done visiting the monument… unless the former
queen has something to add?”
He then gave one fleeting glance back to Toriel, just in case
there might be anything else.

Toriel would watch the reflection of her flames as they danced
in the young Prince's eyes, she didn't know exactly what he was
thinking but she hoped they were happier thoughts.
She then nodded to the younger monster, "It may
take some time, but you're my strong little monster, you can do
it~" She would smile encouragingly, believing that he in
time would overcome the changes. She was glad though, already he
was wanting and liking the idea of being shown how things could
be. He still seemed unsure in regards to Sans though,
"I'll handle things with him my Dear, don't worry~
He'll listen" She smiled when he seemed to turn around on
the matter, she had a few ideas in mind on how to start such a
conversation with Sans already, but she'd deal with that later.
"You're welcome to whenever you'd like to, I
wonder if your father has my number still- Mmmm" She
glanced aside, of course he didn't after she left she had cut
off contact with him, "Perhaps we could work out
some easy way for you to be in contact with me, should you wish
to visit or meet with me someplace? We'll have to mention it to
Asgore, I'm sure we could also organize for times the three of
us could spend together also"
When the padded footsteps and armor jingle sounded, the former
Queen would raise her head up and look in the direction of the
noise. She smiled gently seeing that it was Essurn, bowing her
head back to him after he bowed to them.
It was getting quite late and it had been quite the long day,
Asriel for one could use a very big rest and should be in bed at
a good time for his age. Before she spoke up, the Prince did for
her which took her a bit by surprise especially in how he
requested that someone escort her home as well.
"O-oh! It's quite alright Asriel, I'll be okay on
my way home~" She smiled at him, ruffling the top of his
head gently again, "That aside, make sure this
young man gets lots of rest and is in bed at a good time for
me~" She gave a rather playful sort of smile,
"It would be nice to sort out some sort of easy
communication for Asriel to keep in touch with me, maybe by
phone message? Just in case he wants to drop by or wants for me
to visit? I don't mind the King having my number if need be in
that case. Aside from that though, I believe we're good to go
for now" She would lean down, wrapping her arms around
Asriel for a few moments in one last hug, "I'll
see you again soon, it's so wonderful to have my baby boy
back.." Getting back to her feet, she seemed to rub her
eyes very briefly and rather quickly before giving both Asriel
and Essurn a smile, allowing for enough time to exchange any
numbers or information that might be needed in regards to the
phone numbers so Asriel could message whenever he needed.
"Please make sure he and his father make it home
safety, Essurn, and please thank Asgore for allowing me to speak
to our son alone for a moment, I hope he has a speedy recovery,
I know he'll take good care of Asriel whenever he's in his
care-- He is also welcome to contact me if he needs too, you
take now~!" Glad she got to speak to Asriel before the
day ended, she could now head home with a more level head, she
had lots on mind given how the day had gone, including thoughts
on Asgore and happier ones at that which was quite the welcoming
change. With all being said and done, she would give a wave to
the two before beginning to head off, with or without escort.

As ever, Essurn was polite, attending to the young noble with
keen brown eyes as Asriel made his demands of the guard
regarding the emeritus Queen’s escort. The canine looked
thoughtful for a moment before Toriel disrupted that train of
thought with her own insistence on being fine on her own,
prompting the officer to smile a little apologetically to the
young goat. “There have been no further aftershocks, and there
wasn’t much debris on the way here, so I’m certain she’ll be
just fine on her own, m’lord. She is a very capable monster,
after all, as we saw tonight, and since she hasn’t done anything
wrong, legally I cannot force an escort on her.” He supposed
that he might’ve tried to, but realistically that would only end
in headaches for everyone involved.
“I’m certain His Majesty will arrange for some kind of
communication means in short order, likely either a mobile phone
or computer, but in the meanwhile we can work with your number
so young Asriel can stay in touch regularly,” Essurn affirmed
with a nod as the caprine matron gave her newly reborn child
that warm hug. There were certainly a number of questions in the
guard’s mind about the hows and whys, but for now, it wasn’t his
place to ask, so he held his tongue, simply exchanging her
number for Asgore’s so they could at least communicate as
needed.
“Certainly, m’lady. We’ll be careful returning home and if
there’s anything you need assistance with along the way, don’t
hesitate to reach back out to myself or the King for it. I’m
sure that Jhera will ensure that His Majesty has a swift
recovery in the days to come as well.” The canine guard reached
for the young princeling’s hand to escort him back to where
Asgore was waiting. “Take care of yourself, m’lady Toriel,” he
bade her as well in farewell, soon leading the child with him
back the short distance he’d come.

In the interim that Essurn had been gone, the monarch had
slipped into a very light doze, the sound of approaching
footsteps pulling him out of it to lift his head and look at the
pair with a warm smile, particularly for his reincarnated
offspring. “I hope you and your mother had a nice chat?” he
wondered aloud in supportive tones when the two were close
enough for reasonable conversation, seeing as how he didn’t
think being loud would be particularly productive given his
earlier injuries at the time.
“Lady Toriel bade me to thank you for allowing her the
opportunity to speak with him,” Essurn chimed in helpfully,
though allowed Asriel plenty of room to say his peace in the
interim once that duty was fulfilled.
“Well, he is as much her son as mine,” Asgore affirmed in a low
rumble. Certainly he might not see eye to eye with his former
wife all the time, but it was definitely something that he
wanted to do right by his child in allowing the boy time with
both parents as their schedules permitted.
“Of course, Sire. I did provide your contact number and obtained
hers so that you may further communicate on the matter of
further visits.” The canine was prompt to offer the appropriate
details regarding that to the King, letting go of the kid’s hand
in the process.
“Thoughtful of her; I did not wish to press.” The tall caprine
held his arms out for the boy to encourage him to come in for a
hug before standing and moving to carry the lad on his good side
and hip. Certainly he knew that Asriel was more than capable of
walking, but given their height difference. the long walk, and
the late hour he wanted to give the lad the opportunity to rest
in his arms as well as better talk to him along the way. “I
still have your room just like it used to be,” he rumbled in
soft tones, moving to begin heading back across Waterfall to
take them home to the castle. “But if there’s anything you want
to change about it, you can let me know.” Gently he reached over
with his injured arm to fondly caress the furry white crown, the
touch tender and the look in his eyes grateful for whatever
force had given him his son back. They had much to discuss in
the days to come, and there were many things that the young
noble would need to learn under professional tutelage, but for
now those concerns were set aside, content that he had his life,
his son, and at least the chance to potentially befriend the
person who had once upon a time been a best friend.
It was a start.
