The soft, magically simulated light of mid-afternoon cast long
shadows in places over the long stretches of bog that were so
characteristic of Waterfall. There were higher, drier points to
be sure, where the ceiling stars could be enjoyably gazed upon,
but for the two figures making their way through it now, there
was plenty of mud and muck to be seen along with the
phosphorescently glowing lakes and rivers that added an eerie,
yet somehow calming air.
Papyrus’ boots squelched softly in the marshy mud as he mulled
over his sibling’s words, something about the way he had said he
needed a nap niggling at the back of his mind even as he picked
his way carefully through the treacherous but familiar paths
just behind Undyne. Had he been wearing his usual wading boots
for patrolling the swamp the skeleton wouldn’t have particularly
cared so much about his steps, but these boots weren’t quite as
waterproof, and so he was more cautious.
Nearly stepping into something quite a bit deeper as his
thoughts strayed, the trainee finally put that worry away,
deciding that he would simply ask Sans about it later if it was
still bothering him then. There was, after all, nothing he could
do about it now, so it was merely putting his neckbones at risk
by dwelling on it instead of his footing.
“So what’re we going to practice today,
Undyne?” he piped up, sparing a glance for the much more
aquatic companion before resuming his attentive picking through
the reeds as they headed in what looked like the direction of
her home. “Target practice?” He’d been
trying to emulate her skill with throwing his own bone spears
for a bit and felt he was getting better, but knew it wouldn’t
hurt to practice that. “Hand to hand?” He
was already feeling a bit bruised but, it wouldn’t do to shirk
on that front just because he was a little sore.
“Maybe some staff on spear fighting?” He
knew his knuckles would feel that one for a bit, but the grace
and fluidity of it fascinated him, admittedly. It also seemed
less… murdery than some others. “Or something
new?”

Undyne was also wearing casual clothes for today - a vibrant red
tank top and three-quarter black leggings. Both garments
appeared to be made of a water resistant, shiny material which
was dotted with specks of water droplets sliding down its
surface. Her attire complimented her long fin-like hair, which
trailed behind her like a red ribbon dancing in the wind as she
waded rather fluidly through the marsh.
"I was thinking a bit of everything and make the most of today.
Sorry to pull you away from your brother, but today is one of
the few days when I have found time to check up on you and see
where you're at. Things have been rather nuts lately. I also
heard about the extra patrols you've done too - good work
Papyrus." she replied with her usual enthusiasm. The fish
warrior seemed to be in relatively high spirits, perhaps it was
because of her being in her element with the water and building
up the hype for the upcoming spar. She then blinked as she
remembered something, "Oh yeah, how's the cooking going? Tried
branching out yet?"

Stepping with quick but careful steps after the woman, Papyrus
felt his cheekbones warm at her unexpected praise.
“Well, it seemed the least I could do after all
the things that seems to be happening lately,” the sentry
mused with modesty, though his features were bright with his
smile. “I appreciate your taking the time to train
me, Undyne. I imagine you must be very busy indeed with…”
He paused to flourish his hand expressively in the air
“...everything going on.” In truth, the
skeleton wanted to know more, but didn’t feel quite ready to
broach the subject just yet as they marched through the marsh,
wanting to be on more level footing for such a discussion.
“Oh!” The subject of cooking brightened the
lights of his eyes with cheer at this beloved topic.
“It’s been great! I found this new variation on
spaghetti I want to try with mushrooms and I think I finally
found something even Sans will eat for breakfast.” Glance
slipped to the corners of his eye sockets with a faint frown,
though his complaint was tinged with affection.
“Or, at least with enough ketchup.”

"Nah cut the modest bullcrap! You knew what needed to be done
and you went ahead and did it. I like seeing that." she
commented with a dismissive wave of a hand in the air, just as
they reached a familiar clearing in Waterfall filled with
targets, dummies and some other combat equipment left forgotten
to the side. The nearby walls and ground were riddled with dents
- likely scars from all the other times training had commenced
here. A single glowing spear sparked into existence and landed
in her left hand.
"And of course, it's my responsibility to make sure that all
guards and trainees are in tip-top shape; and assess if they are
really up for what is demanded. Keeping the king and monsters
everywhere safe from harm will always be our top priority - even
our comrade-in-arms."
Suddenly the ground beneath Papyrus began to glow spots of cyan.
The hardened earth rumbled and shifted, just about to make way
for the handful of blunt spears which would surely follow.
"Always be ready."
Immediately afterwards another handful of glowing blunt spears
appeared behind and either side of him. Then one by one they
were catapulted at the skeleton monster; each one coming from
peculiar and awkward angles.
"Always stay in shape."
A series of flat, wooden dummies flipped up from the ground and
stood at a ninety-degree-angle with illustrations of figures of
what were deemed as dangerous and harmless monsters. Here,
Undyne would be assessing how quickly Papyrus was able to take
down the rogues and if there were any accidental slip-ups with
the 'citizens'.
"Always keep your skills sharp-"
She even threw in a blunt, golden spear which tore across the
field to his right just as Papyrus reacted to one of the
'pop-ups' for good measure.
Her tone shifted to one of a more passionate one; perhaps it
was from the excitement of the tasks at hand and it was clear
that what she was about to say rang true to her soul.
"-and as cheesy as it sounds, always stay true to what's in your
heart. There's no point protecting monsters if you're just an
empty shell of metal. To be a guard, you need PASSION!
DEDICATION! AND LOYALTY!" she proclaimed, her voice growing
louder and more eager with each passing word.

Papyrus couldn’t help the soft glow of his soul through his
turtleneck shirt at warrior's passionate rebuttal, feeling
immense pleasure at such enthusiastic compliments.
“You’re right, Undyne. I just did what any member
of the Royal Guard worth his dust would have done.”
He was still feeling that warmth as they crested onto the
familiar training hill, his gaze casting over the accoutrements
scattered around there to make sure nothing had changed since
his last visit, knowing such details were important in the heat
of combat. His steps were confident but light as he made his way
toward the center, listening to the captain’s speech with an
eager nod, familiar with the words but feeling the passion
behind them just as strong every recounting.
There was a sudden familiar thrum of magic beneath him as he
reached the center of that makeshift arena, his gaze only going
down for a split second to confirm where those spikes were about
to erupt before he pitched his weight forward into a controlled
roll, opting to leave the fishing pole still in his hand on the
ground halfway through it.
No sooner had Papyrus finished the roll back onto his feet than
he found those spears surrounding him with a menacing gleam. He
had no time for thinking as he simply reacted with a mix of
natural agility and their long training sessions, vaulting
forward at a sprint that led into several more acrobatic
movements. Some of the spears barely missed shearing the fabric
of his clothes or coat as he twisted through them, but he landed
at the end of the onslaught with his dignity and garments
intact, eyes now glowing hotly with the heat of the moment
coursing through his marrow.
It appeared there would be no rest for the weary -- something
the trainee was rather used to -- as the dummies started to flip
up randomly around the skeleton, so he used a combination of his
hearing and vision to locate each foe and friendly in rapid
succession. The foes each had a single but no doubt lethal bone
erupt from their stuffed innards to send a cascade of cotton to
the ground, whereas the friendlies were surrounded in protective
bone walls, leaving them intact.
The final, almost underhanded blow would have likely caught the
monster unprepared even just a week or so ago, but today Papyrus
put his back to it with confidence as a sudden bone-spear
appeared in hand, a quick motion deflecting the reversing weapon
into the soil at his feet. Beaming, he jumped up onto the now
grounded weapon at its 45-degree, balancing on it with his
booted feet while grinning at her broadly as she practically
shouted to the ceiling stars. “I am PASSIONATE! I
am DEDICATED! I am LOYAL!” he decreed fervently,
brandishing his weapon in a bold flourish as he awaited her next
move.

The fish warrior leaned lightly against the spear in her hand as
she watched Papyrus' movements carefully. Her sharp, yellow eye
didn't miss a beat and her brow gradually rose as she noticed
the improvement since last time. The fish warrior particularly
approved of the precision of his strikes and the bone walls
encompassing the 'civilians' and she let out a hearty, "HA!"
just as the golden projectile was deflected and sent flying.
"What was that? Didn't quite hear you! You're gonna have to
speak up!" she yelled even louder; her voice ricochet off the
walls and made the stalactites above shudder and dance in their
places. Soon afterwards more blunt spears were summoned before
being sent flying towards Papyrus at his front, back, left and
right by the dozens. It didn't stop there however, as the
seconds ticked by, the spears increased in numbers and speed.
The warrior then shifted her stance to that of a more readied,
half-crouch one as the number of blunt spears had increased
exponentially. As the assault continued, she spoke up again with
a smirk, "New variation? What kind of mushrooms? Why don't you
recite the recipe for me?"
The series of headless spears continued to rain upon the
skeleton, "Man if that guy eats any more ketchup I wouldn't be
surprised if his bones started to turn pink from it!"

Papyrus glanced quickly to the ceiling, briefly concerned about
the rocky outcroppings tearing loose and landing on his head as
the cavern shook. He wasn’t given long to consider that
possibility as the Captain began a fresh assault, though he
bellowed his assertion a second time as he went, hard enough to
make his own rib cage rattle.
His soul fluttered with excitement as he danced and twisted his
way through the glowing spears, many skimming within centimeters
of his person. It was like poetry, the rhythm coming faster the
longer they went until he was simply one with the motions, a
bony bundle of pure reaction and reflex. It felt good to be
practicing like this again, and hopefully leaving a positive
impression on his potentially future boss.
Those keen eyes were easy to feel on him as he leapt and
twirled, discarding his bone staff back into the ether so that
he could use both hands, the increased frequency of the
projectiles making him use Undyne’s own spears against her,
deflecting them into the earth in a carefully balanced dance
that avoided the training dummies still scattered around. It
wouldn’t do to lose points for accidentally hitting one of the
still protected civilians, after all.
“The blue ones here in Waterfall or in the caverns
near Snowdin,” he answered, even as he ducked one spear,
having to crouch down on one leg, the other stretched out to the
side before it pulled him back upright, sidestepping another
hurtling javelin. He knew her asking him about the cooking now
was a ploy to distract him, but he was extremely determined
today to show her all his improvements, even if it meant going
home absolutely bone weary.
Nyeh heh. Sans would be proud.
“Chop the onions and garlic!” He felt the
warmth of the energy spear as it passed in front of his
nose-hole while he played limbo with it. “Saute
them in oil!” He somersaulted back toward the fish woman
as a quintet of spears tried to skewer him from all sides.
“Chop tomatoes, add to pot with juices!” He
grabbed the spear that tried to shear him as he landed with a
quick sidestep, using it to deflect two more.
“Simmer, then add wine and seasonings!” He
threw himself backwards at an awkward limbo position as the
spear in his hands faded, forcing him to act dramatically to
save his clothes. “Apply blender.” He felt
like he was in a bit of a blender himself as he had to use his
own magic to yank himself above the spears trying to skewer him
into the earth, flinging himself several yards away to land with
a practiced roll, on his feet running even as he continued his
recital. “Add mushrooms and fresh basil! Continue
to simmer until done!” He could feel his soul fluttering
against his rib cage as a modicum of fatigue started to catch up
to him, but he refused to slow down his deadly dance with those
spears. “Serve over prepared spaghetti
noodles!”
He finished the recipe with a dramatic flair as he stole one of
her spears from the air again, spinning it in a dizzying speed
to repel what felt like a dozen spears as they chinked against
the defending weapon. “It could be a nice color on
him,” the skeleton mused, starting to pant softly as his
bones protested the strain they were undergoing. He knew he
couldn’t stop yet though. Not until he simply couldn’t anymore.
It was just how training with Undyne was.
But, perhaps he could go on the offensive.
“Hey Undyne!” he called, grabbing another
spear even as he vaulted backwards, arm raised to return the
weapon back to its rightful owner for a half second before he
chucked it at his teacher with all his might.
“Catch!”

By: Undyne Date: September 7, 2017, 11:39 am
---------------------------------------------------------
Undyne would have been lying to herself if she didn't feel the
same rush and excitement Papyrus felt as she continued the
flurry of spears to storm in from multiple directions. A few
beads of sweat formed and rolled down her smooth, blue scales as
her sequences of randomly appearing headless spears charged in
on the skeleton.
"Chop? That works since you can't pet the enemy that way - but I
would have also accepted pounding them into a paste! HA!" she
chuckled with great enthusiasm, "You're right though, those blue
ones would suit him."
The projectiles which were deflected and buried into the ground
dispersed; sounding an awful lot like shattering glass while the
other cyan spears which were knocked off-course froze mid-air a
short distance away. Soon enough the sequences of spears came to
its conclusion, leaving quite a large number of them floating in
the air all around the trainee. What did catch Undyne by
surprise was when he hurdled her own spear right back at her!
Instinctively, the aquatic monster leaned back just in time for
the spear to miss skewering her but she then leaned forward just
as quickly to catch the projectile in between her razor-sharp
teeth! A muffled laugh escaped from Undyne before she spat out
the blunt spear; allowing for it to land on the ground with a
loud clatter before dispersing.
"That was quite the sight to see Papyrus, you even got the moxie
to throw one at me! There's just oooone thing though~" she
closed her eye just as her grin stretched further across her
face. Undyne had brought her left hand up to shoulder-height and
balled it into a fight fist and Papyrus would feel a
hot-yet-painless pressure grasp firmly onto his soul; locking
him into place with a green glow, "It's not over yet."
The floating spears from before all had cracks suddenly tear
cross the surfaces simultaneously and the out layer shattered to
reveal that they were truly golden spears all along. So as one
so familiar with what that meant would expect, that the entire
sequence of spears the skeleton had dodged and deflected came
racing back towards him in the reverse order.

The sight of the piscean woman grabbing her own spear by the
teeth was simultaneously impressive and juuust a little bit
scary to watch, though Papyrus found himself making mental note
of that for in the future even as his rib cage heaved in this
brief moment of respite that surprise at given him.
“Well, heh, learned from th-”
Papyrus cut off abruptly as he felt that familiar verdigre power
enfold him, preventing him from further acrobatics as he felt
almost boxed in by Undyne’s ability. Fingers tightened with an
audible creak around the sudden green spear in his hands,
forcing himself to straighten and face this next onslaught head
on as the glow in his eyes brightened to a softly flickering
flame. He swiveled in place in a rapid pirouette to see where
all the spears were coming from, noting with a mild feeling of
dismay that they were all golden now.
No, The Great Papyrus can do this!
His pep talk and preparation lasted all of milliseconds before
the skeleton began that deadly dance again, cognizant somewhere
in the back of his mind that his teacher had no intent of
killing him, but with everything else he was treating it like a
real attack, the sounds of spear against spear and shattered
glass filling the meadow again as he poured every ounce of
concentration he had into what he hoped was her final foray.
His clothes felt damp with his own sweat as the last spear was
deflected into the earth to shatter, the only thing keeping the
skeleton upright as his whole body trembled the Captain’s
rooting power. Papyrus sunk the green spear into the ground to
lean against, his palms slick as they tried not to slide down
the smooth surface. “Good… hah… one….” he
panted, finding his throat to be bone dry and much desirous of
fluids to counter the perspiring effort he had just given. He
knew the second Undyne released him he was going to collapse to
the ground, but in the moment he felt a sense of pride that he
had gotten through everything unharmed for a change. It was
progress, and he hoped put him one step closer to that coveted
position in the Royal Guard in the fish woman’s eyes.

Footsteps echoed softly as Undyne made her way to the skeleton
monster and any remaining spears present shattered one after the
other the closer she got to him. That grin of hers never left
her face and with a flick of her left hand she released her iron
grip upon his soul. The warrior offered a hand to help him up
back to his feet. She watched him carefully at first, just to be
certain that he wasn't seriously injured before they attempted
to move. After a few steps she delivered a friendly, yet still
relatively hard, punch to his humerus, "Heh, wow, not a scratch
this time! You must have been pretty busy yourself to have
improved this much. Why don't we head back to mine for some
tea?"
Undyne's gaze drifted to the glittering ceiling of Waterfall,
privately admiring the shimmering beauty shrouded by the shadows
of the ceiling. She then withheld a sigh, that same beauty she
admired also prevented every monster from seeing and feeling any
liberty. That plight monsters were living through only filled
the blue monster with determination to keep soldiering through
the crown's quest for freedom.
Her house was within sight now, and it didn't take long to reach
it either. The front-side-wall of her home was patched up after
she had thrown her very own grand piano out of it in a fit of
rage and while the piano had been removed since then, there was
still a slight concave into the stone wall at her front yard
from where it had slammed into. Once at her door she raised a
finger and summoned a tiny spear, slipped it into a lock and
turned it clockwise until the unhinging clicks of it unlocking
and the door opened wide to welcome the pair in.
"Take a seat, you've earned it." she said casually as she
grabbed a towel a nearby towel and tossed it to the trainee
before turning on the kettle. Undyne leaned back onto the
counter as she waited for the water to boil.
