Re: We've Got Some Ketchup To Do!

“Paper plates are for picnics, Sans,”
Papyrus asserted with a mild squint, though the reminder was
meant to be more educational than biting. “It’d be
wasteful to use them at home.”
Seeing his brother content and happy was enough to make the
younger relax as well, able to feel just how nice that evening
had been for his sibling. He really needed that
night out. Listening to the detailed explanation, the
guard trainee couldn't help but chuckle at the mental image of
his brother drinking ketchup in such a fancy way.
“Thanks. I’m glad you two had such a good
time.”
“Hey now, don’t cheat,” the skeleton
playfully ribbed as he saw the other using that bit of blue
magic to move his lure enticingly.
At the question of where to next take Toriel for another outing,
the younger glanced over to Sans, browbone’s shadow deepening in
an apparently thoughtful furrow. “Well, why not
bring her home?” he suggested. “It’s quiet,
discrete and I’m sure we can make something she’ll enjoy! Maybe
even my spaghetti!” He reached over to lay a hand on
Sans’ femur supportively, though a faint hint of mischief danced
in his eyes. “Well, I’m glad you found someone who
laughs at all your bad jokes too.”
Papyrus snorted as his sibling picked up on that easy gag,
knowing the elder monster certainly wouldn’t pass up such an
opportunity. “Well, with all the ketchup you eat
I’m sure they’ll find you quite app-eel-ing, brother.” It
was a bit of a stretch, but he grinned at his pun nonetheless,
giving his line another tantalizing wiggle.

"Sure it's a bit of a waste, but think about
the time we could save if we did that." he added in
futile attempt to win his brother over with the idea.
"Cheers bro, means a lot." he replied
softly, a few stupid chuckles slipped out as he recounted on the
fond memory of that night before he quickly cleared his
'throat'.
He then side-glanced at his brother with a mischievous grin,
"I'm not stopping you from doing the same so
it's then not cheating."
"Bring her home, huh? Not a bad idea. I had
thought about that before, but uh, thought I'd check with you
first." he continued before pausing briefly as he felt a
tug on the line, causing for him to fall forward slightly before
gaining a better footing so as to not fall in. The Sentry then
heaved at the line before rapidly spinning at the wheel to reel
it in. For now though, there was a struggle between skeleton and
fish, "Honestly I reckon she would be keen
to try your spaghetti. I've kinda told her quite a bit about you
on occasion."
In response to Papyrus' gesture, Sans continued to grin and
responded with a brotherly fist-bump to Papyrus' Humerus.
At that last joke Papyrus quipped with, Sans let out a loud
snort of laughter and thus resulted in him loosening his grip
and losing the bait to the fish as it disappeared into the
depths.
"You totally did that on purpose." he
accused in jest before reeling in the empty line, re-baiting it
and casting it once again into the pond.

“I thought the dish washing earlier was quality
bonding time, Sans. Surely you wouldn’t want to give that
up?” Papyrus asked with a sly sidelong glance. He already
was fairly certain he knew the answer to that question, but it
merited at least a passing askance to confirm.
A sly glance was directed at the shorter skeleton, eyes
sparkling softly when Sans encouraged him to use the same
magical tactics. In truth the elder did have a point, even if it
was still mildly cheating in his opinion. “Nyeh…
you would say that. You’re just lucky I can do that, you
bonehead.” The term was given with endearment rather than
derision as reached out to tease his own lure with a little of
that gravity altering magic, fingers tweaking idly to keep the
movements semi-random. Couldn’t hurt, right?
“Well, thank you for considering my feelings too,
brother,” Papyrus declared, splaying a bony hand over his
sternum for mildly comical emphasis, though he’s quick to reach
for his sibling when the shorter monster nearly took a dive
before rectifying his center of gravity. “Woah,
careful, Sans.” Attention returned to his own aquatic
activity as the other seemed to get things well in metacarpals,
though the news that Toriel might want to try his spaghetti only
brightened his grin, the pole only just balanced between his
knees while his hands went up to his flushed cheekbones.
“Really?!?! Wowie!” A tug on his pole
forced him to quickly resume his grasp on it, attempting to reel
in the fish slowly, unsure if it was actually hooked yet.
“I’m so excited! I’ll have to try this new
variation I’ve been working on for her.”
The stocky sentry’s laughter was contagious as he lost his fish
and accused his peer of making that joke on purpose, prompting a
sly grin from Papyrus. “Well, you’ll never know,
will you?” he observed drily, though in the process of
his distraction lost the interest of the fish he’d had tugging
on his bone before. “I’m starting to think we’re
both boned on this bet though. Nyeh heh.”

"No, but there are other things we can do.
Like fishing for example." the stout one replied simply
before nodding from time-to-time as he listened to his brother
speak. The skeleton blinked as he felt another tug at the line a
few times. His grin widened as he started reeling the fish in
again and once again Sans found himself in another tug-o-war,
"Really, really. New variation, huh? I'm
sure that she would love it. How are they different?" he
asked curiously.
Sans started pulling back on the rod a bit more as the fish he
was struggling with appeared to grew weaker and weaker by the
minute, "I dunno, I wouldn't speak so soon
bro." he announced, his voice sounding a little louder
from before with excitement. Nearby Echo Flowers seemed to have
picked up on that and also echoed back the same thing in what
seemed to be a domino effect of sorts. By this point Sans had
gotten to his feet and slowly started to walk backwards as the
fish desperately tried to fight back, until finally, with one
final pull a silver fish leapt out of the water with a bone and
line lodged in its throat. It landed on the rocky surface nearby
and flopped about frantically.
"Huh. Looks like I win." he said,
stating the obvious before casting the taller brother a smirk,
"I hope you like ironing bro. Got alotta
creased shirts lying in the corner of my room."

The glow in Papyrus’ eyes dimmed a little as he grew thoughtful.
“I read somewhere once that it’s the toughest
things you do with someone that bring you the closest
together.” This weighty thought bogged him down briefly
before the amber ring brightened and he looked to his sibling.
“I guess that’s why we’re so close, huh brother?
Because we’ve been through so much together.” He steered
clear of precise and potentially touchy topics, having already
seen once for today how the elder felt about certain ones.
“I guess that’s why Undyne and I got so
close…” He trailed off as that thought led down a darker
path, soon shunting it aside in favor of living in the moment as
he jiggled his fishing line a little more, hoping to net himself
a fish before Sans.
“Well, I recently found this cookbook that talks
about using mushrooms in the sauce!” The skeleton grew
excited as he spoke passionately on the topic. “I
remember seeing some in a small cave near Snowdin, and in some
places around the marsh too.” Eyes flickered eagerly.
“Since they are blue maybe they’ll even turn the
sauce a little blue. Blue spaghetti! Can you imagine it
Sans?” His grin somehow grew broader. “It’d
match you! Then you wouldn’t have to worry about staining your
jacket if you fell asleep in a plate of it.” Somehow it
seemed like this might have occurred previously.
Papyrus turned to look at his brother upon that assertion,
browbone lifting with surprise. “Oh! Oh!
Oh!” His own empty line wasn't too bothersome as he found
Sans’ struggle much more interesting to cheer on, giggling at
the almost comical reeling in of such a stubborn fish.
“So you do!” The younger clapped cheerfully
for the other’s success, laughing at the rhetorical question.
“Well, at least I got to see you get a little
workout in,” he teased lightly, poking at the side of the
hoodie with a bony finger. “You’re gonna need that
exercise if you expect to keep up with me, brother.”
Opening up a section of the tackle box, Papyrus reached out to
the flopping fish with a touch of blue magic, long phalanges
hooking under the gills while he removed the hook and then
secured the catch in the special section, carefully filling it
with a little of the water to submerge it. “Maybe
I should let you catch the rest of dinner since you’re clearly
better at this than I am!”

"Hmm, I suppose that could be true. Then
again any time spent together, I reckon, is pretty valuable."
he hummed in thought before shrugging it off, [font=comic
sans ms]"But if it makes you happy, I'll help you with the
dishes more often. 'N' yeah, it's been a long road but we're
getting through it just fine. Nothing life throws at us can stop
us bro."
He grinned at his brother, raising a fist for an awaited
fist-bump.
There was a concerned glimmer in his eye sockets when he noticed
the change of tone when Undyne was brought up but didn't say
anything in the regard when his brother decided to talk about
something else instead. He chuckled softly, a hint of an
embarrassed guilt strung in with it, "It's
that bad huh? Still, blue spaghetti sounds pretty cool. It would
match your 'Blue Attacks' too huh? I'm sensing a theme here, but
since it sounds so cool I doubt I'll feel 'blue' about it.
Heh."
After catching the first fish Sans sat back down beside the
other skeleton. He patted down what little sweat beads had
appeared about his skull with the end of his hoodie's sleeve,
"Whelp. That's my exercise for the year.
Felt the burn. Don't wanna get too buff though. No one likes a
bulky bones. Should be enough for me to catch up with you
right?" he teased back before finding himself shrugging
again, rebaiting the line and casting it back in.
Within seconds Sans felt a tug at his line - a heavy one at
that.
"Woah. You weren't kidding Pap." he
gasped.
He blinked with surprise as he dug his feet into the stone and
pulled back on the rod all he could; alas it soon became
apparent that he was losing the battle as he was slowly being
dragged towards the water.
Then all of a sudden the line felt loose as the fish on the
other line decided to swim directly at the brothers and leapt
out of the water at them.
"NNGGAAAAHHHHHH!" the oversized fish proclaimed as she landed
behind the pair and struck a heroic pose as she flicked her
fin-like red hair behind her, "Papyrus! Thought I'd find you
here! I've been looking all over for you!"
Sans narrowed his eye sockets with some bewilderment at the
guard. He leaned forward slightly and asked somewhat comically,
"Were you... were you just lurking down
there this whole time? That's, uh, kinda creepy."

“I do think any time we can manage together is
valuable, Sans.” Papyrus’ expression turned warm.
“But I do appreciate your help with household
chores like the dishes. It gives us that much more time
together.” Returning the grin, he met the fistbump with a
soft clack of his proximal phalanges, surprised to hear the echo
flowers mimicking the sound as it quietly reverberated.
“Weeeeeeeeell…” Papyrus drawled out,
pretending to look sheepish for mild comedic effect before
ruining it with a dry chuckle as Sans went on. “I
guess you’re not wrong about a theme, brother.” He
reached over to lightly finger the sleeve of the skeleton’s
cornflower blue jacket. “Though, I’ve heard it
said that no two monsters see a color the exact same
way.” Expression tilted with a touch of mischief.
“I suppose you could call it a pigment of our
imaginations.” His grin was genuine now, clearly holding
back some nyeh heh hehs that wanted to slip out.
Sans’ exaggerated motions only made the lankier brother laugh
harder, the back of his metacarpal bones pressed against his
teeth as if it would really stop the laughter from leaking out.
“Brother, even as lazy as you are I doubt any lack
or abundance of exercise is going to make you a bulky
bones.” His tone was lighthearted in its teasing even as
he set the tackle box down, moving to take his own fishing rod
in hand once more.
Before he could get a chance to do that, however, his sibling’s
line snagged on what was clearly a humongous catch, resulting in
the younger skeleton leaping behind Sans to wrap his arms around
the other’s torso, trying to lend his own leverage as his heels
dug into the soft earth beneath them. The Great Papyrus grunted
mightily, the effort he put in wholehearted in its intensity.
Unfortunately their “catch” decided to release the line,
resulting in Papyrus hitting the rock behind him with a painful
crunch as he abruptly sat, yanking Sans back into his lap with
him in the surprise of the moment. “Ow,” he
grumbled under his breath even as Undyne vaulted from the
formerly still pond like a leaping dolphin.
“Undyne?!” Way to go, Captain Obvious.
“Looking for me?” Papyrus’ tone was
puzzled. It was his day off. He was spending it with Sans for a
change. Undyne hadn’t contacted him in what felt like ages.
Everything about her sudden appearance was abrupt, odd, and
disruptive.
And frankly, pretty standard for the piscean woman.
“You could have just called me,” the
skeleton sighed softly, looking like he wanted to pinch the
bridge of a nose he didn’t have. “Why all the
secrecy and stalking?”

Sans chuckled softly as he flashed an impressed grin at his
brother, "Hey. That's pretty clever. I'm
gonna have to remember that one." Delighted to hear
Papyrus laugh harder, Sans played along by flexing his arms
dramatically into different poses, "You can
never be too sure bro. They say shorter monsters have it easier
to buff out."
Then, just as Undyne appeared, Sans groaned after he had fallen
backwards with Papyrus and hit the back of his skull against the
younger one's ribcage with an audible 'thwhack' before the
rattle of bones clattering the ground followed soon after.
"You okay bro?"

her hips and beamed her signature toothy grin, "Well yeah, of

had a day off myself actually, so I figured I could use that
time to come find you and get some training in." she proclaimed
and took a few jabs in the air for emphasis.
She then paused to think about the absurdity of the situation
and disagreed with the brothers, "Well no for one it isn't
creepy and no, there's no secrecy or stalking; on the count of I
kinda live around here and it's common for me to go swimming to
get my morning started." she pointed out, "As for calling you,

take no for an answer!"

Papyrus teaching a pun to his brother? What parallel universe
were they from? Still, it was clear from the expression on the
younger’s face that he was pleased in impressing his sibling,
their lackadaisical quality time today drawing the sentry’s mind
back to much younger days with fewer responsibilities and even
further innocence. “Nyeh heh, glad you liked it,
brother!”
The audible sound of Sans’ bones creaking as he made a big show
of flexing made the lankier skeleton’s eyes widen, the lights
therein brightening further with his rippling peals of
amusement. “S-Sans!” he gasped, holding his
hand out with tears gathering at the corners of his eyes,
seeking a modicum of mercy on this humorous onslaught.
“M-maybe you should ask Aaron?” he
suggested breathlessly, ribcage aching a little as he wheezed a
few more “heh”s out. Honestly, the idea of his brother doing any
kind of real workout was absurd. But that didn’t mean Papyrus
couldn’t encourage the notion, even if suggested in humor.
The guard trainee was sure he was going to have a bruised
sternum after his sibling’s skull clanked with it, having only
the slightly thick turtleneck covering it. Still, he offered a
reassuring grin to Sans despite the mild ache there and also in
his pelvis, hugging Sans to him in a gentle gesture of
affection. “Just bruised my pride,” he
remarked dryly, his voice kept low in an attempt to only be
audible to the elder skeleton.
“Training?” There was an expression that
was definitely bewildered crossing Papyrus’ bony features as
this word sounded almost foreign for a few soul-beats. The
meaning of this word did sink through his skull after a few
moments, a sudden glance given to Sans with the realization it
would mean cutting their day short. “I’m hardly
dressed for that, Undyne,” he offered in weak protest,
his eyes gleaming apologies to his brother as he found himself
torn between those two loyalties. Certainly he wasn’t in his
usual battle body, but the nimble skeleton would make up for it
by dodging as he often did.
Papyrus lifted his left hand from where it curled around Sans’
waist still, the other staying in what was decidedly a
protective gesture as he opened his mouth to protest the head of
the Royal Guard’s logic, only to have the notion die in his
throat as teeth clacked shut with the softest of sighs when
Undyne declared she wouldn’t take no for an answer. He knew the
truth of that statement in his bones, even if in this moment his
heart was divided in its desire. “Sorry, Sans.
Snowcheck for later?” he asked, finally letting the
stockier skeleton out of his grasp so he could stand up and go
pick up his fishing rod to leave a little less work for the
