Absent Without Leaf (Papyrus and Sans)
By: guest96 Date: August 28, 2017, 5:31 am
---------------------------------------------------------
[sub]In Character Date & Time: 11th November UUY 1,
approximately 9-10 PM[/sub]
The sudden change of the television's audio as it switched
programs jolted Papyrus awake from his impromptu nap on the
chartreuse sofa, the skeleton rattling briefly in startlement as
he hoisted himself upright in the chair again, having slid into
a semi-reclined position whilst dozing off.
"Nyeh," he snorted, shaking his head
lightly to clear it and also in droll amusement.
"Sans' laziness is rubbing off on me." In
truth, he had worked himself extra hard today in his patrols
after everything that had happened, still feeling a sense of
responsibility to ensuring the peace that had once again settled
over Snowdin stayed, the frenetic effort catching up even to the
energetic skeleton.
Thoughts turned toward his sibling now, Papyrus glanced about
the house from where he sat, but found no evidence of the other
skeleton. "SANS!" he shouted, voice echoing
off the walls to serve as his only reply.
"Tch. I bet that lazybones is just off napping
somewhere." Noting the time from the ticker moving along
the bottom of the television screen, a frown creased his
features downward in mild concern, prompting the sentry to push
himself out of the inviting couch and to his full height. Boots
made muffled clops against the carpet as he sauntered over to
the television to turn it off, a swift about-face marching him
to the front door where he grabbed his scarf off the coat rack,
swirling it about his neck in grandiose fashion. It did nothing
to protect him from the sometimes bitter cold in Snowdin, but
the flowing fabric looked positively majestic as he marched
outside into the softly falling snow.
Papyrus looked up as he pulled the door shut behind him, only to
have snow fall into his eye sockets. It felt weird and he made a
sound of disgruntlement, shaking his head even as he took the
care to lock the door properly. After all, how could the Great
Papyrus be expected to keep Snowdin secure if he couldn't even
keep his own home so?
Satisfied with the state of affairs, he tucked the skeleton key
away and began tromping toward Grillby's. It wasn't a place
Papyrus relished going, but the skeleton knew it was also the
most likely spot he would find his brother at given the late
hour. Powdery snow crunched beneath his boots as he walked, head
held high with a greeting nod and smile for all he passed en
route to the bar. There weren't too many out at such an hour,
but a monster so great as he must always be ready and willing to
face any challenge, no matter if it be large or small, and serve
as inspiration to all.
The strong odors of Grillby's gastronomical gathering place
would have been enough to make the monster wrinkle his nose if
he had one, a faint greenish cast tinging his cheekbones as he
pushed the door open with the tinkle of a tiny bell announcing
his arrival. Keen eyes swept the room with rapid efficiency to
find no sign of his sibling's presence, much to his annoyance.
If Sans wasn't here then he could be quite literally anywhere in
Snowdin -- or even the Underground -- which presented Papyrus
with a great deal more work. Nodding politely to those dining,
the monster made his egress from the building swiftly, eagerly
taking in the fresher air once he got far enough away from the
establishment. "Where in the depths is he?"
he grumbled to himself, pulling out his cell phone and
long-pressing the button to call his AWOL family member. The
remote telebone rang a predictable number of times before the
voicemail kicked in, Sans' pre-recorded voice hailing the
simultaneously irked and concerned sibling with its message:
Heya. Seems that you've reached my phone
sans me. S'okay, though. Just leaf your message after the beep
and I'll get back to ya!
The "beep" was more of a blat as the sound of a whoopie cushion
grated against Papyrus' ear-holes, but not to be deterred by
such obstacles the skeleton left his brother a message, growling
with his own brand of fierceness and affection.
"If there is anything that is sans you, dear
brother, it is I! I expect a full report on your absence and for
you to call me as soon as you get this message! It is very late
and you may owe me two stories once you are home!" The
idea that a human might have come through the Ruins and squared
off with Sans was enough to send a shiver rattling through
Papyrus' bones, sending a scattering of snow flurrying down
about him from his shoulders, but he did not mention this
lurking fear in his message, simply hanging up to stalk off and
away from the small town into the forest proper, leaving a wake
of footsteps soon filled in by the steadily falling
precipitation from the thick clouds above.
He would find his brother, Papyrus told himself, and when he did
there would be no stopping the fury of his mighty hug!

---------------------------------------------------------
(Set after the Reunion thread for timeline's consistency's
sake~)
-----
Snow drifted in the delicate breeze over Snowdin's forest,
allowing for the snowflakes to spin and dance and for the wind
to sing whispers in between the dead branches of the towering
trees. Wood rattled and creaked in quiet harmony with the breeze
as a certain short skeleton shuffled through the knee-high snow.
Judging from the light humming which echoed from his
never-ending grin, Sans was in quite high spirits for someone
wandering through such a bleak forest. He could not only feel
some of the snow partially melt at his wake, but his socks and
fluffy slippers also absorbed the water. Now, there was a loud,
irritable 'squelch' every time he took a step. This didn't seem
to bother Sans; though his leisurely shuffles did come to a halt
when he had a nagging feeling to check his mobile phone.
The Sentry reached deeper into one of his pockets and fished out
his phone and hummed to himself with surprise. Not only did he
have a missed call from his brother, but he also didn't realise
that he had left the thing on silent.
"Oops." he mumbled, already feeling
guilty at the sight of Papyrus' name before deciding to raise
the phone and listen to the voicemail.
Shortly afterwards he was now left with a decision which had put
him in a bit of a dilemma. The skeleton's grin seemed to grow
mildly false as he frowned lightly in thought. What required the
least possible amount of energy for him to expel in response to
his brother? Should he call him back, walk back home or take a
Shortcut? He could easily call him back and that was hardly a
challenge the more he thought about it, but he still needed to
get home.
Looking up he could easily see Snowdin and with a sigh he
continued to shuffle along and dialed Papyrus' number as he
went. He waited for a moment before speaking, [font=comic sans
ms]['Sup bro? Sorry I missed your call. I, uh, forgot I left
it on silent, heh. Good thing it doesn't have glasses though,
that way I don't have to worry about it missing 'contacts'
either.] he then held the phone away briefly as a loud,
unattractive snort of laughter escaped him. After he recovered
he then continued, [I was in Snowdin Forest.
There's this huuuuuge door. It's really cool. Perfect for
practicing my knock-knock jokes when I was done watching for
humans. Yanno. Same old, same old. Had a good time though.
Aaaanyways, I'm heading home now and you get to pick both of the
stories this time. Sorry if I worried ya-]
Sans then stopped speaking abruptly when he noticed an
unmistakably familiar silhouette approach him. His grin was once
again genuine as he looked up and pocketed his phone,
"Wow. That was quick. Did you plant a
tracking device on me or somethin'?"

---------------------------------------------------------
The trees seemed to speak to each other as their bare branches
rustled in the varying breeze wending its way through them, the
air cold and dry but passing unnoticed over Papyrus' cheekbones
to ripple through his lengthy scarf as he performed his
meticulous sweep of the sleeping forest. Aside from his
crunching footsteps, the wind, and occasional rustle of fauna
among the woods, the area was almost deathly quiet, leaving the
skeleton with nothing to occupy his senses but his whirling
thoughts which were very filled with concern for his sibling
indeed. The soft glow in his eyes tinged an anxious shade of
yellow as the worries followed his wake like a living shadow,
gnawing at his bones as his normally exuberant pace became more
plodding.
A familiar ringtone derailed the morose thought train that the
younger skeleton had boarded, Papyrus fishing out his phone
quickly to answer it within the first two rings. Sans' face on
the caller ID sent a wash of relief through him even as he
lifted the device to his ear-hole. Jaw opened to offer an
enthusiastic greeting but the elder skeleton started rattling
off his own spiel first, a litany of familiar sounding excuses.
The warm amber hue that had suffused his eye sockets upon
hearing the reassuring voice soon turned an irked shade of red
as his expression scrunched up into one of annoyance at the
lighthearted puns, though he found himself still grinning at the
idiotic humor.
In the deathly silent copse of trees, the sound of Sans'
snorting laughter carried both electronically through the mobile
phone but also from nearby in the woods, prompting Papyrus to
move with purpose now in that direction. The rest of the
drawling dialogue was only half heard as he honed in on his
sibling, the voice growing more audible outside that small
electronic as the taller skeleton approached. The telebone was
slipped back into place as he drew close enough for the words to
be intelligible outside the device, the sentry's eyes once again
more a warm amber than annoyed rouge as they scanned the shorter
monster to find him unharmed, much to his relief.
A snort of lighthearted derision escaped Papyrus at that playful
assertion of a tracking device, his steps speeding up as he
emerged from the trees into the cleared path to carry him the
rest of the way over to his brother, scooping up the elder in a
tight hug that left the shorter skeleton briefly dangling above
the ground. "You just make enough noise to wake
the undead, dear brother!" he assured Sans with playful
tones, giving another squeeze before setting him back down
gently. "And you did worry me! What would I do if
something decided to gnaw on your bones, huh?" The
younger curled an arm around the other's shoulders, giving the
rounder skull a brotherly noogie. "Good thing you
have the Great Papyrus looking after you! Nyeh heh heh!"
Smiling down at Sans, Papyrus untangled himself from his sibling
before taking a half step toward Snowdin's dim glow in the
distance. "Well, better get going! After all, you
owe me two stories tonight for all this extra work and
worry!"

---------------------------------------------------------
Sans grunted softly as he was hoisted up into a brotherly hug
but he welcomed it whole-heartly. He returned the embrace with
his own and ending it with a couple of pats on the back,
"Oh that's a relief. That just means I have
nothing to worry about if I knock them dead with more of my
hilarious jokes." he hummed.
The shorter skeleton made no effort in trying to be released
from his brother's hold, it was quite welcoming since the two
had been separated for a little while. So, Sans just kinda hung
there like a lazy cat as he was held up from the ground. He did
however, squirm a little before giving up on trying to escape
again when he was noogied, "Heeeeey. Heeeey.
Dude. I just polished that... wait... when did I last do that
again?" he protested with a few chuckles before his voice
eased into one of curious seriousness about himself questioning
the schedule of his own hygiene. After a few seconds he just
shrugged the thought away, no longer believing for that to be
important.
"I dunno. Make whoever it was some spaghetti
so that they would gnaw on that instead of me?" Sans
assumed humorously as he answered his brother's supposedly
rhetorical question. The lights in his eye sockets drifted to
the side, his genuine grin slipping for a moment and his voice
dropped to a lower octave briefly, "Heh,
yeah I'm super lucky. Don't think I'd last very long without you
bro."
However his voice was quick to pipe up as he continued,
"Cool. What'll it be tonight? Oh yeah,
before I forget. I've heard that Zarc's band might be having
another gig soon. We should probably go, yanno. I might take
Tori with us too if that's cool with you?"

"Well, maybe if you didn't spend so much of your
time napping you'd have more time for other things, brother,
like polishing your bones," the taller skeleton suggested
in a gentle ribbing.
"Brilliant Sans! No hungry monster or man could
hope to resist my delicious pasta." Papyrus glanced down
at Sans in time to see the sudden darkness that seemed to dim
the other's eyes, however briefly, a touch of yellow tinging the
amber glow floating in his eye sockets at the more morose
agreement. "Well," he asserted, hand
reaching down to squeeze the elder's shoulder reassuringly,
"you are related to the Great Papyrus, so surely
that must count for something, nyes?"
As the topic moved on to lighter things, he opted to drop
further discussion of such dark rhetoricals in favor of
something much more pleasant. "A gig, huh?"
Hand moved up to stroke his chin thoughtfully for a moment, the
honeyed pupils darting back in forth briefly in thought before
he started walking toward Snowdin once more.
"Well, it would be excellent to support such a
good friend in their passion! Besides," he segued, his
voice turning sly as he glanced down at his sibling,
"he's way better at karaoke than you. Nyeh
heh!" More footsteps crunched in the snow, a more
confident counterpoint to Sans' squelching slippers.
"As for Her Majesty, I see no reason to exclude
her from such a pleasant social gathering! Perhaps I can talk to
her about some cooking lessons at the same time! It would be
quite efficient."
Falling silent for a bit to contemplate the answer to the
remaining question, the lanky monster did eventually come up
with a reply: "Well, it's been ages since you read
The Poky Little Puppy to me, and I think I should like to hear
about Corduroy again." In truth it had really only been a
few weeks since the last time that well loved book had been
tugged off the shelf, but time had a funny way of flowing with
so many days almost seeming to be a repeat of the one before.
"Do you think you can stay awake long enough for
that, brother mine?" Though his tone was lighthearted and
even playful, there was still that faint tinge of yellow belying
his warm exuberance if the shorter skeleton were paying
attention, the broad grin not fully touching those dancing
lights.

By: Sans Date: August 29, 2017, 4:53 am
---------------------------------------------------------
Sans found himself shrugging again, "Can't
argue with that. Still, nothing beats a good nap every once in a
while. Sometimes it's just what the body needs to restore some
energy to get through the day yanno?" he hummed casually
when he closed his eye sockets. Perhaps even sounding a little
rehearsed, like he was just waiting for his brother to mention
that at some point soon. The skeleton then shuffled beside his
brother as they started the journey back home. Sans was feeling
more relaxed now that he was reunited with Papyrus again,
despite having to take an extra step or two compared to the
taller one's long strides.
The elder brother chuckled softly at the remark about his
cooking and quipped again, "Yeah whenever
you're cooking, there's no way anyone could walk 'pasta' without
noticing. Speaking of, not too long ago I ran into a monster who
sells potions and runs a petite cafe in Waterfall. Name's
Cinnamon. I might have noticed she sold some bottles you might
wanna try with your cooking. Though the way I see it, it would
be your cooking which would enhance the potion; not the other
way around. Heh."
There was a brief, yet noticeable pause in the shorter
skeleton's steps when he felt Papyrus' reassuring hand on his
shoulder. He held his permanent smile as always, though he was
more concerned that Papyrus had caught him off-guard. Not that
he thought Papyrus would never noticed, but more so that he was
annoyed at himself for allowing that moment to be seen.
Naturally, he managed to follow through and act like that
thought never happened and continued to speak nonchalantly,
"Oh that definitely counts. If I'm lucky,
maybe some of your greatness would rub off on me some day."

He opened his eye sockets again and the lights held within
seemed to glimmer with delight in hearing Papyrus' response to
his suggestion. Sans always had a lot of friends and knew a lot
of monsters, but nothing quite beats hanging out with those
closest to you all at once and having a good time. At the
mention of the karaoke, Sans raised an index finger as if to
debate only to find words failed him in that lengthy pause as he
processed what had been said.
"You do have a point. Zarc's band is pretty
cool and he has a killer voice. I should know, I've been to
every gig they had. Looking forward to the next one." he
commented with a casual shrug and his hands buried deep into his
pockets... as though he were anticipating something.
"Speaking of bands, did you know that I am
in one too?" he added as he slipped his hand out of a
pocket and raised it up high for his brother to see. His bony
fingers had an elastic band wrapped tightly around them. The
smiling skeleton also did his best to suppress his laughter -
but also failing miserably, "We're quite the
'elastifying loop'. Have our own 'Loopies' stalking us and
everything. Sometimes it kinda puts us in a 'bind'. Anywho, it
might be a bit of a 'stretch' but I'm pretty sure that our next
concert should sell out."
It didn't take long for Sans to lose composure completely and
doubled over; laughing at his own jokes.
After wiping a tear from an eye socket he flicked it out into
the snow, "Ahhh the classics. You never get
tired of hearing those stories, and I never get tired of telling
them." he commented; in truth he had practically
memorized those ones from cover to cover given how many times he
had read them. Which makes it all the more easier for him to be
as entertaining as possible when retelling the tales. He then
looked up to Papyrus with a broad smile, [font=comic sans
ms]"Well of course bro, I at least owe you that much."

“Well, that sounds like a gastronomical idea,
Sans!” Two could play at the game of culinary puns, it
seemed. “You shall have to introduce me to this
spicy lady in dill thyme. Nyeh heh.” The honeyed glow
brightened in Papyrus’ eyes as amusement rippled from him in
meeting his sibling’s puns with his own. “Perhaps
we can whisk her away.”
Jaw hinged partly open as the tall skeleton started to offer
some kind of reassurance to his sibling at the overly saccharine
comeback, but teeth promptly clacked shut as the younger seemed
to find no good means to truly bolster Sans’ spirits with his
own witty repartee. It was a familiar dance between the polar
opposite pair, but Papyrus had little desire to trot out their
usual routine when it seemed decidedly fruitless at this
juncture, instead offering a passing but genuine compliment:
“Well, you are a pretty cool dude already, if I do
say so myself!”
The smile on Papyrus’ skull broadened subtly as his companion
conceded his point about musical prowess, a soft chuckle
bubbling up from him. “Better tell me when it is
so we can gig going to it, then!” His own amusement was
quickly diverted as the elder pulled out his hands, the cascade
of calembour earning a groan even as he found himself laughing
despite his best efforts to remain suitably composed as would
fit a member of the Royal Guard. “Gah!
Saaaaaaaaans!” he bellowed, voice echoing over the
landscape, though it was truly more amused than annoyed at the
artful display of witticism.
Shaking his head as they were forced to halt due to Sans’
cacophony of cackles, the taller monster adopted a pose with his
balled hands on his hips as he waited for the older skeleton to
regain his own composure, amber eyes bespeaking to his genuinely
amused state of being. “Well, at least I know you
can practically recite them to me in your sleep,
lazybones!” he quipped wryly before his gaze went toward
Snowdin again, the town seeming much too far away for the amount
of time they’ve been walking toward it.
“Tch,” he clacked softly, a rattle of mild
impatience rippling through his frame before a thought occurred
to him that seems to solve several dilemmas at once.
“Sans,” he entreated, kneeling down in what
was hopefully a familiar posture to the shorter peer.
“Climb on. We’re going for a jog.”
Once his sibling complied, Papyrus stood up, hands moving to
hold onto Sans’ femurs and keep his brother from slipping,
trusting him to hold on with his arms, even if the majestically
long scarf was flapping in his face. “Let me show
you how to put some backbone into it, brother!” he
declared before bolting forward, long legs eating away at the
ground beneath his feet, boots pounding the fluffy snow into
submission in his passionate wake. The softly falling snow
whipped at their bare cheekbones as he ran, heels kicking up an
impressive cloud of powder behind them in an almost comical gait
were it not for the earnest expression of a skeleton taking his
task quite seriously.
The lights of the town soon surrounded the pair, a technicolor
blur as they whizzed past the familiar scenery and almost beyond
their domicile, Papyrus having to put on the proverbial brakes
in a decidedly comical skid before pacing the few steps over to
the front door as if such a maneuver were completely
intentional. Skeleton key was fished out and the door opened to
allow them ingress, the younger carting the elder inside before
finally setting Sans down on the rug just inside of the door
with his sodden footwear. “Now, take those
waterlogged things off before you take another step inside.
Wouldn’t want to leave cold puddles in the carpet!”

---------------------------------------------------------
For someone who was so lazy, Sans sure could move or react
really quickly when he chose to. Just as Papyrus had proclaimed
the first syllable of 'gastronomical' Sans quipped with
squeezing a whoopee cushion for emphasis; all the while
snickering lightly. He found himself pausing in pleasant
realization that his brother had rolled out a string of jokes of
his own. His grin broadened, the lights seemed to have merrily
danced on the spot within his eye sockets. The brother could
feel himself swelling with pride, "Dude. Did
you just..." he asked slowly in between chuckles but the
more Papyrus continued the more Sans was starting to lose it. He
had to stop walking for a moment to slouch over and rest his
hands on his knees as he laughed, "Pap, I'm
so proud of you hehehehe. I'll have no choice but to take that
as a 'condiment'."
Once again he recovered and stood up straight, closing his eye
sockets and taking in a seemingly unnecessary breath,
"Thanks bro, I learnt from the best."
he replied; returning the compliment in kind. He, however, found
himself opening one of them again to witness his brother's
reaction to his own string of puns.
"Heh."
He couldn't help but casually fist-pump the air before taking a
few steps ahead of his brother with his rarely displayed burst
of speed and pointed an accusing finger at him, [font=comic sans
ms]"Ha. I knew it. I knew you thought my jokes were hilarious.
You can't take it back now."
Before he knew it Papyrus' patience was already starting to wear
thin and if it meant he didn't have to expend any effort into
walking, he wasn't about to decline a free ride. So, Sans
carefully clambered onto the back of his brother, paying careful
mind to not accidentally hurt him or scratch his prized costume.
He then placed his hands on Papyrus' shoulders as he stood back
up, "I dunno bro, 'I don't think I have the
guts' for - woah!" he began before the sudden shift of
momentum threw his body backwards; but luckily he was pretty
secure as the other skeleton took off.
When they arrived home, Sans found himself looking back to where
they had just ran from, "Pap. I'm impressed.
That was a trek." he said before following his demands.
Sans wasn't about to argue and as far as he was concerned,
leaving his slippers and socks outside just meant another place
for him to keep 'forgetting' to pick up another one of his
socks. He then roughly wiped his bare feet on the mat to rid
them of any left over moisture before entering the house again.
His toes drummed against the soft, warm carpet; really taking in
the comfort it provided. The stout skeleton then made his way up
to Papyrus' room, "C'mon bro." he
encouraged before disappearing inside and pulling two books off
of the bookshelf. One with a golden spine with a dog at the
front and the other with a teddy bear and a bright red
background. Sans then sat at the designated seat beside his
brother's bed and waited for him until he was ready.
Once he was, Sans cleared his 'throat' and began to read and of
his own free will, putting effort into the showmanship and
enunciation of his voice to match the tone of the story,
"Five little puppies dug a hole under the
fence and went for a walk in the wide, wide world. Through the
meadow they went, down the road, over the bridge, across the
green grass, and up the hill, one after the other. And when they
got to the top of the hill, they counted themselves: one, two,
three, four. One little puppy wasn't there. "Now where in the
world is that poky little puppy?" they wondered..." he
then continued the story right until the end; frequently
checking to make sure that Papyrus was enjoying himself.

For once, the younger sibling wasn’t riled up by the addition of
incidental instrumentation, as it meant that Sans was in better
spirits, this having been the whole point of Papyrus’ punishing
exercise. Even the rejoined “condiment” netted a soft nyeh-ing
chuckle from monster, just happy to see his sibling really
smiling again.
Sans’ accusation made the taller skele-bro glance from side to
side in a sheepish expression, gloved fingertips tapping
together in front of him as he made a soft throat-clearing sound
despite a decided lack of a trachea.
“Weeellll….” he hemmed, looking for a way
out to continue being cool, though in truth he’s having a good
time with his sibling in their own wacky way. “You
are my brother and it is my duty to support you, so this is
another resounding victory for the Great Papyrus! Nyeh heh
heh!”
If there was any response to his companion’s coy quip as they
bounded across the wintry landscape, it was lost to the wind
whipping around them, rippling through the long scarf that
snapped behind the trotting skeleton. The complement earned a
deeper grin from Papyrus, eyes dancing with a softly smoldering
passion, the run having given him at least a temporary surge of
energy. “See what you can do with a little
motor-vation, Sans?” The playful quip is given freely
since they seem to already be on a roll tonight and it’s clear
to the lankier of the pair that his sibling needed this kind of
gentle ribbing right now.
As his peer shed his footwear, Papyrus did likewise, though his
boots were far cleaner than the soggy slippers Sans was wearing.
The long scarf was also wrapped about the top of the coat rack
as though it were a pile of spaghetti, earning a satisfied nod
from the skeleton before he locked the front door from the
inside and about-faced to strut deeper into their abode. The
kitchen drew a glance, the self-proclaimed chef contemplating a
palate pleasing treat to round out their evening with. He
glanced up at Sans’ beckoning voice, eyes brightening as his
smile did. “Get comfortable, brother! I shall join
you shortly,” he assured his sibling before ducking into
the cooking alcove.
Familiarity guided Papyrus’ steps as he pulled out a small
saucepan from the cabinets, setting it on the stovetop before
pulling out the requisite ingredients -- milk from the fridge,
chocolate from the pantry, spices and sweetening from the
cabinets -- and gathered them all onto the countertop next to
the stove. The chocolate was added first in small chunks, the
heat kept surprisingly low as the skeleton demonstrated actual
acumen for this task, the milk added next and whisked
continuously while he hummed to himself. Once the mixture was
well blended he gave the steaming liquid a little taste test
with his pinky bone dipping into it, soon adding a healthy dash
of cinnamon and a touch more sweetening to make it to his
liking.
The heat was turned off and the skeleton removed the pot from
the burner to prevent scalding the carefully crafted cocoa, a
small tray and two large mugs fished out from their storage
spots to be setup and then the cups filled with with hot brew. A
glance was given to the now dirty saucepan, the monster opting
to give it a good rinsing in the sink before filling it with
scalding water to soak overnight in lieu of a proper washing so
their beverages didn't get cold. He’d nearly picked up the tray
before he recalled a very important addition, a bag of tiny
marshmallows coming out of the pantry to be added generously
atop the two mugs and then he closed the bag, now satisfied with
his confection.
A glance was given to the kitchen with things still in need of
minor cleanup, but for once Papyrus decided it was worth waiting
until the morning to do such duties. After all, Sans was waiting
very patiently for him and he did not wish to ignore the gift of
that time together with his closest family member. Taking the
tray carefully upstairs, the taller brother set it on the table
with all his action figures, a gentle nudge making room for the
small item. Taking off his gloves finally, he wrapped bony
fingers about one of mugs, turning to offer it to his sibling
before taking a trip into his closet to shed the rest of his
battle body very carefully, donning pajamas that were blue with
a variety of bone shapes on them, the soft garments hanging
loosely over his bony frame.
Finally ready for bed, he padded softly out of the walk in
closet to claim his own cup of hot chocolate, carrying it to his
racecar bed to slip under the covers. He leaned back against his
pillows and headboard as he sipped the warming brew, knees
curled up toward his sternum as he listened to his sibling start
in on the tale.
The sound of that familiar voice and well loved story lulled him
easily, the lights in his eyes slowly dimming as a wash of
sleepiness wrapped him like a warm, freshly laundered blanket.
Teeth clacked together occasionally as the yawns became more
frequent, the cocoa finished partway through the first story
before he relinquished the now empty mug to his nightstand and
slid down fully into the bed, laying on his side as he hugged a
pillow, eyes on Sans’ animated storytelling. The rise and fall
of his rib cage in a simulacrum of breathing gradually slowed,
his right hand reaching out to lay over the elder’s nearer leg,
a soft gesture of affection and closeness that carried an almost
childish innocence with it.
It didn’t take long into the second requested story for Papyrus
to doze off completely, the tension running out of his bones
like water through a sieve as the lights in his eyes dimmed
completely, a visage of perfect contentment in the presence of
the person he loved the most.

---------------------------------------------------------
It never usually takes much for Sans to get comfortable, seeing
as he could fall asleep just about anywhere, and a chair beside
Papyrus' bed was no different. The elder skeleton leaned back
casually, reminiscing on events which had recently passed -
particularly the night he had spent with a goat monster. His
toes just barely grazed against the carpet as he drummed his
fingers against the books and it wasn't long before his expected
brother also entered the room. He smiled, as he always did and
accepted the mug of hot chocolate; leisurely taking sips from it
from time to time throughout the rest of the night. Whether if
he actually liked it or not, remained a mystery; regardless, the
skeleton made sure to empty the mug.
As Sans continued to retell the favourite stories, he didn't
stop until he had finished the second one; despite Papyrus
already had fallen asleep half way through it. Was it because he
was worried that his brother may wake before he finished? Or was
it because he said he would tell two and stuck through with it
right until the end? Either way, the night finished with Sans
closing the two books and quietly placing them on the floor
beside him and leaving the mug on the table; next to his
brother's collection of figurines. The Sentry was also sure not
to disturb the table's occupants with its new visitor and simply
left it at the lonely corner.
He then found himself yawning, envious that Papyrus was already
fast asleep. At first he made a motion to get up and leave the
room, but later thought against it and simply drifted off to
sleep where he sat. His soft snoring soon occupied the room, as
if playing a tune to the falling snow outside.
